If you want an open-world game that makes you feel powerful, start with Cyberpunk 2077 for build-driven strength, Elden Ring for growing stronger while facing tough fights, or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for creative problem-solving. “Overpowered” means something different in each: a character build can dominate through synergies, exploration can open new ways to tackle a challenge, or a toolbox can let you reshape the situation.
Choose the kind of power fantasy you want
| Game | How power feels | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 | Build progression, perks, weapons, and cyberware working together | Players who enjoy planning a character and feeling its capabilities grow |
| Elden Ring | Exploration and flexible weapons, magic, and skills—without removing the challenge | Players who want to become stronger but still have to execute in demanding fights |
| The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | Creative agency through imaginative inventions and experimentation | Players who want to feel resourceful and solve situations in their own way |
| The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | A broad open-world fantasy-RPG option; a specific power curve is not established by the sources cited here | Players looking for a familiar fantasy setting, with the caveat that the overpowered claim is less substantiated |
Cyberpunk 2077: power through a focused build
Cyberpunk 2077 is the clearest pick if your preferred power fantasy is assembling a character around a playstyle. CD Projekt Red’s Bullet-Time Ninja build breakdown describes a melee approach built around perk investment, cyberware capacity, melee weapons, and the Sandevistan. The appeal is the interaction between those choices: progression gives you a plan to develop, rather than a guarantee that every character or difficulty setting will feel easy.

The guide is dated March 27, 2024. Treat it as an example of the game’s build-first appeal, not a promise that its exact recommendations match every later balance update. If you want a character to feel deliberately engineered around a combat fantasy, this is the strongest fit among these recommendations.

Elden Ring is a better match if you want room to experiment and improve, but still want powerful enemies to demand attention. Bandai Namco’s official game page says players can define their playstyle by experimenting with weapons, magical abilities, and skills found throughout the world. That variety supports different approaches to combat; it does not mean that bosses become trivial.
#1 Best Overall
Exploration and character development can help you find a route or approach that suits you, while the game retains demanding encounters. PC Gamer’s open-world recommendations also characterize it through difficult bosses and high-level areas. Choose it if the satisfying part of feeling powerful is meeting a hard fight with better tools and sharper execution—not simply being able to ignore danger.
Tears of the Kingdom: feel powerful by inventing solutions
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom offers a different kind of power fantasy: creative agency. GamesRadar’s 2026 open-world selection highlights Hyrule as a playground for imaginative inventions, alongside quests, secrets, and lore. That makes it a natural recommendation if you enjoy experimenting with tools and finding your own way through situations.

- Available Now - Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology.
- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Uncover the hidden wonders of Tsushima in this open-world action adventure.
- The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.
The evidence supports creativity and resourcefulness more clearly than a claim that the game makes you unbeatable in combat. Pick it for the feeling of making a clever plan work, rather than for a guaranteed overpowering combat build.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim remains a recognizable open-world RPG choice in current selections from PC Gamer and GamesRadar. Those recommendations establish it as a broad candidate, but do not substantiate a particular progression mechanic or a current edition-specific power curve. It is reasonable to consider if you want a familiar fantasy RPG; the stronger evidence-backed recommendations for a defined power fantasy are the three above.

The Witcher 3
PlayStation’s open-world game selection supports The Witcher 3 as a fantasy open world combining combat and magical abilities. That makes it relevant if those ingredients appeal to you, but the cited material does not establish a specifically overpowered progression curve.

- Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want to plan a specialized character and build power through coordinated upgrades.
- Choose Elden Ring if you want a range of combat styles and the satisfaction of getting stronger while serious challenges remain.
- Choose Tears of the Kingdom if creative tools and inventive problem-solving sound more rewarding than a promise of combat dominance.
- Consider Skyrim or The Witcher 3 for their open-world fantasy-RPG appeal, but do not assume the cited recommendations establish a particular overpowered build or curve.
These are editorial recommendations, not a measured ranking. How overpowered a game feels depends on the character choices, difficulty, updates, and the kind of power you enjoy.
