Hermes Agent is the closest self-hosted OpenClaw replacement in 2026. It is the option most often identified by current roundups as having the nearest feature set and an OpenClaw migration path. If your priority is a tiny footprint, look at ZeroClaw, Nanobot or PicoClaw. For stronger isolation of untrusted prompts and tools, compare NanoClaw and IronClaw. Open WebUI, LibreChat, Jan, Dify and n8n are useful self-hosted products, but they are chat or workflow platforms rather than OpenClaw clones.
Many online rankings rely on secondary coverage rather than independent testing. Treat licence, performance, security and price statements below as reported information, and verify current requirements in each project’s own documentation before deploying an agent with access to files, accounts or money.

What counts as an OpenClaw alternative?
OpenClaw is an open-source, self-hostable personal-agent project. Secondary guides describe it as MIT-licensed and point to the official repository at github.com/openclaw/openclaw. An “alternative” can mean two different things:
- A replacement agent: it can plan tasks, call tools and operate over a persistent session in a way that resembles OpenClaw.
- A self-hosted AI platform: it gives you a private chat interface, workflow builder or automation engine, but not necessarily an autonomous personal agent.
That distinction matters. Moving from OpenClaw to Hermes Agent is a migration decision; moving to Open WebUI or Dify is a change in product category. A separate project called openclaw.net is a .NET runtime and should not be confused with the OpenClaw agent project.

Hermes Agent: the closest replacement
Hermes Agent, from Nous Research, is the default choice when you want to preserve the feel of an autonomous personal agent rather than start with a blank workflow canvas. Several secondary guides place it first because they describe the largest community and the closest feature parity with OpenClaw. Those are editorial judgments, not the result of a published independent benchmark.
What is established
- It is written in Python.
- It is reported as MIT-licensed.
- A built-in migration command is reported for OpenClaw users:
hermes claw migrate. - Optional Nous Portal model plans are separate paid services; the agent software itself is described as free.
The migration command is the most concrete reason to begin here. Before running it, make a backup of your OpenClaw configuration, credentials and workspace. Review the command’s current help output and migration notes from the project, because an agent’s configuration schema, tool permissions and model names can change between releases.
Who should choose it
Choose Hermes Agent if you value an existing agent workflow, Python extensibility and a relatively conventional migration route more than the smallest possible binary. It is also the sensible first experiment when you do not yet know which tools your replacement must support: a closer feature set reduces the number of behavioral changes you have to debug at once.
Trade-offs
Python generally brings a broader library ecosystem, but it can require a runtime, dependency management and more disk space than a single compiled binary. No current official minimum RAM, CPU, supported operating systems or release numbers are provided, so do not size a VPS from a roundup’s general description alone. Confirm those requirements in the current project documentation.
Lightweight agents for modest hardware
These projects are aimed at users who care about low memory use, quick startup or deployment on inexpensive machines. Published figures are secondary claims and should be treated as indicative rather than test results.
ZeroClaw
ZeroClaw is written in Rust and is described as a single binary suitable for low-cost servers and Raspberry Pi devices. One unnamed guide reports an approximately 8.8 MB binary and startup below 10 milliseconds. Neither figure was accompanied by a reproducible test specification, hardware details or a primary project benchmark, so use them only as clues when comparing installation footprints.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Secondary guides describe the licence as dual MIT or Apache-2.0. A single binary can simplify upgrades and reduce runtime dependencies, but it does not remove the need to isolate credentials, restrict tools and monitor the process. Confirm supported CPU architectures and the actual release artifact before choosing a board or VPS.

Nanobot
Nanobot takes a deliberately small-core approach. A roundup describes a readable core of about 4,000 lines; that is a source-code-size observation, not a performance guarantee. A smaller codebase can make auditing and customization easier, while a young project may have fewer integrations or migration helpers than a larger agent.
Nanobot is a good candidate when you want to understand and modify the core behavior yourself. Ask three questions before production use: which model providers are supported, how tools are permissioned, and whether state survives a restart. No current official hardware minimums or canonical repository are provided, so verify both the installation method and maintenance cadence.
PicoClaw
PicoClaw is aimed at edge and low-power hardware. The project is a fit when the machine is constrained by power draw, storage or intermittent connectivity and you can accept a narrower feature envelope. No verified RAM, CPU or storage numbers are published. Test the exact model, tools and context length you plan to use on the target device; an agent that starts quickly can still become unusable when a model or browser tool consumes the remaining memory.

