Open WebUI is the best all-round Ollama GUI if you want a browser interface, multiple users, or a home server/NAS deployment. For one computer, Ollama’s own desktop app is the simplest starting point. Msty Studio is the most convenient bundled option, while Enchanted is a focused client for Apple devices that connect to an Ollama server.
Every choice depends on a working Ollama runtime and at least one downloaded model, except that Msty Studio’s documentation says it bundles Ollama. The setup below shows how the pieces fit together, how to run Open WebUI in Docker, and which client fits each platform and use case.

Which Ollama GUI should you choose?
An Ollama GUI is a visual client for Ollama’s local model server. Instead of typing every request in a terminal, you get conversation history, model pickers and, depending on the client, browser access, multiple accounts or connections to other model providers. The GUI does not automatically make a model smaller or faster: the model still runs through Ollama and still consumes your computer’s memory and compute resources.

Open WebUI is the strongest general recommendation because it runs in a browser and is designed for a shared server. Repeated software roundups place it first or describe it as the most feature-complete frontend, but those rankings are editorial opinions rather than a primary-source adoption survey. Ollama’s own app, Msty Studio and Enchanted are better fits when one person is using one computer.

| Option | Interface and platforms | Ollama arrangement | Best fit | Docker or server requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open WebUI | Browser; works wherever you can reach the WebUI server | Normally connects to a separate Ollama service; an Ollama-inclusive image is also available | Home server, NAS, several users, or a feature-rich browser UI | Docker is the clearest deployment path; a pip-based route also exists |
| Ollama app | Native desktop app; the announcement described macOS and Windows, while the download page lists macOS, Windows and Linux | Ollama itself supplies the runtime; pull models into that installation | One person who wants the fewest moving parts | No separate GUI server; install Ollama and launch its app |
| Msty Studio | Desktop application | Its documentation says it bundles the latest Local AI service, Ollama; it can also work with other local engines and hosted providers | Desktop users who want a packaged local setup plus provider flexibility | No separate Ollama install is required when using its bundled service |
| Enchanted | Native clients for macOS, iOS and visionOS | Connects to a self-hosted Ollama server and does not run models itself | Apple users who already operate Ollama elsewhere | Requires a reachable Ollama server |
Feature lists and version labels change quickly. Check each project’s current download and documentation pages before installing, especially if you are deploying on Linux or connecting over a network.
How the pieces fit together
Ollama is the service that loads and runs a model. A GUI is a client that sends prompts to Ollama’s HTTP API and displays the responses. That distinction explains most setup problems:
- Runtime: Ollama must be installed and running.
- Model: At least one model must be downloaded into the same Ollama instance the GUI will use.
- Client: The GUI must know the server address, normally
http://localhost:11434for a client on the same computer. - Network path: A container, phone or another computer cannot use a service that is listening only on the host’s loopback interface.
Open WebUI’s normal Docker deployment illustrates the last point. A container has its own network namespace, so localhost inside the container is the container, not the host running Ollama. The container therefore needs a host mapping and an Ollama address that is reachable beyond the host’s loopback interface.
Requirements and model sizing
Install Ollama first
Download the installer from ollama.com for your operating system. Keep the Ollama application or service running before opening a client. If you use a desktop app, launching it normally starts the local service; on a server, start Ollama using the service method appropriate to that operating system.
Pull at least one model
After installation, download a model from a terminal. For example:
ollama pull qwen3
The model name is an example; use a tag that exists in Ollama’s current library and that your hardware can handle. Pulling a model is separate from installing a GUI, and each Ollama installation has its own model store. If you pull a model on the host but later point a container at a different Ollama instance, the model will not appear there.

