For long TV or tabletop sessions on the original Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is the strongest all-round choice. For handheld play, replacement Joy-Con or the larger Hori Split Pad Pro may fit better; for extra features or a lower-cost wired option, consider third-party pads such as the PowerA Fusion Pro Wireless or PDP Faceoff Deluxe+ Wired. The right pick depends on where you play, whether you need split-player controls, and which features matter to you.
Best Nintendo Switch controllers at a glance

| PowerA Fusion Pro Wireless Controller | Custom controls and adjustable sticks | Wireless third-party pad | No NFC/Amiibo support, according to Stuff’s 2026 guide |

Which controller is best for your play style?
Best for TV and tabletop: Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Nintendo recommends its separately sold Pro Controller for extended TV and tabletop gaming. Stuff’s 2026 guide names it best overall and describes a conventional layout, precise sticks, HD Rumble, motion sensors, and NFC/Amiibo support. Stuff lists battery life as “up to 40 hours”; that is a published product specification, not an independent test here. Check game compatibility before relying on a particular feature.
Choose it if you want a traditional wireless pad for a docked setup or a tabletop session. Its shape and layout are closer to a conventional gamepad than Joy-Con, but it is not the solution for controls that attach to the console in handheld mode.
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
Best for handheld flexibility and split play: Joy-Con
Joy-Con attach to the Switch for handheld use and can also be used separately, making a pair useful for some local multiplayer games. Pocket Tactics describes motion controls and HD Rumble among their features. They are also the natural option when replacing a missing or damaged Joy-Con. Their small size is useful for the console’s handheld form, but players seeking larger grips may prefer a different setup.
Best for larger handheld controls: Hori Split Pad Pro
The Hori Split Pad Pro fits into the original Switch’s rails and offers larger controls, grips, and sticks for handheld play. It is not a wireless controller that can be detached and used independently: GamesRadar notes that it has no battery for standalone wireless use and cannot split into two gamepads. Pick it for a more substantial handheld feel, not as an extra couch-multiplayer pair.

- C Button for GameChat**
Best feature-led third-party option: PowerA Fusion Pro Wireless
Stuff’s 2026 guide highlights interchangeable thumbsticks and four attachable rear paddles on the PowerA Fusion Pro Wireless. Those custom controls may appeal if you want more ways to reach inputs without changing your grip. The guide says it does not support NFC/Amiibo, so it is not a feature-for-feature substitute for the official controller if Amiibo use matters to you.
Best wired budget pick: PDP Faceoff Deluxe+ Wired
Stuff describes the PDP Faceoff Deluxe+ as a budget-oriented family option with programmable rear buttons and audio controls. Its wired connection means you do not need to recharge it, but you must be comfortable playing with a cable attached. Check the exact version and current listing before buying.

Alternative to compare: 8BitDo Ultimate
TechRadar compares the 8BitDo Ultimate favorably with Nintendo’s Pro Controller, while still noting advantages for the official pad in battery life and NFC. “8BitDo Ultimate” can refer to different products, so verify the exact model, connection type, and compatibility with the original Switch family rather than assuming every product with that name works the same way.
How to choose: connection, comfort, and features
- Where you play: For TV or tabletop use, start with a traditional wireless pad such as the Pro Controller. For controls physically attached in handheld mode, compare Joy-Con with the Hori Split Pad Pro.
- Whether you need a controller pair: Joy-Con can be separated for supported local multiplayer. The Split Pad Pro cannot be divided into two gamepads.
- Grip and control size: Joy-Con prioritize a compact handheld form; the Pro Controller and Split Pad Pro offer more conventional or larger controls for their respective play modes.
- Custom inputs: Rear paddles and interchangeable sticks are distinguishing features of the PowerA Fusion Pro Wireless in Stuff’s guide; the PDP Faceoff Deluxe+ Wired is described with programmable rear buttons.
- Official features: If motion controls, HD Rumble, or NFC/Amiibo matter, compare support on the exact controller and in the game. Third-party products do not necessarily include the same features.
- Cost and availability: Check live pricing, regional stock, the exact model number, and the seller’s compatibility description. Deal prices and product listings can change.
Check compatibility before buying or pairing
Nintendo says Pro Controller support depends on the game: “Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers can be used with compatible titles, as indicated on the back of the packaging or on the game’s summary screen.” Check either place for the title you plan to play.

Original Switch versus Switch 2: check the generation
This guide covers the original Nintendo Switch family, including Switch Lite and Switch OLED where relevant. Switch 2 has different physical attachment dimensions and a different controller ecosystem, so an accessory designed to attach to the original Switch—such as the Hori Split Pad Pro—should not be assumed to fit Switch 2. Confirm compatibility for the exact console and SKU on the product listing or manufacturer information before ordering.

Nintendo UK lists the Pro Controller as an accessory and includes a USB charging cable. This is a notice about Nintendo’s UK store, not evidence that other retailers or regions will stop selling the controller at that time.
