What Nintendo Switch amiibo figures do
Amiibo figures are Nintendo accessories that interact with select games through NFC. Depending on the title and figure, a scan may grant an in-game item or power-up, unlock a cosmetic, or change part of a game environment. Nintendo says compatibility and functionality vary between games; a figure’s series does not guarantee the same reward in every title. Some games may require an update, and some make the amiibo feature available only after you reach a particular point in the game.
For example, Nintendo documents course power-ups and certain Bellabel Park decoration changes from compatible Mario-series amiibo in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, compatible Zelda-series figures can provide materials, weapons, or themed paraglider fabric. Those are title-specific examples, not universal promises. Which amiibo figures are best for your Switch game?
There is no single best amiibo for every Switch owner. Choose by the exact title you play and the particular feature you want, then confirm that Nintendo lists the figure or series as compatible with that title.

These examples do not establish that every figure in a series works in every game or gives the same result. Nintendo’s About amiibo page says functionality can vary between games. If you want a figure mainly for display, treat its gameplay compatibility as a separate question from its collectible appeal. Retail price and availability are not stated here; check the current listing before purchasing.
How to scan an amiibo on Nintendo Switch
- Check the game. Confirm that the title supports amiibo and review its instructions for which figures work, what they do, and whether you must update the game or progress to a certain point first.
- Open the game and follow its prompt. Amiibo features are activated from within compatible games; the exact menu or moment to scan depends on the title.
- Tap the figure to the NFC touchpoint. On a standard Switch or Switch OLED, use the right Joy-Con control stick or the NFC area above the Nintendo Switch logo on a Pro Controller. On Switch Lite, use the right control stick.
Nintendo’s scanning instructions describe the controller touchpoints and note that figures and cards work with select titles only. Amiibo figures do not need batteries. Nintendo also says an amiibo can store game data for one read/write game at a time; using it with another read/write game may require erasing the saved game data first. Check the prompts carefully before confirming an erase.

Should you buy an amiibo figure or card?
Nintendo supports both figures and cards in select games, but support depends on the game and its available features. If you want the physical figure for display as well as gameplay, a figure fits that purpose; if gameplay is the priority, verify that the exact game supports the specific amiibo format and reward you want. Nintendo’s amiibo FAQ explains that features differ by title and that compatible games provide instructions for their available functions.

How to avoid choosing the wrong figure
- Start with the Switch game you own, not a character or series name.
- Look up the game’s official amiibo instructions and confirm the figure or supported series.
- Identify the actual reward or feature, and check whether the game requires an update or story progression to use it.
- Review any scan limits that matter to you; for example, some Zelda games limit daily scans.
