The best Docker app for a VPS is the one that solves a specific problem and fits the server you can actually maintain. Start with a small, purpose-built stack: Vaultwarden and Uptime Kuma are unusually light; Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Gitea, Paperless-ngx, n8n, and Home Assistant each serve a different role; Immich is excellent for a private photo library but needs substantially more memory than most utility containers.
A 2GB VPS can handle a very small utility stack, 4GB is a practical band for lighter services, and 8GB or more is a safer starting point for Immich, Nextcloud, or several databases. Those are planning bands rather than guarantees. Indexing, media transcoding, machine-learning jobs, concurrent users, storage speed, and backup activity determine the real load.

Quick picks: which Docker app fits your job?
| Need | Best starting app | What it does | Capacity and operational warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private files and collaboration | Nextcloud | File sync, sharing, calendars, contacts, and office integrations in one private cloud. | More involved than a single-purpose utility; plan persistent storage, a database, upgrades, and backups. |
| Personal photos and video | Immich | A Google Photos-like library with upload, search, and organization features. | Official baseline is at least 6GB RAM and 2 CPU cores; 8GB RAM and 4 cores are recommended. Use local SSD storage for its PostgreSQL data. |
| Passwords | Vaultwarden | A lightweight server compatible with Bitwarden clients. | Usually a good small-VPS starter, but its database is critical data. Require HTTPS, strong administration controls, and tested backups. |
| Personal media streaming | Jellyfin | Streams a self-managed film, television, music, and home-video library. | Direct play is light; transcoding can make CPU, memory, storage, and possibly hardware acceleration the limiting factors. |
| Service monitoring | Uptime Kuma | Checks endpoints and sends alerts when your services fail. | Small footprint, but it only helps if notifications, disk monitoring, and certificate checks are configured. |
| Git repositories and issues | Gitea | Compact Git hosting for private projects and team workflows. | Simple to run compared with larger developer platforms, yet repositories and database data still need off-site backups. |
| Scanned records | Paperless-ngx | Imports, OCRs, tags, and searches personal documents. | OCR and indexing create bursts of CPU use; storage and retention planning matter before importing an archive. |
| API and scheduled workflows | n8n | Connects services with event-driven and scheduled automations. | Workflows may contain powerful credentials. Keep secrets out of compose files and restrict public exposure. |
| Home-device control | Home Assistant | Automates and supervises devices in a home environment. | Needs a secure network path to the home and adds connectivity and maintenance complexity on a remote VPS. |
Do not interpret the table as a shopping list. Every additional container adds an update path, a backup set, a network boundary, and another way for an outage to affect you. A compact stack that is monitored and restorable is better than a crowded server that merely starts successfully.
How much VPS capacity do these apps need?
Choose capacity from the heaviest workload first, then reserve room for the operating system, databases, reverse proxy, monitoring, backups, and short-lived jobs. A service can appear idle most of the day and still need headroom when it indexes a library, imports documents, generates thumbnails, or transcodes a stream.

| VPS band | Reasonable starting use | What to avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| 2GB RAM | One or two small utilities, such as Vaultwarden and Uptime Kuma, with modest data and few users. | It is not a comfortable target for Immich, heavy Nextcloud use, OCR batches, machine-learning jobs, or several databases. |
| 4GB RAM | Light services and a carefully chosen combination of small apps. | A 4GB server should not be treated as a safe home for Immich plus machine learning or other bursty services; memory pressure can make the whole host unreliable. |
| 8GB RAM or more | A safer starting point for Immich, Nextcloud, or multiple databases, subject to actual usage. | Eight gigabytes does not guarantee smooth transcoding, fast indexing, or unlimited users. CPU, disk I/O, and concurrency may become the next bottleneck. |
Immich has a higher published baseline
Immich’s current documentation states that a smooth experience, especially during asset upload, requires at least 6GB of RAM. Its baseline is 6GB RAM and 2 CPU cores, while 8GB RAM and 4 cores are recommended. These figures come from the Immich project’s 2026 requirements documentation, not from a universal benchmark. PostgreSQL data should live on local SSD storage rather than a network share.
That baseline is why a 4GB VPS is a poor place to combine Immich with several other major services. Even an 8GB host can need careful scheduling when Immich is generating thumbnails, running searches, or performing machine-learning tasks. If the photo library is the reason you bought the VPS, size for it first and add only lightweight services afterward.

