Choose a dual-screen retro handheld for the games you want to play—not for its screen count. Two displays do not guarantee that a device can run Nintendo 3DS games: check DS and 3DS capability separately, then confirm touch support, emulator setup, controls, portability, hinge and warranty, and model-specific battery evidence.
Start with the games you want to play
Make a short list of the specific games and systems you care about. A device that handles Nintendo DS games may still lack the performance for 3DS titles. Specialist comparisons distinguish lower-cost, DS-oriented handhelds from models they consider stronger candidates for both DS and 3DS, but those rankings are secondary-source judgments—not universal compatibility guarantees or independent tests.

For each device, seek evidence for the particular system and games you plan to use. A chipset name or a clamshell design with two panels is not proof of compatibility. Check the exact hardware revision, software and firmware, and whether the emulator you intend to use supports the relevant games and display arrangement.

Check both displays and the lower screen’s touch input
Confirm that both panels are usable in the games and emulator you expect to play. Compare their sizes and aspect ratios, and check whether the lower display is actually touch-capable. Nintendo’s 3DS family reference identifies the lower screen as a touchscreen, but a modern dual-screen handheld may use a different touch technology.
In particular, find out whether the lower screen uses capacitive touch. Original DS and 3DS styluses are designed for resistive screens and may not work correctly on a modern capacitive panel. If you expect to use touch-heavy games, check what input method the device supports and whether a compatible capacitive touchscreen stylus is needed.

Find out how much emulator setup is involved
On Android handhelds, the operating system may identify one panel as the primary display and the other as an external display. Emulator settings may need to assign the game screens correctly. Before purchase, look for setup instructions for the exact device and emulator, and check whether display mapping is straightforward or requires manual configuration. Assess the hinge, warranty, and portability
A clamshell hinge is a moving part, so inspect construction details and read the warranty, return period, and seller terms. Seek credible long-term owner reports for the exact model. No comparative failure-rate statistics establish that one current model’s hinge is more reliable than another, so avoid treating an attractive design or isolated anecdote as proof of durability.

Compare the closed dimensions and weight, and consider grip, button placement, and whether the device suits your hands and travel habits. A large screen can be useful at home but less convenient to carry; the right balance depends on where and how you play.
Use runtime evidence, not battery capacity alone
Prefer runtime reports for the exact handheld under a workload similar to yours. Battery capacity in mAh does not tell you how many hours you will play: screen brightness, performance demands, software, and game choice affect runtime.

Compare the complete cost and the evidence behind the specs
Compare the current total cost, including shipping, storage, accessories, and warranty, and account for regional or retailer differences. Price and availability can change, so check the current listing and confirm that the seller and warranty terms meet your needs.
Manufacturer announcements can establish advertised specifications, but not independent performance or runtime. For example, AYANEO’s August 18, 2025 announcement describes the Pocket DS as an Android clamshell with a 7-inch 1080p 165Hz OLED main display, a 5-inch 4:3 LCD secondary display, a Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, and an 8,000mAh battery. Those are manufacturer specifications; the cited announcement does not provide a directly comparable runtime figure. Check the current configuration, price, and availability before relying on the listing.
