For a prerecorded church service streamed as a scheduled YouTube event, use OBS with H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps, and a resolution and bitrate your computer and sustained upload connection can handle. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 or 8 Mbps at 720p30, plus 20% upload headroom. Those are starting points—not a universal preset. A single scheduled service is different from an unattended 24/7 channel, which needs a plan for interruptions and stream duration.
Recommended OBS settings for a recorded church service
Use these as a baseline for a prerecorded program sent to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. Choose a lower output resolution or bitrate if your source, computer, or reliable upload capacity cannot sustain the higher setting. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported; use the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
| OBS setting | Starting point | When to adjust |
|---|---|---|
| Service / protocol | YouTube; RTMPS if supported by your OBS workflow | Use the URL and stream key supplied for the event in Live Control Room. |
| Video encoder | H.264 | YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Choose those only if your OBS version, computer, and intended workflow support them reliably. |
| Rate control | CBR | This is YouTube’s specified rate control for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Output resolution and frame rate | 1080p30 if the recording, encoder, and connection support it; otherwise consider 720p30 | Match the output to the source and test for dropped frames and clear slides or text. OBS notes that 60 fps can require more resources than 30 fps. |
| Video bitrate | For H.264: 14 Mbps at 1080p30, or 8 Mbps at 720p30 | YouTube’s table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended at 1080p30; at 720p30 it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. Leave 20% upload headroom above the selected stream bitrate. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 kbps | YouTube recommends AAC or MP3; listen to the preview and any resulting archive for speech clarity and unwanted audio. |
| Color | Rec. 709 for SDR | Do not enable HDR unless the complete source-to-stream workflow supports it. |
| Local recording | Optional separate recording output in MKV | MKV is safer if recording stops unexpectedly; remux it to MP4 afterward in OBS if needed. A separate high-quality recording can add system load, so test it. |
These H.264 bitrates and upload-headroom guidance come from YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips. They do not establish what a particular church’s internet connection can sustain. The right choice depends on the recording’s detail and motion, audio needs, encoder performance, and stable upload speed. Slides with small text may need more detail than a static pulpit shot; motion-heavy footage can be more demanding. Test the actual program instead of assuming that 1080p is always preferable.
Prepare OBS and YouTube for the event
- Create or schedule the event: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key into OBS. Treat the key like a password: it allows an encoder to send video to your channel.
- Load the service recording: Add the recorded service as an OBS media source or prepare the complete program feed another way. Confirm that its audio is audible in OBS and that unintended microphone or desktop audio is not mixed in. Media-source looping and playlist controls can vary by setup; verify the behavior in your installed OBS rather than relying on an assumed control.
- Check the YouTube preview: Start sending from OBS ahead of the planned start. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then inspect picture and sound before starting the scheduled event. Follow the event’s selected auto-start and auto-stop settings.
- Run a realistic test: Test with movement and audio similar to the service. Watch YouTube’s stream health and listen for clear, correctly leveled speech. Leave enough upload headroom; YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. A wired Ethernet connection may help where practical, but cannot fix every network fault.
- Finish and verify: End the event in YouTube and stop sending from OBS in the order appropriate to the event controls. If you made a local recording, check that it plays. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer continuous session will appear as one complete archive.
For OBS controls and advance-testing advice, see the OBS Studio overview. YouTube’s event options, including DVR, are separate from encoder quality: when enabled, DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. See YouTube’s live settings.

What “continuously” means for your church
One scheduled service
If you mean one prerecorded Sunday service, a scheduled event and a prepared OBS feed may be enough. Plan the start and end, test the feed, and decide whether viewers need DVR or a local backup recording.
A recurring or 24/7 channel
If you mean repeating programming or keeping a channel live around the clock, do not treat one OBS profile as an unattended-uptime solution. The computer and network must keep working, and a dropped connection interrupts the stream. Decide how the program should repeat, how interruptions should be handled, and whether the YouTube archive needs to cover the entire run. YouTube’s under-12-hour archive guidance makes duration important; it does not promise that a longer session becomes one complete archive.

Local recording: protect a separate copy
If you want a backup of the broadcast, OBS Advanced output can configure streaming and recording independently. In the recording settings, MKV is a practical container because an ungraceful stop does not corrupt the whole file. If an MP4 is required afterward, use OBS remuxing. A higher-quality or separate recording configuration consumes additional system resources, so test it alongside streaming before the service.
OBS explains its recommendation in the Standard Recording Output Guide. Its recording encoder presets guide says the lossless preset can use around 7 GB per minute; that makes lossless recording excessive for many routine service archives. A standard high-quality MKV recording is a more practical starting point.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
- YouTube preview does not appear: Check that OBS is sending to the correct event with its current stream URL and key. Confirm the encoder has started and wait for Live Control Room to receive the feed before starting the scheduled event.
- Dropped frames or an unstable stream: Check sustained upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the chosen bitrate. Reduce resolution or bitrate and retest if the connection cannot sustain the current settings. A wired connection may help, but does not rule out other network problems.
- OBS struggles or frames are missed: Reduce output resolution or frame rate, and test again. A separate high-quality local recording adds load; disable it during diagnosis if it is not essential, then test it separately.
- Speech is missing, too quiet, or mixed with other sound: Check that the media source is audible in OBS, that the intended audio device or track is selected, and that no unwanted desktop or microphone audio is included. Check the YouTube preview before the event.
- The video looks soft or slides are hard to read: Confirm that the source recording has sufficient resolution and detail. Check output scaling and bitrate; test the actual slides and motion at the chosen resolution rather than raising settings beyond the connection or computer’s capacity.
- The local file will not finalize after a crash: Recording directly to MP4 is more vulnerable to an ungraceful stop. Prefer MKV for the local recording and remux it to MP4 afterward if needed.
- The archive is incomplete or absent after a long run: Check the stream duration against YouTube’s guidance that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a longer continuous session becoming one complete archive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use OBS with a recording that already has its own audio?
Yes. Add the recording as a media source or prepare it in the program feed, then confirm its audio is audible in OBS and that unwanted microphone or desktop audio is not mixed in.
Does YouTube DVR change OBS bitrate or resolution settings?
No. DVR is a viewer feature that allows pausing, rewinding, and resuming when enabled; it is separate from encoder quality settings.
