For a child who wants to roam a city, drive around and take on silly missions, LEGO City: Undercover is the closest match in this shortlist. Minecraft is better for building and free-form exploration; Wobbly Life offers casual roaming and tasks; and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom bring larger fantasy worlds with combat and more involved play. None is an automatic age fit: check the exact edition’s rating and content notes, then consider your child’s comfort with violence, humor, reading, puzzles and online features.
Which open-world game should you try first?
Choose based on what your child likes about the idea of GTA—not just the size of its map. If the appeal is city streets, vehicles and comic missions, start with LEGO City: Undercover. What to expect from each game
LEGO City: Undercover: a comic city to explore
This is the most direct fit if the draw is a city, vehicles and missions rather than GTA’s mature tone. ESRB describes it as an open-world adventure. Its E10+ category is only part of the picture: the rating also flags cartoon violence and crude humor, and its summary mentions cartoon firearms, arrests, slapstick and bathroom humor. Minecraft: make the world your own
For a child more interested in building and discovering than following a fixed story, Minecraft offers an open-ended block world, crafting, exploration and solo play, as well as multiplayer. ESRB assigns it E10+ with Fantasy Violence, Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. Minecraft’s official guide also lists PEGI 7; these are separate rating systems, not interchangeable guarantees of suitability. Wobbly Life: casual wandering with tasks
Wobbly Life pairs roaming with task-based play. ESRB rates it E, but the category does not mean there are no content considerations: its descriptors are Crude Humor and Mild Fantasy Violence. Breath of the Wild: exploration with fantasy combat
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild emphasizes a large fantasy world, exploration, foraging, shrines and combat. ESRB rates it E10+ and lists Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes and Use of Alcohol. Those descriptors make it worth checking the full summary if any of those elements are a concern. Tears of the Kingdom: a more involved fantasy adventure
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is another open-world option for a child ready for exploration and combat in a more involved adventure. Its E10+ rating lists Fantasy Violence and Mild Suggestive Themes; unlike Breath of the Wild, the cited ESRB summary does not list Use of Alcohol. ESRB lists the game for Nintendo Switch. How to choose for your child
Age categories help narrow the list, but the content descriptors are more useful for identifying a specific mismatch. A child comfortable with fantasy combat may still dislike crude humor or suggestive themes. Also think about how much guidance the child needs: open-ended building gives fewer built-in directions than a mission-led game, while exploration-heavy adventures can ask more of a player’s reading, navigation and puzzle-solving. Ratings do not measure those skills, so consider what your child can enjoy without frustration.
- Wants a city and vehicles: consider LEGO City: Undercover, and review its cartoon-violence and crude-humor notes.
- Wants to build or invent: consider Minecraft; decide whether solo play or multiplayer is appropriate.
- Wants casual roaming and tasks: consider Wobbly Life, while checking its humor and mild fantasy-violence descriptors.
- Enjoys fantasy action and challenges: consider either Zelda game, comparing their distinct descriptors and the child’s readiness for involved play.
- Has a specific sensitivity: read the rating summary rather than relying on the age category alone.
Check multiplayer, purchases and device controls
Online interaction and spending are separate decisions from whether a game’s world is suitable. Minecraft’s official parents’ guide says multiplayer is turned off by default for child accounts, while adult account settings determine whether it is enabled. The game’s ESRB listing also flags Users Interact and In-Game Purchases, so review the account and purchase settings for the edition and service your child will use. Device parental controls can help block games by rating, limit spending and play time, and restrict online communication. Exact options and defaults vary by device and service; set up a child account and check the current controls on your console or device. ESRB’s parental-controls guide describes the kinds of settings families can use.

What ratings can—and cannot—tell you
ESRB ratings combine an age category with content descriptors and interactive elements to help parents make informed choices. They are a useful screening tool, not a personalized judgment about a child’s readiness or enjoyment. In its 2024 figures, ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable games were E or E10+. Hart Research Associates’ 2025 survey, as reported by ESRB, found that 83% of parents with children who play video games were aware of ESRB ratings and 77% of parents whose children play regularly checked ratings before buying. These figures describe ratings and parent-reported awareness and behavior; they do not establish whether a particular game suits an individual child. See ESRB’s ratings information.
Parents sometimes describe the desired experience as a “child-friendly GTA type game” or a sandbox where a child can roam and explore. Those phrases appear in public player discussions, but they are anecdotal ways of expressing what families are looking for—not evidence that a game is right for a particular child. One discussion asks about open-world games for young kids, and another asks for sandbox games for two young children.
