But a game’s age—or its “AAA” label—doesn’t guarantee compatibility: compare your computer with the game’s current official PC requirements before buying or downloading. PC Gamer’s guide, updated April 3, 2026, makes the broad observation that most AAA games from the 2010s or earlier will run easily on any new laptop; that is not a guarantee for every budget, older, or integrated-graphics computer.
Why older AAA games are the best starting point
Big-budget games from earlier generations are more plausible low-spec candidates than recent releases, but “older” is only a screening clue. Different games place different demands on the processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage, and operating system. A laptop that runs one older blockbuster may still fall short of another game’s published minimum.

There is no supported universal list of AAA games that will run on every low-end PC. Use each game’s current official listing to assess the exact edition you intend to play, rather than treating a general recommendation or the game’s release era as proof of compatibility.

Check your PC against the official requirements
Compare your system with every item in the game’s minimum requirements. Where a recommended tier is published, use it as a more comfortable target, not as a guarantee of performance. A missing required component can put your PC below the stated compatibility floor; meeting that floor does not establish a particular frame rate or visual quality.

- Operating system: Check the supported Windows versions and whether the store client itself supports your version.
- Processor: Compare the listed CPU model or class with your computer’s processor.
- Memory: Check system RAM, including any operating-system-specific requirement.
- Graphics and VRAM: Compare the graphics capability, graphics API, and video memory. Do not assume an integrated GPU qualifies without matching it to evidence for the game.
- Storage: Make sure the required free space is available.
Example: Tomb Raider Game of the Year Edition
Steam publishes both minimum and recommended Windows requirements for Tomb Raider Game of the Year Edition. The listing is a useful example of how to assess a candidate; its specifications are not a benchmark or a promise of how the game will perform on a particular modern low-end computer.

Steam notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later as of January 1, 2024. That client-support note is separate from the game’s listed operating-system requirements: check both the current store listing and your system before relying on compatibility.

How to choose other low-spec-friendly candidates
Use the same screening process for each older AAA game you are considering. Prefer candidates whose official minimum requirements fit your whole system, and treat a large gap between minimum and recommended specifications as a reason to be cautious if your PC is close to the floor.

- Identify the exact game edition and current PC storefront listing.
- Read the published minimum and recommended requirements, including graphics API and VRAM.
- Compare the CPU, RAM, graphics hardware, available storage, and OS support with your PC’s specifications.
- If any required item is unclear—especially integrated graphics—look for evidence specific to your hardware rather than inferring compatibility from the game’s age.
- Before buying or downloading, recheck the official listing; editions, availability, requirements, and OS support can change.