- Measure free RAM and storage on the intended machine during your real workload, not just at idle.
- Run a harmless tool call, a long-context conversation and a restart/recovery test.
- Check whether the project ships binaries for your architecture or expects a language runtime and compiler.
- Record the model backend, context limit and tool set used in your test so a later result is comparable.
Security-focused alternatives
Security is an architecture question, not a star rating. An agent that can read files, send messages or execute commands should be treated as a privileged service. NanoClaw, IronClaw and TrustClaw emphasize boundaries around those actions, but they make different compromises.
NanoClaw
NanoClaw is reported as MIT-licensed, free to self-host and designed to run each agent in an isolated sandbox. Secondary sources disagree about the mechanism: one describes a Docker container per agent, while another describes a microVM sandbox. Because that difference affects kernel isolation, networking and operational cost, confirm the implementation in the current repository before relying on it for hostile workloads.
Use NanoClaw when separate sandboxes per agent are more important than a familiar OpenClaw migration path. Even with isolation, apply least privilege: mount only the directories an agent needs, deny outbound network access by default where practical, and keep secrets outside the agent’s writable workspace.
IronClaw
IronClaw, associated with NEAR AI, is written in Rust and is reported as dual MIT OR Apache-2.0. Its repository is identified in secondary coverage as nearai/ironclaw. The design uses a WebAssembly sandbox for tool execution, giving you a clear policy boundary between the agent and extensions.

A hosted option called NEAR AI Cloud is reported to run in a trusted execution environment. A secondary report lists a free starter allocation of one agent with $5 in credits and paid plans from $20 per month; those prices were not checked against the provider’s current pricing page, so treat them as provisional and verify before budgeting. The hosted route trades some local control for managed infrastructure, while self-hosting keeps deployment and patching in your hands.
TrustClaw
TrustClaw is described as open source and self-hostable, with a focus on secure application actions through OAuth and sandboxing. OAuth-scoped permissions can be safer than handing an agent a long-lived password, but they also mean that the service mediates more of your workflow. Choose it when controlled app actions matter more than having every component run locally.
Self-hosted platforms that are not OpenClaw clones
These tools can be excellent choices if your actual need is private chat or repeatable automation. They should not be presented as drop-in autonomous-agent replacements.
Open WebUI
Open WebUI is described as the most widely adopted chat interface in this group and is commonly paired with local Ollama models. It suits a household or lab that wants browser-based conversations over models running on its own hardware. A chat interface normally waits for a user turn; it does not automatically become a persistent agent with unrestricted tools.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
LibreChat
LibreChat provides a ChatGPT-style interface for a private team deployment. It is a practical front end when several users need shared access controls and conversation history. Plan separately for model serving, authentication, backups and any tool connectors; the interface alone does not supply an OpenClaw-style agent loop.
Jan
Jan is designed to run fully offline on the user’s machine. That makes it attractive for sensitive prompts or travel without dependable internet. Offline operation also limits access to cloud models and external tools, so decide whether local privacy outweighs capability for your workload.
Dify
Dify is a visual workflow builder normally deployed with Docker Compose. It is the better fit when you want to draw a controlled sequence of model calls, retrieval steps and business rules, then hand that workflow to other users. Docker Compose adds an operational layer: maintain environment files, persistent volumes, image updates and a backup plan.

n8n
n8n is a workflow-automation platform whose community edition is free to self-host. It can connect services and schedule repeatable jobs, but a workflow with an AI node is not automatically an autonomous personal agent. Use explicit triggers, approval steps and rate limits when an n8n flow can modify external systems.

