Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most new Docker VPS deployments in 2026, choose Ubuntu LTS—preferably Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or 26.04 LTS—and install Docker Engine from Docker’s official APT repository. Choose Debian 13 (Trixie) when you want a lean, conservative base for a small VPS. Choose RHEL 8, 9, 10, or CentOS Stream 9 or 10 when your organization already standardizes on the Red Hat ecosystem. Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux can be practical in that ecosystem, but they are not listed on the Docker installation pages covered here, so they do not offer the same documented support position.
The short answer
The operating system matters less than the combination of a supported distribution, a maintained release, a correctly configured kernel, and a current Docker installation. For a general-purpose VPS running web services, APIs, databases, CI jobs, or several Compose projects, Ubuntu LTS is the safest default because Docker documents it directly and provides installation instructions for multiple current LTS releases.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Debian Stable is the best alternative when minimalism and a small administrative footprint matter more than using Ubuntu’s broader ecosystem. RHEL and CentOS Stream are sensible when your company already uses Red Hat tooling, policies, subscriptions, or control panels. Do not select an operating system solely because a hosting blog calls it “Docker-friendly”; first check whether Docker documents that distribution and whether the exact release is still maintained.
How Docker’s documented support affects your choice
Docker’s Engine installation overview documents Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL, and CentOS. That is not the same as saying every Linux distribution cannot run containers. It means those four families have a published installation path that Docker expects you to follow. A documented path generally makes repository configuration, package naming, upgrades, and support investigations easier.

| Distribution family | Releases identified in Docker documentation | Documented position | Best fit on a VPS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu | Resolute 26.04 LTS, Noble 24.04 LTS, Jammy 22.04 LTS | Officially documented | General-purpose deployments and teams that want the broadest default choice |
| Debian | Trixie 13 (stable), Bookworm 12 (oldstable) | Officially documented | Small VPS plans, minimal installations, and conservative operations |
| RHEL | A maintained version of RHEL 8, 9, or 10 | Officially documented | Enterprise environments already using Red Hat administration and policy |
| CentOS Stream | Stream 9 and Stream 10 | Officially documented | Teams that need a CentOS-compatible workflow and accept Stream’s position in the RHEL development sequence |
| Rocky Linux | Not listed on the Docker pages covered here | Official status not confirmed | Only when your own support policy and testing process explicitly cover it |
| AlmaLinux | Not listed on the Docker pages covered here | Official status not confirmed | Only when compatibility with your control panel or internal standards outweighs the lack of a documented Docker page |
Docker also notes that Ubuntu derivatives such as Linux Mint are not officially supported, even if Docker may work on them. A working installation is not the same as a supported production platform.
Why Ubuntu LTS is the default recommendation
It gives you a documented Docker path
Docker’s Ubuntu installation page names three LTS releases: 22.04 (Jammy), 24.04 (Noble), and 26.04 (Resolute). For a new VPS in 2026, 24.04 or 26.04 is the natural starting point. Keep 22.04 when an existing application, image, kernel module, or provider template requires it, but avoid choosing an older release without a compatibility reason.
Recommended Free Tools
It is a practical general-purpose host
Ubuntu is familiar to most VPS operators, cloud images, automation systems, and monitoring tools. That familiarity reduces the time needed to diagnose a failed service, configure a firewall, or hand a host to another administrator. Those operational advantages are more important than small differences in idle resource use once containers are running.
Install Docker from Docker’s repository
Use Docker’s own APT repository rather than treating the distribution’s default Docker package as your long-term source. The repository method follows Docker’s release and package layout and avoids mixing instructions intended for a different distribution release. Verify the release codename before adding the repository; Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 use different codenames, and a repository entry for the wrong release can leave APT unable to resolve packages.
When Debian Stable is the better choice
Debian 13 (Trixie) for new installations
Docker’s Debian page identifies Trixie 13 as Stable and Bookworm 12 as Oldstable. Trixie is the cleaner choice for a new VPS unless a provider image or application specifically requires Bookworm. Debian’s base installation can be kept very small, which is useful on a constrained plan where every background service competes with your containers for memory and disk I/O.

Supported architectures
The Docker Debian documentation covers x86_64, armhf, arm64, and ppc64le. Confirm the VPS architecture with uname -m before you provision images or compile native dependencies. An arm64 host can run many multi-architecture images, but an image published only for x86_64 will not become compatible merely because Docker is installed correctly.

