Core Keeper Base Setup: Layout Tips for Your First Base

A compact Core Keeper starter base should center on a clear walkway, nearby storage and grouped crafting and processing stations, with an open edge reserved for progression.

The most useful first base in Core Keeper is compact, readable and deliberately unfinished. Build around the Core or a convenient early waypoint, keep a clear walkway through the middle, place storage beside the stations that consume it, and reserve an open edge for farms, livestock, merchants, automation and new crafting benches. This arrangement lets you start working immediately without trapping yourself in a decorative layout that must be demolished after every progression upgrade.

What your first base actually needs

Your opening base has two jobs: shorten the distance between gathering and crafting, and give you a safe, understandable place to expand. It does not need a grand building, a perfect symmetry or a separate room for every station on day one.

Start with five practical areas:

  • A central approach: a clear path from the entrance or waypoint to your most-used storage and workbench.
  • A crafting cluster: the Basic Workbench, followed by the Copper Workbench and later benches or anvils as they become available.
  • A processing cluster: the Furnace, Cooking Pot, kiln or other smelting equipment, positioned near the inputs those stations use.
  • A storage wall or room: broad, obvious categories rather than dozens of tiny rooms.
  • An expansion edge: empty floor reserved for farms, livestock, merchant rooms, automation and specialized stations.

Think of the plan as a small grid with one unobstructed route, not as a finished house. The station catalog grows from basic benches into multiple workbench tiers, anvils, cooking and smelting equipment, automation tables, livestock workbenches and seasonal or specialty stations. Leaving space now prevents that growth from blocking your entrance later.

Choose the location before placing furniture

Build near the Core or a useful early waypoint

The Core is a natural reference point because it is easy to find again and provides a clear center for navigation. If a nearby early waypoint is more convenient for your routes, use it instead. The important property is repeatable access: you should be able to return from mining, open your storage and reach the needed station without crossing a maze.

Do not claim every nearby tile immediately. Mark the footprint of the base, then leave a rectangular strip or open room on one side. That reserved space is more valuable than early decoration because it can absorb new chests, machines and rooms without forcing a complete rebuild.

Keep the main route legible

Make the entrance, central walkway and storage access visually obvious. Put high-use access points where they can be reached without walking around furniture. A clear route also makes later rearrangement easier: you can move an entire station cluster to one side while the central path remains usable.

Separate dirty and busy work from quiet storage

Mining returns, smelting and cooking create the most frequent traffic. Put those functions close to the entrance or on one side of the base. Keep general storage on a wall or in a room beside the path, rather than scattering chests between decorative objects. Later, a merchant room, livestock area or automation room can occupy the expansion edge without interrupting the original route.

Build order for the first working base

Use the following order so each construction unlocks the next useful capability.

  1. Place the Basic Workbench. This is the first crafting gateway. It supports early tools, furniture and the stations needed to develop the base.
  2. Craft a Furnace. Collect copper ore, process it into Copper Bars and use those bars for the first metal tools and future upgrades.
  3. Place a Cooking Pot. Keep it close to food ingredients and crop storage so cooking does not compete with your main crafting traffic.
  4. Make a Wood Chest. Put the first chest beside the workbench, then add a second chest for general overflow rather than filling the walkway with loose items.
  5. Craft floors, doors and fences only where they improve movement. The Basic Workbench can make these early building pieces, but they should support the route instead of consuming the expansion area.
  6. Build the Copper Workbench when copper is available. It is the next step in the documented loop: craft a workbench, make stronger tools, mine stronger resources and use those resources to reach the next workbench tier.
  7. Move from one cluster to several. Once you have multiple stations, group crafting, processing and storage rather than adding benches wherever an empty tile happens to be.

This sequence gives you a functioning base before you spend time on walls or decoration. The Basic Workbench’s early recipe list includes the Furnace, Cooking Pot, Wood Chest, doors, fences, floors and Copper Workbench, so it naturally defines the first phase of construction.

A starter floor plan that leaves room to grow

The following arrangement works on a small footprint and can be mirrored or stretched as your available building area changes.