A safe self-hosting plan
The software choice is only one part of running an agent. Use this sequence for any candidate, adapting the commands to the project’s current documentation.
- Define the trust boundary. List files, APIs, email accounts, calendars and payment systems the agent might touch. Start with none; add one permission at a time.
- Choose the machine. A home computer, Raspberry Pi-class board, VPS or Docker host each has different backup, power and network risks. Do not assume a lightweight label means a particular RAM requirement; obtain the project’s current requirements.
- Pin and record versions. Save the release identifier, model name, configuration files and container image digests where applicable. This makes a rollback possible when an update changes tool behavior.
- Separate secrets. Store API keys in a secret manager or protected environment, not in prompts, chat history or a repository. Give each integration its own revocable credential.
- Constrain tools. Use read-only mounts first, allow-list commands and domains, disable shell or browser tools you do not need, and require a human confirmation for destructive actions.
- Test with harmless fixtures. Use a disposable directory and test data. Verify that the agent refuses an unauthorized request, survives a restart and records enough logs to investigate a failure.
- Back up state and configuration. Keep encrypted backups of prompts, policies and important agent state. Test restoring to a clean machine before trusting the deployment.
- Monitor and patch. Watch CPU, memory, disk growth, outbound connections and failed tool calls. Subscribe to the project’s release and security channels, then schedule updates rather than applying them blindly during a critical workflow.
Migration from OpenClaw without losing control
If you select Hermes Agent, treat hermes claw migrate as a starting point, not proof that every behavior transferred correctly.
- Export or copy your OpenClaw configuration and workspace into a dated, access-controlled backup.
- Inventory every tool, model endpoint, scheduled task and credential. Remove obsolete permissions before migration.
- Run the migration in a disposable environment first. Compare prompts, tool policies, memory files and scheduled actions line by line.
- Replace secrets with newly scoped test credentials. Do not let a first-run migration inherit production tokens.
- Replay representative tasks with no external side effects, then enable one production integration at a time.
- Keep the old environment available for rollback until logs show that the replacement handles your critical tasks reliably.
No equivalent migration command is currently documented for ZeroClaw, Nanobot, PicoClaw, NanoClaw or IronClaw. For those projects, plan a manual export of prompts, memory and permissions unless the current project documentation says otherwise.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Costs, hosting and resource expectations
The software in this list is generally described as free to self-host, but “free” does not mean zero cost. You still pay for electricity or a VPS, storage, backups, model inference and the time required to patch an exposed service. Hosted model plans are separate from self-hosted agent software.
Hermes Agent’s optional Nous Portal plans are paid separately from the reported free software. IronClaw’s hosted NEAR AI Cloud tiers are reported secondarily as a free starter plan with one agent and $5 of credits, followed by plans from $20 per month; verify current terms before relying on those numbers. No current, primary-source pricing was established for the other projects.
Hardware requirements are similarly unsettled. The only concrete figures reported publicly are the unverified ZeroClaw binary size, startup claim and Nanobot source-line estimate. Select hardware by measuring your chosen model and tool workload, not by assuming that a project’s marketing category guarantees a particular memory footprint.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Security claims and how to read them
Several online articles make alarming claims about OpenClaw vulnerabilities, including a frequently repeated figure of 138 CVEs in roughly two months. That number could not be verified against a primary vulnerability record and should not be treated as established fact. Other named incidents, such as “ClawBleed” or “ClawHavoc,” likewise require primary-source confirmation before they influence a deployment decision.
The practical lesson is independent of any headline: an autonomous agent expands your attack surface. Prefer explicit permission boundaries, short-lived credentials, isolated workspaces, network egress controls, audit logs and human approval for irreversible actions. A project that advertises containers, microVMs or WebAssembly still needs correct configuration; a disabled sandbox, broad volume mount or unrestricted token can defeat the design.
Decision guide
Pick Hermes Agent when migration effort is your main constraint
Its reported migration command and closer feature parity make it the least disruptive first trial for an existing OpenClaw user. Validate the current command, supported tools and Python environment before moving production state.
Pick ZeroClaw, Nanobot or PicoClaw when the device is the constraint
Use ZeroClaw for a compiled single-binary approach, Nanobot for a small and inspectable core, or PicoClaw for an edge and low-power target. In each case, benchmark your actual model and tool chain on the target hardware.
Pick NanoClaw or IronClaw when untrusted input is the constraint
Confirm NanoClaw’s actual sandbox mechanism and evaluate IronClaw’s WebAssembly boundary and deployment model. Neither removes the need for least-privilege credentials and network policy.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Pick a general platform when you do not need an autonomous agent
Open WebUI, LibreChat and Jan address private conversational access; Dify and n8n address designed workflows and integrations. They can be safer and easier to operate when a human or a deterministic workflow should remain in control.
What is still unconfirmed
Before committing to any option, verify the facts that secondary coverage does not settle: official repository locations for Hermes Agent, NanoClaw and ZeroClaw; the licence files; supported operating systems and CPU architectures; RAM and CPU requirements; current release activity; NanoClaw’s container-versus-microVM implementation; and hosted-plan pricing. The absence of a figure here is not evidence that a project lacks the capability—it means you should obtain the value from the project’s current primary documentation.