The trade-off
Debian’s conservative base is an advantage for stability, but you must be comfortable selecting the right repository and reading Debian-specific release notes. Do not assume that a command written for Ubuntu will use the same package names, repository codename, or service defaults on Debian.
When RHEL or CentOS Stream makes sense
RHEL 8, 9, or 10
Docker documents a maintained version of RHEL 8, 9, or 10. RHEL is the strongest fit when your organization already uses Red Hat subscriptions, SELinux policy, enterprise patching, or compliance tooling. The operating system choice should then be made at the platform-policy level, not by comparing a few megabytes of idle memory.
CentOS Stream 9 or 10
Docker’s CentOS page covers CentOS Stream 9 and 10. Stream sits between Fedora and the corresponding RHEL development process, so establish your organization’s patch cadence and change-control expectations before using it for a production VPS. A team that requires the slower, subscription-backed RHEL lifecycle should use RHEL instead.
Control panels and RHEL-compatible distributions
Hosting and vendor blogs often favor AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux for RHEL compatibility and control panels such as cPanel/WHM. That can be a valid operational requirement, but neither distribution appears on the Docker installation pages identified here. If you choose one, document who supports Docker on that platform, test upgrades on a disposable VPS, and keep a rollback image or snapshot.

What about unsupported distributions?
Docker provides statically linked binaries that run on most Linux distributions. Docker explicitly says it does not provide Docker Engine support on those systems. This route is therefore an exception for a specialized image, appliance, or internal lab—not the default for a customer-facing VPS. Before selecting it, decide who will handle kernel compatibility, security updates, package replacement, and incident troubleshooting when the platform is outside Docker’s documented matrix.
Choose by VPS scenario
| Your situation | Recommended starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| New web stack, API, or Compose application | Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04 LTS | Documented Docker support and a familiar general-purpose administration model |
| Very small VPS with a deliberately minimal base | Debian 13 Trixie | Debian is commonly favored for minimalism; treat this as an operational preference, not a measured benchmark |
| Existing Red Hat patching, SELinux, or compliance standards | RHEL 8, 9, or 10 | Aligns Docker with the host platform your organization already governs |
| CentOS-compatible workflow | CentOS Stream 9 or 10 | These releases are the CentOS versions Docker documents |
| Control panel requires a RHEL-compatible guest | Validate AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux with the panel vendor first | Docker’s official pages covered here do not list those distributions |
| Provider offers only an unsupported distribution | Prefer a supported image; otherwise use static binaries only with an explicit support plan | Static binaries run broadly, but Docker does not support Engine itself on those systems |
Install Docker correctly on Ubuntu or Debian
The exact repository command changes with the distribution and codename. Use Docker’s current installation page for the final commands, but the following sequence prevents the common mistakes that cause broken VPS deployments.
- Confirm the image and architecture. Record the output of
cat /etc/os-releaseanduname -m. Confirm that the release is Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, or 26.04, or Debian 12 or 13, and that your required container images support the host architecture. - Patch the host first. Run the distribution’s package update and upgrade process, reboot if the kernel or critical libraries require it, and reconnect before installing Docker.
- Remove conflicting packages only when appropriate. A previous installation may use packages such as
docker.io, an old Compose package, or distribution-provided container runtimes. Inventory the host before removing anything; do not delete a runtime that another service still needs. - Add Docker’s official repository. Install the required HTTPS transport and keyring components, place Docker’s signing key in the distribution’s recommended keyring location, and create a repository entry using the exact codename reported by the host. Never copy an Ubuntu repository line onto Debian or substitute a codename by guesswork.
- Install the Engine and maintained plugins. Install Docker Engine, the command-line client, containerd, Buildx, and the Compose plugin from the same repository family. Keeping these components aligned avoids mixing a distribution package with a Docker package.
- Enable and test the service. Start Docker with systemd, enable it at boot, then run
sudo docker run --rm hello-world. The test should download the image, create a container, print its confirmation message, and remove the stopped container. - Decide whether to allow non-root use. Adding an administrator to the
dockergroup removes the need forsudo, but membership effectively grants root-level control of the host. Use it only for trusted operators and record the decision in your access policy.
RHEL and CentOS installation considerations
Use Docker’s RHEL or CentOS instructions rather than translating the APT procedure. The package manager is dnf, repository enablement differs, and SELinux and firewall policy are part of the deployment rather than optional afterthoughts. Confirm that your exact RHEL major version is maintained, or that you are on CentOS Stream 9 or 10, before adding Docker’s repository.
On an SELinux-enabled host, test bind mounts, volume labeling, and network access with the policy in enforcing mode. Disabling security controls to make a container start may hide a labeling or permission error and leaves the VPS less defensible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →VPS checks that matter more than the distribution name
Kernel and cgroup behavior
Docker depends on kernel features supplied by the VPS image and provider. Confirm that the provider exposes the capabilities Docker needs and that cgroups are available. A container runtime cannot compensate for a restricted or unusually old virtualization template.