Zone Place here first Keep nearby Reserve for later
Center or entry Clear walkway and the most-used chest access General supplies and travel route Do not fill this with low-use furniture
Crafting side Basic Workbench Copper Workbench, later workbenches and anvils Additional benches as the ladder advances
Processing side Furnace and Cooking Pot Ore, Copper Bars, crops and food ingredients Kilns and other smelters or processing machines
Storage wall or room Wood Chests with broad categories Materials consumed by adjacent stations Overflow and specialty storage
Expansion edge Open floor Access path from the main base Farms, livestock, merchant rooms, automation and specialty stations

The table is a zoning guide, not a required blueprint. If a natural obstacle changes the shape, preserve the relationships: storage should be close to work, the route should remain clear and the expansion edge should stay empty until you know what it will contain.

Storage layout: categories that remain useful

Start with broad categories

Early storage is easier to maintain when each chest has a job that will remain valid as you progress. A practical first set is:

  • Ores and bars: raw ore, Copper Bars and later metal products.
  • Blocks and building materials: floors, walls, fences and other construction supplies.
  • Crops and food: harvested plants, ingredients and prepared food.
  • Tools and armor: spare equipment and items awaiting repair or replacement.
  • Valuables: uncommon finds and materials you do not want mixed into routine construction stock.

These labels are intentionally broad. A chest that begins as “ores and bars” can absorb new metal tiers without requiring an immediate redesign. Split a category only when it becomes difficult to find an item, not because every chest must be perfectly sorted from the start.

Put input chests beside the consuming station

Crafting stations can draw materials from the player’s inventory or from nearby chests. Place frequently consumed inputs immediately beside, or in the same compact cluster as, the station that uses them. Ore and bars belong beside furnaces and anvils; crops and ingredients belong beside cooking equipment; common building materials belong beside the workbench used for construction.

Players often describe compact layouts in which several stations share central storage. That is a useful design pattern, but exact tile-distance claims are community advice and may change with the game version. Do not treat a particular number of tiles as a guaranteed specification. If a station fails to find an item, move the relevant chest closer, place the material in your inventory and test again.

Leave access to every chest

A dense wall saves walking only when each chest can actually be opened. Keep a standing tile in front of storage and avoid hiding a high-use chest behind a bench, fence or decorative object. Put overflow storage at the back or on the expansion edge, where it will not interrupt the daily route.

Crafting, smelting and cooking clusters

Crafting side

Place the Basic Workbench where it is easy to reach from both the storage wall and the central walkway. Add the Copper Workbench and later workbench tiers along the same side, leaving enough contiguous floor to extend the row. Anvils can join this cluster when unlocked, especially if your metal storage is nearby.

A row is not mandatory. A compact L-shape works just as well if it keeps station fronts accessible. The design goal is a recognizable “crafting side” so you do not have to search the base each time a new recipe becomes available.

Processing side

Keep the Furnace, Cooking Pot, kiln and other smelters together. This is where raw ore, bars, crops and food ingredients are consumed, so place their chests at the boundary between processing and storage. The arrangement lets you carry one category of material from the storage wall to several stations without crossing the whole base.

As you add machines, preserve a small service gap or open approach in front of them. Filling every adjacent tile may look efficient, but it makes a later move expensive and can block access to a shared input chest.

Why clustering beats a single mixed room

A single room containing every station is acceptable at the very beginning, but it becomes hard to scan as the catalog expands. Separate high-traffic zones by function: general storage, main crafting, smelting and cooking, farming, then later merchant, livestock and automation areas. You gain a mental map as well as shorter trips to the materials that matter.

Plan for the workbench ladder

The documented workbench progression runs through these tiers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Tier How to use it in your layout
Basic Place at the center of the initial crafting cluster; it starts the tool and station progression.
Copper Leave room beside the Basic Workbench for the first upgrade when copper is processed.
Tin Extend the same crafting run rather than moving the original benches.
Iron Keep adjacent storage access as metal and tool requirements broaden.
Scarlet Use the reserved bench space or a planned second crafting bay.
Octarine Preserve an open approach; a larger catalog makes cramped corners harder to manage.
Galaxite Continue the established crafting zone or add a clearly marked extension.
Solarite Treat the original compact layout as the anchor for a mature, multi-room base.

