If a game won’t run on your Steam Deck, first check its Steam Deck Compatibility rating and the specific requirements it does not meet. Then update SteamOS, restart the Deck, and test again. The right next step depends on whether the game never opens, closes after “Preparing to Launch,” runs poorly, or shows a platform-availability error—there is no single fix for every game.
First, identify what happens when you launch the game
Note the game’s name and exact error message, then identify which description fits:

- It never opens: Check its Deck compatibility rating and try the software checks below.
- It shows “Preparing to Launch,” then closes: Verify the game files, check for interfering software, and compare the game’s requirements with the Deck.
- It opens but is unstable or performs poorly: Check compatibility and whether a third-party Desktop Mode application could be affecting the system.
- Steam says “Game is not available on your current platform”: Check the game’s supported operating systems; this is a platform-support issue, not just a launch crash.
Steam notes that launch failures can have different causes across games and configurations. Use the steps that match the symptom rather than assuming one setting will fix every case. Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide

Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating
Open the game’s Steam Store page and find its Steam Deck Compatibility section. Steam uses four ratings:
#1 Best Overall
- International (UK) Version
- 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)
- SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
- 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
- 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
- Verified: The game works well on Steam Deck by default.
- Playable: The game works, but may require manual configuration or adjustments.
- Unsupported: Steam does not currently consider the game playable on Deck.
- Unknown: Steam has not tested the game. This is not evidence that it will work or fail.
For a Playable or Unsupported rating, read the listed compatibility details to see which requirements are not met. The label is a useful clue, not a guarantee that every game update or configuration will behave the same way. Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide
Install updates, restart, and test without third-party apps
Steam’s initial checks for Steam Deck software instability are to install available system updates, restart, and exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode. Change one thing at a time and try the game again so you can tell whether anything made a difference. Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide

- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available updates.
- Restart the Deck from the Power menu, then try the game.
- If you installed third-party applications through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them and test again.
Try a different Proton version for a Steam game
Proton lets Steam run many Windows games on SteamOS. If a Steam game will not launch, you can test a compatibility tool for that title. This is a troubleshooting option, not a promise that Proton will make every unsupported game work.

- In the Library, highlight the game and open Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version available, then launch the game again.
Record the game’s original compatibility setting before changing it, and test only one change at a time. Steam warns that if only the Linux version of a game is installed, forcing Proton may cause Steam to download the Windows version. Steam’s guide to Deck software and Proton troubleshooting

If the game closes after “Preparing to Launch”
When a game begins launching and then closes, Steam recommends checking the installed files, possible software conflicts, and the game’s system requirements. A device at or near a game’s requirements may encounter problems. Steam’s “Games do not run after ‘Preparing to Launch’” guide
- Verify the game files: Use Steam’s file-integrity check for the title, then try launching it again.
- Disable non-essential software: Close applications that could interfere with Steam and test again.
- Check the requirements: Compare the game’s stated system requirements with the Deck and its supported operating systems.
Understand a platform-availability error
If Steam displays “Game is not available on your current platform,” Steam defines this as the game not supporting the operating system currently in use. Check the game’s system requirements and supported operating systems; changing Proton settings is not a substitute for support the game does not provide. Steam’s platform-availability explanation

If the game still will not run, gather details that help distinguish a compatibility issue from a title-specific or system problem:

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Game title and exact error message, if any
- Steam Deck Compatibility rating and any unmet criteria shown on the Store page
- SteamOS and Proton versions
- Whether the game is using a Linux build or running under Proton, if known
- Which steps you tried and what changed after each one