Use memory guidance as a rough starting point
A secondary setup guide suggests these approximate graphics-memory targets:
| Model size mentioned | Suggested VRAM | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 8B | About 8 GB | Third-party rule of thumb, not an Ollama specification |
| 14B | About 16 GB | Third-party rule of thumb, not an Ollama specification |
| 32B | About 24 GB | Third-party rule of thumb, not an Ollama specification |
These figures are not guarantees. Quantization, context length, operating-system overhead and whether computation uses a GPU or CPU all affect the result. If a model will not load, begin with a smaller tag or a shorter context rather than assuming the GUI is broken.
Verify Ollama before adding a GUI
Testing the API first separates an Ollama problem from a frontend problem. With Ollama running locally, query its tags endpoint:
curl http://localhost:11434/api/tags
A successful response is JSON containing the models known to that Ollama service. If the model you pulled is not listed, check that the command and the API request are targeting the same machine and user installation. A connection refusal means the service is stopped or listening on another address or port; an empty model list means that this Ollama instance has not received a model.
Set up Open WebUI with Ollama in Docker
Docker is the most practical Open WebUI route for a home server or NAS. The command below keeps WebUI data in a named volume, maps the browser port, and tells the container how to reach Ollama on the host.
docker run -d -p 3000:8080 --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway -e OLLAMA_BASE_URL=http://host.docker.internal:11434 -v open-webui:/app/backend/data --name open-webui --restart always ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main

- Install and start Ollama on the host. Pull a model and confirm it appears from
curl http://localhost:11434/api/tags. - Make Ollama reachable from Docker. Ollama’s default localhost-only binding will not accept the container’s connection. Configure the host service to listen on
0.0.0.0(or another interface that includes the Docker path) before starting WebUI. On a shell-based service, an environment setting such asOLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0is commonly used; apply it through your operating system’s service configuration rather than assuming a temporary terminal setting survives a restart. - Run the container. Keep
--add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway,OLLAMA_BASE_URL=http://host.docker.internal:11434and-v open-webui:/app/backend/dataintact. The first two provide the network route; the volume preserves accounts, conversations and configuration when the container is recreated. - Open the interface. Visit
http://localhost:3000on the Docker host, complete the initial account setup, and select the model that the connected Ollama service reports. - Test a short prompt. If the model list is empty or generation fails, return to the API test and the host-binding check before changing WebUI settings.
Choosing the Open WebUI image
The ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main image is intended to connect to an external Ollama or another API provider. Open WebUI also publishes ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:ollama, which bundles Ollama in one container. The bundled image can simplify an all-in-one deployment, while the external-service arrangement keeps Ollama’s model store on the host and lets other clients use the same server. Pick one architecture deliberately; running two Ollama instances can make model lists appear inconsistent.
Alternative installation path
A third-party guide documents installing Open WebUI with pip. Package names and service commands can change, so use the current Open WebUI instructions for the exact command if you choose this route. The same networking rule still applies: a WebUI process must be able to reach the Ollama API, and Ollama must not be restricted to an unreachable loopback address.
Set up the Ollama desktop app
Ollama’s own app is the shortest path for a single user because the GUI and runtime are the same product.

- Install it for your operating system and launch the Ollama application or service.
- Pull a model, for example
ollama pull qwen3. - Open the app and start a conversation with that model.
Ollama’s app announcement described availability for macOS and Windows, while the download page lists macOS, Windows and Linux. Treat that platform list as version-sensitive: if a Linux desktop build is not offered for your distribution, run the Linux service and use a browser client such as Open WebUI instead.
Set up Msty Studio
Msty Studio is aimed at desktop users who want a packaged local experience. Its official product information describes support for local engines including MLX, llama.cpp and Ollama, as well as hosted providers. Its documentation says the latest Ollama-based Local AI service is bundled, so a first-time user can avoid installing a separate Ollama package when using that bundled path.
- Install the current Msty Studio build for your desktop platform.
- During first launch, choose the bundled local service if offered, or select an existing Ollama endpoint if you already run one.
- Download or select a model through the app’s model controls.
- Send a short test prompt, then adjust the model and context settings to match your hardware.
Secondary roundups describe Knowledge Stacks as limited on the free tier, but that detail has not been verified against current official pricing. Treat plan limits as changeable and check Msty’s current terms before relying on a specific feature.