The ladder names do not mean you need every tier in one room on the first day. They show why an expandable side is safer than a finished decorative chamber: each additional tier competes for floor space with other stations, chests and access paths.

Use the expansion edge deliberately

Farming

Reserve a contiguous patch for crops instead of scattering small plots through the base. Keeping agriculture on the edge prevents soil and harvest traffic from cutting across crafting access. Put crop and food storage on the processing side of the farm so ingredients have a short route to the Cooking Pot.

Livestock

A livestock area deserves its own boundary once you have the relevant workbench and space. Place it beyond the main walkway, with a direct path back to food storage or processing. This keeps animal-related movement from occupying the same tiles as your workbench row.

Merchants and specialist rooms

Merchant rooms and other NPC spaces can occupy the reserved expansion edge. Build them as additions to the original base rather than inserting them between storage and the entrance. That preserves the route you already know.

Automation and specialty stations

Automation tables and seasonal or specialty stations are easier to manage in a dedicated room or bay. Their presence is intermittent or specialized, so they should not displace the chests and benches used every trip. Leave a connection to the central path, but keep the room out of the busiest corridor.

When to rebuild—and how to avoid losing time

Rebuilding is normal. Community players commonly report changing starter layouts as new stations and storage needs appear; that is practical experience, not a hard game rule. The safest approach is to rebuild in small moves rather than waiting until the base is impossible to navigate.

  1. Choose the destination zone first. Clear the reserved edge or an empty room before removing a working station.
  2. Move storage categories before furniture. Keep ores, bars, food and tools accessible while benches are relocated.
  3. Preserve one functioning crafting point. Move or add the replacement workbench before dismantling the only workbench you use.
  4. Test the new cluster. Confirm that the station opens, the chest can be reached and nearby materials are recognized.
  5. Remove obsolete walls last. Once the route works, reclaim decorative or temporary construction tiles for expansion.

This staged method avoids a common failure mode: dismantling everything for a better plan and discovering that the replacement stations or input chests are not yet accessible.

Common first-base mistakes

Decorating before establishing circulation

Decorative rooms feel productive, but early progression is driven by tools, ore processing and new stations. Build a readable grid first. Add walls, floors and furniture after the central path and storage access work.

Spreading stations across the map

A Furnace at one end, a Cooking Pot at another and a workbench in a third room create unnecessary trips. Group stations by the materials they consume, then expand the group when a new tier appears.

Using every available tile

An empty rectangle is an asset. If you fill it with low-use furniture, the next workbench, chest row or farm will force a demolition project. Keep at least one obvious expansion edge until your station needs stabilize.

Relying on an untested chest distance

Nearby-chest access is useful, but player-reported tile distances are version-sensitive. Place the chest directly beside the station when possible, and test any compact arrangement in the current build rather than assuming a community measurement is universal.

Making categories too specific too soon

Ten narrowly labeled chests can be slower than three broad, consistently placed categories. Start broad, split only when retrieval becomes difficult and keep the category order stable as you add capacity.

A practical expansion checklist

Before placing a new station or room, check the following:

  • Is the main walkway still clear from the entrance or waypoint to storage?
  • Can the station’s input chest be placed beside it?
  • Does the new object belong to crafting, processing, farming, livestock, merchants or automation?
  • Will the addition block the next workbench tier or anvil?
  • Can you reach every chest and station front-on?
  • Are you using the reserved expansion edge before demolishing a functioning cluster?
  • If the station is specialized or seasonal, can it live outside the daily route?

If the answer to the last two questions is no, delay decoration and extend the base instead. The point of the first layout is not to predict every future room; it is to make each future change cheap.

How the layout should feel as you progress

At the Basic Workbench stage, the base may be one compact room with a clear center, a few chests and a Furnace and Cooking Pot on one side. After copper, it should become two or three recognizable clusters. As the Tin, Iron, Scarlet, Octarine, Galaxite and Solarite workbench tiers and specialized stations arrive, those clusters can become rooms connected by the same original walkway.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful layout therefore changes in appearance without changing its logic. Storage remains near the stations that use it, processing remains separate from the busiest crafting approach, and the expansion edge absorbs new requirements. That continuity is more valuable than a fixed blueprint because the station catalog and your resource categories both grow over time.