Nextcloud: the broad private cloud
Choose Nextcloud when the requirement is broader than file storage: shared folders, synchronization across devices, calendars, contacts, and office integrations. It is a general-purpose platform, so it can replace several SaaS-style functions in one interface.
The trade-off is operational scope. You must plan persistent file storage, database maintenance, upgrades, user access, and backup retention. A small VPS can run a modest installation, but large libraries, many users, previews, and office collaboration increase both memory and disk I/O. Keep the application and database on dependable storage, and decide where uploaded files and database dumps will live before inviting other users.
Immich: a private photo and video library
Immich is the clearest choice for a Google Photos-like personal library. Its official production guidance recommends Docker Compose, and the project’s quick-start documentation repeats the 6GB RAM and 2-core minimum. Plan for at least 6GB RAM, with 8GB and 4 cores the more comfortable target.
Photo applications grow in two directions: original media consumes storage, while thumbnails, machine-learning indexes, and database records consume additional space and I/O. Put PostgreSQL on local SSD storage; a network share can make database operations unreliable or painfully slow. Keep originals and database backups in a separate, off-site destination so a VPS failure does not destroy the library and its catalog together.

Vaultwarden is a compact Bitwarden-compatible server and a sensible first application for a small VPS. Its resource demand is usually modest compared with photo management or media transcoding, which makes it suitable for a utility-focused stack.

Its data is unusually sensitive. Terminate HTTPS at a reverse proxy, use a long unique administration secret, enable multi-factor authentication in clients where supported, and never expose the database port. Back up the password database off the VPS and perform a restore drill before trusting it with every login. A low-memory service is not low-risk data.
Jellyfin: self-hosted media streaming
Jellyfin serves a personal library to phones, browsers, televisions, and consoles. The key sizing question is not the container’s idle memory; it is whether each viewer can direct-play the file or whether the server must transcode it.
Direct play generally avoids the largest CPU cost. Transcoding video, subtitles, or incompatible audio can consume substantial CPU and temporary disk space, and several simultaneous viewers multiply the load. Inventory your codecs, resolutions, subtitle formats, and expected concurrent streams before choosing a VPS. If your workload needs hardware acceleration, verify that the chosen VPS exposes suitable hardware; a generic virtual CPU may not provide it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Uptime Kuma: monitoring for the rest of the stack
Uptime Kuma is a small status and alerting service that can check public endpoints, internal services, certificates, and selected ports. It is especially useful when the same server hosts the applications it monitors: an alert can reveal a failed container, an expired certificate, or a disk that is filling before users report the problem.
Monitoring is only useful when alerts leave the VPS. Configure an external notification channel, monitor memory and disk as well as HTTP status, and test an alert by stopping a non-critical service. Do not let a monitoring dashboard create a false sense of safety; it cannot replace backups or restore tests.
Gitea: compact Git hosting
Gitea provides repositories, issues, access control, and team workflows without the footprint of a much larger code-hosting platform. It is a good fit for private projects, infrastructure configuration, game tools, and documentation when you are willing to administer the service yourself.
Repository data and the application database must be backed up together often enough to match your work rate. Keep administrative access behind strong authentication, limit public registration, and read release notes before upgrades. A Git remote is not automatically a backup if it lives on the same VPS as the working copy.