Set up Enchanted on Apple devices
Enchanted is a native client for macOS, iOS and visionOS. It connects to a self-hosted Ollama server; it does not run the model itself. That makes it useful when Ollama is on a Mac, a home server or another reachable computer, but it is not a replacement for installing and operating Ollama.
- Install Enchanted on the Apple device.
- Make sure Ollama is running on the server and that the required model is already pulled there.
- Enter the Ollama server address in Enchanted’s connection settings. Use the server’s LAN address rather than
localhostwhen the app is on a different device. - Confirm that the server firewall permits the connection only from the networks and devices you intend to use.
- Select the model reported by the server and send a test prompt.
If Enchanted works on the server itself but not on an iPhone or iPad, the usual cause is network reachability or a server still bound only to localhost, not a missing model in the app.
Make a shared or remote setup safe and predictable
Changing Ollama from localhost to 0.0.0.0 is necessary for many container and remote-client arrangements, but it also makes the service listen on network interfaces beyond the local machine. Restrict access with your operating system or router firewall, avoid forwarding the Ollama port directly to the public internet, and use Open WebUI’s account controls for browser access. A private home LAN and an internet-facing server have very different risk profiles.
For a shared home server, keep Ollama and Open WebUI on the same machine when possible. This minimizes latency and avoids copying model files between devices. Use the browser address of the WebUI host from each client, while keeping the Ollama API address private to the WebUI container or trusted LAN clients. Back up the open-webui volume before replacing containers so conversations and settings survive an upgrade.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
Open WebUI says it cannot connect to Ollama
- Run
curl http://localhost:11434/api/tagson the Ollama host. If it fails, fix Ollama first. - Check that the container includes
--add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway. - Check that
OLLAMA_BASE_URLpoints tohttp://host.docker.internal:11434, not the container’s own localhost. - Confirm Ollama is listening beyond localhost when Docker is on another network namespace.
- Inspect the container log with
docker logs open-webuifor the actual connection error.
The model list is empty
Query the tags endpoint on the exact Ollama instance used by the GUI. A model pulled on a laptop will not automatically exist in a server’s model store, and a host Ollama will not share models with an Ollama process inside the bundled WebUI image.

Use a smaller model or a lower context length and compare the result. The 8 GB, 16 GB and 24 GB VRAM figures are rough third-party guidance, not hard compatibility thresholds. Also check free system memory and whether another application is consuming the GPU.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
A remote Apple client cannot connect
Replace localhost with the Ollama server’s LAN address, verify both devices are on a routeable network, and check firewall rules. Do not expose the API publicly just to make a client connect.
Settings disappear after a Docker update
Recreate the container with the same -v open-webui:/app/backend/data volume. Without that persistent volume, replacing the container can remove WebUI’s stored data.
Pick the GUI by scenario
| Your situation | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want a browser UI for a NAS or several household users | Open WebUI | Browser access and multi-user operation suit a central server; Docker provides a repeatable deployment |
| You want the simplest single-computer setup | Ollama’s own app | The runtime and desktop interface come from one installation |
| You want a desktop app that bundles Ollama and can use other engines | Msty Studio | Its documentation describes bundled Ollama plus MLX, llama.cpp and hosted-provider connections |
| You use macOS, iOS or visionOS and already host Ollama elsewhere | Enchanted | It is a native Apple client for a self-hosted server |
| You need several different devices to share one model library | Open WebUI connected to one host Ollama | One server avoids duplicated model downloads and gives every browser the same endpoint |
What is known about cost and feature tiers?
The available product information does not establish current prices for Ollama, Open WebUI, Msty Studio or Enchanted, so do not rely on an old roundup for a fee or subscription figure. Msty’s free-tier Knowledge Stacks limitation has been reported by secondary sources but is not confirmed here against current official pricing. Check the vendor’s current plan pages before budgeting for a hosted provider or premium desktop feature.
Regardless of software pricing, local use has a hardware cost: larger models require more memory and can keep a GPU or CPU busy for extended periods. A smaller model that loads reliably is usually more useful than a larger one that repeatedly runs out of memory.
Maintenance checklist
- Check current Ollama, Open WebUI and client versions before upgrading; version details are volatile.
- Keep the WebUI data volume and back it up before recreating Docker containers.
- After an upgrade, run the tags endpoint and a short generation test.
- Document which machine owns the model files and which address each client uses.
- If you change the Ollama bind address, review firewall rules immediately.
- When troubleshooting, test in order: Ollama service, model visibility, network path, then GUI settings.
For most readers, that sequence leads to a clear choice: install Ollama and pull a model first, use Open WebUI for a browser-based shared server, and choose the Ollama app, Msty Studio or Enchanted when a focused desktop or Apple client better matches the way you work.