Storage
Container layers, writable layers, image caches, logs, and databases all consume the VPS disk. Put persistent application data in named volumes or deliberate host paths, monitor free space, and configure log rotation. An operating system with a small base image still fails when Docker’s storage directory fills.
Networking and firewalling
Publish only the ports your application needs. Remember that Docker’s port publishing can interact with host firewall rules; test both an allowed connection and an intentionally blocked one. Keep administrative access restricted to a management network or tightly controlled source addresses.
Updates and backups
Patch the host and Docker packages on a schedule, but test upgrades against a staging VPS first. Back up application data and configuration separately from the VPS image. A snapshot helps with a failed upgrade, but it is not a substitute for a restorable database backup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Lifecycle planning in 2026
Release-lifecycle claims deserve careful qualification. Hosting blogs commonly describe Ubuntu LTS support as roughly five years, Debian releases as roughly five years, and AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux as roughly ten years. Those figures were not confirmed against official lifecycle pages here, so treat them as planning hints rather than guarantees. Before deploying, check the live release page for your chosen distribution and Docker’s current installation page; the exact supported versions and repository metadata can change.
Docker’s pages in this set contained age markers that did not perfectly match the 2026 date, while naming Ubuntu 26.04, Debian 13, and RHEL 10. That is another reason to verify the live page immediately before provisioning instead of hard-coding an old tutorial into automation.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Common failure modes and fixes
APT or DNF cannot find Docker packages
Check the repository codename, architecture, signing key permissions, and package-manager cache. The most common cause is using a repository entry for a different release. Remove the incorrect entry, recreate it from Docker’s current instructions, refresh package metadata, and retry.
The service starts, but containers cannot launch
Inspect the service journal and Docker information output. Look for cgroup errors, insufficient disk space, an incompatible image architecture, or a provider kernel restriction. Resolve the host condition before changing application settings.
A published port is unreachable
Verify that the container is running, that the application listens on the container interface rather than only loopback, that the port is published on the expected host address, and that both the VPS firewall and provider firewall allow the connection.
A bind mount returns permission errors
Check ownership and numeric user IDs inside the container. On SELinux systems, also check volume labels. Correct the host path and label policy instead of running the entire container as root by default.
Docker works on a derivative but support is unclear
Record the exact distribution release, Docker package source, kernel, and reproduction steps. If the system is outside Docker’s documented list, move production workloads to Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL, or CentOS Stream unless your organization has a tested support agreement for the derivative.
Final decision checklist
- Choose Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04 LTS for the default general-purpose VPS.
- Choose Debian 13 Trixie when a lean, conservative base is the priority.
- Choose RHEL 8, 9, or 10, or CentOS Stream 9 or 10, when Red Hat ecosystem requirements decide the host platform.
- Treat Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux as compatibility-driven choices that require your own validation because they are not listed on the Docker pages covered here.
- Install Docker Engine from Docker’s official repository for the matching distribution and release.
- Verify architecture, cgroups, storage capacity, firewall behavior, backups, and update procedures before moving production traffic.
- Recheck Docker’s live installation page and the distribution’s release page immediately before deployment.
For most readers, that process leads to Ubuntu LTS. Debian Stable is the credible minimalist alternative; RHEL and CentOS Stream are the policy-driven alternatives. The best OS is the supported release your team can patch, secure, monitor, and recover—not merely the one with the smallest base image.