Paperless-ngx: searchable document management
Paperless-ngx turns scans and imported files into a searchable archive with OCR, tags, and metadata. It is useful for receipts, warranties, manuals, and personal records that otherwise disappear into folders.
OCR and indexing are bursty workloads. Importing years of documents can temporarily consume CPU and storage I/O, while originals and generated data continue to grow. Establish retention rules, keep the document directory on persistent storage, and back up both files and the database. If you expose the service publicly, require HTTPS and restrict account creation.
n8n: automation with a large security perimeter
n8n connects APIs, webhooks, schedules, and data transformations. It can automate backups, notifications, media workflows, and administrative tasks, but its usefulness also makes it a high-value target.
Store credentials in an environment or secret-management mechanism rather than committing them to a compose file or public repository. Restrict webhook and editor exposure, use HTTPS, and separate n8n from databases and internal services with Docker networks and firewall rules. Treat every workflow token as compromised if it appears in logs or source control, and rotate it promptly.
Home Assistant: powerful when the network path is right
Home Assistant is appropriate when a VPS can reach the home network securely, usually through a deliberately designed VPN or private tunnel. Without that path, the server cannot reliably control devices that remain behind a home router.
This arrangement adds failure modes: tunnel outages, changing home IP addresses, firewall mistakes, and dependence on the home connection. Keep the management interface private, avoid opening broad inbound access to the house, and document how to recover automation if either the VPS or the home network is unavailable.
Can Nextcloud, Immich, Jellyfin, and Vaultwarden share one VPS?
They can coexist, but “can start” is not the same as “will remain reliable.” Immich alone has a published 6GB RAM minimum and an 8GB/4-core recommendation. Nextcloud adds a database and file operations, while Jellyfin may need sustained CPU for transcoding. Vaultwarden is comparatively light, but it does not offset the heavier services.

On a 4GB VPS, do not plan this four-app bundle as a normal workload. On an 8GB or larger server, it may be workable for a small household if Immich indexing, Jellyfin transcoding, backups, and other bursty jobs are controlled, but there is no universal guarantee. Measure memory, CPU load, disk latency, and swap activity under your real workload. If photo processing or transcoding regularly saturates the host, move the heaviest service to a separate machine or VPS rather than tuning container limits indefinitely.

