Yes—some Meta Quest games let you play without handheld controllers, but only when the individual game supports hand tracking. A headset that can track your hands does not make every VR game controller-free. This guide focuses on Meta Quest, explains how to check input and compatibility, and uses dated 2025 picks as starting points—not as a live price or availability list.
Can you play VR games without controllers?
On Meta Quest, “without controllers” generally means using the headset’s cameras to track your hands. Meta’s developer documentation describes hand tracking alongside controller input for immersive experiences. The platform also supports standalone VR, so native Quest play does not inherently require a PC, as described on Meta’s Quest platform page.
Hand tracking is a game-level input choice, not a universal headset setting that converts every title. A game built around controller buttons or sticks may still require controllers even if the headset can recognize your hands. Individual games may support hands, controllers, or both, and the supported input can vary by feature or interaction.
A concrete example: Jigsaw Night
In its December 23, 2025 roundup, UploadVR named Jigsaw Night its Best Hand Tracking Game. The article describes grabbing puzzle pieces nearby and at a distance; it also notes that a controller can be picked up for more precise distant grabbing. That is a useful model of mixed input: hand tracking can make direct interaction feel natural, while controllers may remain useful when precision matters.

UploadVR’s December 23, 2025 roundup highlighted these titles for hand tracking or mixed reality. Its selections are editorial recommendations from that date, not a definitive current ranking. They do not establish that every title is free, entirely controller-free, or compatible with every Quest generation.
| Game | What the 2025 coverage establishes | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Jigsaw Night | Named Best Hand Tracking Game; supports grabbing puzzle pieces with hands, with a controller available for more precise distant grabbing. | Current price, supported Quest models, and the complete set of supported input modes on its live store listing. |
| Demeo x D&D | Included among the hand-tracking or mixed-reality titles that caught the editors’ attention. | Whether hand tracking is supported in the mode you want, plus current price and Quest compatibility. |
| Dimensional Double Shift | Included among the hand-tracking or mixed-reality titles that caught the editors’ attention. | Current price, supported Quest models, and whether controllers are required for any parts of play. |
| Hidden Memories of the Gardens Between | Included among the hand-tracking or mixed-reality titles that caught the editors’ attention. | Current price, supported Quest models, and the input options listed by the store. |
| Banners & Bastions | Included among the hand-tracking or mixed-reality titles that caught the editors’ attention. | Current price, supported Quest models, and the input options listed by the store. |

| Laser Dance | Named Best Early Access Mixed Reality Game in the same roundup. | Its current early-access status, price, supported Quest models, and input requirements. |
The roundup identifies titles worth investigating, but it does not provide a verified current free-game catalog or a complete per-title compatibility and input matrix. Treat “mixed reality” as a description of the experience, not proof that a title is free or playable without controllers.

Paid Quest games: a historical best-seller list
On April 22, 2025, UploadVR reported that Meta had published an all-time best-selling paid Quest list. The first five entries were Beat Saber, Job Simulator, Superhot VR, Blade & Sorcery: Nomad, and The Thrill of the Fight. This is historical sales context—not a current quality ranking, a price comparison, or proof of present compatibility. UploadVR noted that free-to-play titles generally do not appear unless they had previously been paid.
Use the list to identify established paid titles to investigate, not as a substitute for checking whether a game fits your preferred input, play style, or headset. The cited ranking does not establish current prices, controller-free support, comfort needs, or supported Quest models for these games.

How to choose a paid or free Quest game
- Decide how you want to play. If you want to put the controllers down, look for explicit hand-tracking support in the game’s current store listing. If the listing only describes controller input, do not assume hand tracking will work.
- Check the price model. Confirm whether the title is paid, free-to-play, or available through a subscription, and check the price and access terms shown in your region. These can change; the 2025 examples above do not establish current offers.
- Confirm your exact headset model. Check the current listing for supported Quest generations before buying or downloading. Quest 3 and Quest 3S are examples of Quest headsets, but the cited coverage does not establish which specific games run on them.
- Match the game to your preferred play style. Puzzle, tabletop, action, and mixed-reality games can ask for different kinds of interaction. Read the title’s description and input notes to determine whether hands, controllers, or both are appropriate for the mode you plan to play.
- Review comfort and space information. Check the live listing and in-game guidance for movement style and play-area needs. The cited roundups do not provide a verified comfort or room-scale comparison across these titles.
What to check in the live listing
Before deciding that a game is free, controller-free, or compatible with your headset, verify the details for that title directly in the current Meta Quest store listing. Availability, regional pricing, promotions, subscription access, supported models, and input options can change as games are updated. If you already own a compatible Quest, native standalone play does not inherently require another PC purchase.