A maintainable Docker deployment pattern
Use one directory and one Compose project per application. This keeps upgrades, logs, volumes, and rollback decisions understandable.
- Create an application directory. For example, use a path such as
/srv/apps/vaultwardenand keep each service in its own directory. - Store the Compose definition in version control. Define images, ports, volumes, networks, environment variables, and restart policies in the YAML file. Do not commit passwords, API tokens, or encryption keys.
- Keep secrets in a protected environment file. Set restrictive file permissions and document which variables are required. A secret manager is preferable as the stack grows.
- Use named volumes or deliberate bind mounts. Know exactly where each database, upload directory, configuration file, and generated thumbnail is stored. Avoid anonymous volumes that you cannot identify during a restore.
- Start and inspect the project. Run
docker compose up -d, then checkdocker compose psanddocker compose logs --tail=100. Confirm that health checks pass before making the service public. - Put a reverse proxy in front of internet-facing apps. Terminate HTTPS there, route only the required hostnames, and keep database ports, Docker sockets, and administration ports private.
- Separate networks by trust level. A public web application should not automatically have network access to every database or internal service. Connect only the containers that need to communicate.
- Write down the upgrade and rollback path. Record image tags, environment changes, migration steps, and the backup to restore if an upgrade fails. Read release notes before changing versions.
Compose is a YAML-based way to define images, ports, volumes, and environment variables, and it launches the declared stack with docker compose up -d. The command is simple; the durable part is knowing where data lives and how to restore it.
Security checklist before exposing anything
- Patch the host and install Docker from its supported repository.
- Use HTTPS for every login and API endpoint reachable from the internet.
- Generate unique, long secrets for each service; never reuse the VPS password.
- Enable multi-factor authentication where the application supports it.
- Do not publish database ports or the Docker socket.
- Use a host firewall and allow only required inbound ports, normally SSH and the reverse proxy.
- Pin image tags or follow a documented, controlled update process rather than pulling unreviewed latest images.
- Back up databases and uploaded files off the VPS, then perform a real restore drill.
- Monitor disk space, memory, certificate expiry, and service health.
- Separate high-risk public applications from internal-only services with Docker networks and firewall rules.
Backups, storage, and recovery
A backup plan has two independent parts: the database and the files the database describes. For Nextcloud, Immich, Paperless-ngx, Jellyfin metadata, and Gitea, copying only the database or only the uploads produces an incomplete recovery. Define backup frequency from how much work you can afford to lose, and retain multiple generations so corruption is not copied forever.
Send backups off the VPS to storage in another failure domain. Encrypt sensitive archives, restrict access keys, and monitor backup jobs for failures rather than assuming a scheduled command succeeded. A restore drill should answer three practical questions: where is the newest usable backup, which Compose file and environment values recreate the service, and how long until users can log in and see their data?
Watch disk growth separately from memory. Photos, video, document originals, thumbnails, logs, and database files can fill a VPS long after CPU graphs look normal. Set log rotation, alert before the disk reaches capacity, and leave room for temporary files created during imports, upgrades, and transcoding.
Choosing a stack by scenario
Small utility VPS
Start with Vaultwarden and Uptime Kuma. Add Gitea only if you need private repositories, and keep the user count and storage modest. This combination leaves more headroom for the operating system, backups, and an occasional upgrade.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Private cloud for a household
Use Nextcloud when shared files, calendars, and contacts are the primary goal. Add Vaultwarden for credentials and Uptime Kuma for monitoring. Size storage for the files first, then validate database performance and backup duration before adding more applications.
Photo-first server
Make Immich the sizing anchor: at least 6GB RAM and 2 cores according to its current requirements, with 8GB and 4 cores recommended. Use local SSD for PostgreSQL, keep originals and backups separate, and add only lightweight services until upload and indexing remain responsive.
Media library
Choose Jellyfin after listing the formats your devices can direct-play. If viewers need frequent transcoding, prioritize CPU capacity, temporary disk space, and available hardware acceleration over the number of containers you can fit.
Automation or home control
Run n8n or Home Assistant only after mapping the trust boundary. Both can reach systems beyond the VPS, so private networking, secret handling, and a recovery plan matter more than saving a few megabytes of RAM.
Common failure modes and fixes
The host runs out of memory
Check which container is growing, whether swap is thrashing, and whether an import, thumbnail job, OCR batch, or transcode is active. Stop the bursty job, add memory headroom, or move the heaviest application. Container restart policies do not solve a host that is fundamentally undersized.

Check reverse-proxy upload limits, available disk, TLS errors, and database latency. For Immich, verify that PostgreSQL is on local SSD rather than a network share and that the server meets its published memory baseline.
Streaming stutters
Determine whether the client is direct-playing or forcing a transcode. Inspect CPU use, temporary disk space, subtitle conversion, and the number of simultaneous streams. Lowering video quality can reduce load, but repeated transcoding usually calls for more suitable hardware.
An upgrade breaks the application
Read the release notes, confirm a recent database and file backup, and review environment-variable or migration changes. Restore the previous image tag and data snapshot if the new version cannot be corrected quickly.
Backups exist but cannot be restored
Perform a restore on a separate directory or test host, document every required command and secret, and schedule the drill. A backup that has never been opened is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Bottom line
Build the smallest stack that solves a real problem. Vaultwarden and Uptime Kuma make sensible lightweight starters; Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Gitea, Paperless-ngx, n8n, and Home Assistant are strong choices when their specific jobs justify the maintenance. Treat Immich differently: its official 6GB minimum and 8GB/4-core recommendation make capacity planning essential. Whatever you deploy, HTTPS, private databases, off-site backups, monitoring, controlled upgrades, and a tested restore are part of the application—not optional extras.
