There is no single best Palworld server host for every group. For the fastest setup, choose a managed provider after checking your players’ platforms, server location, slot count, backup and restore tools, mod policy, renewal price, and file access. If you are comfortable administering a machine, self-hosting gives you the most control and can be economical over a long period, but Pocketpair’s requirements are substantial: plan for four CPU cores, 16 GB of memory, a fast SSD, and an reachable UDP port.
The plan figures below are page snapshots reviewed on 13 October 2026, not independent performance tests. Currency, taxes, availability, renewal terms, locations, and game support can change, so confirm the final checkout details before paying.

Which Palworld hosting option is best for your group?
Start with the decision that affects everything else: do you want a provider to operate the server, or do you want to operate it yourself?
Choose managed hosting when convenience matters most
A managed game-server host supplies the machine, network connection, control panel, and routine maintenance. You normally select a location and player capacity, then configure the world through a web panel. This is the practical choice for a group that wants to play without learning SteamCMD, firewall rules, save-file handling, operating-system updates, or recovery procedures.

Managed hosting is not automatically better. A low advertised price may exclude the renewal rate, use a location far from your players, limit file access, or lack the crossplay and mod support your group needs. Treat each plan as a bundle of capacity, geography, controls, and support rather than buying on price alone.
Choose self-hosting when control and long-term flexibility matter
Self-hosting means providing the computer, storage, internet connection, port forwarding, security, backups, and administration. You can use a spare PC, a dedicated machine, or a Linux server and keep direct access to the files. It is attractive when you already own suitable hardware, need custom automation, or want to avoid a recurring hosting bill. The trade-off is that every outage, update, corrupted save, and network problem becomes your responsibility.

The following examples show what the reviewed provider pages displayed. They are not a ranking and do not establish that one provider performs better than another.
| Provider | Displayed plan examples | Advertised features | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shockbyte | Lamball: 6 GB, 10 players, $16.99 monthly Grizzbolt: 8 GB, 20 players, $21.99 monthly Jetragon: 10 GB, 32 players, $26.99 monthly |
Automatic updates, automatic backups, SFTP access, support, DDoS protection, and global locations | Amounts and features are provider page claims. No independent performance test was supplied. |
| Nitrado (UK page) | 12 slots: £12.74 per 30-day subscription 20 slots: £17.69 per 30-day subscription |
Crossplay, automated backups, and selectable locations | Prices are regional and volatile. The FAQ on the reviewed page says Palworld mod support is not offered on its servers. |
| GPORTAL | 10 slots: $15.99 per 30 days 32 slots: $32.68 per 30 days |
Private-server crossplay advertised for PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox; 50 GB of backup space | Plan details, locations, and prices can change. Confirm the exact platform combination and restoration workflow. |
These prices use different currencies and billing periods, so a direct “cheapest” claim would be misleading. A 30-day price is not necessarily the same as a monthly recurring price, and a displayed starting amount may not include tax or the renewal rate. Convert the total cost into the period you actually expect to play, then check checkout rather than relying on a promotional headline.
How to choose a managed plan
1. Count concurrent players, not everyone who owns the game
Use the largest number of people likely to be connected at once, then leave headroom for events or a second world. Slot limits are ceilings, not guarantees of smooth simulation. A plan that advertises more memory may still perform poorly if its CPU, storage, node load, or location is unsuitable. Ask what resources are dedicated or shared if the provider discloses that information; do not infer guaranteed performance from a slot count alone.
2. Put the server near the majority of players
Choose a data-center region that minimizes round-trip latency for the group. If players are spread across continents, place the server near the largest cluster or the person who hosts most sessions. A provider’s list of “global locations” does not tell you the latency your particular players will experience. Test the actual location where possible, and check whether you can move the server later without losing the world.

Crossplay is a configuration and platform-compatibility question, not just a marketing label. Nitrado’s page advertises crossplay, while GPORTAL’s page advertises private-server crossplay among PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox. Those statements do not prove that every current Palworld version or every combination will work indefinitely. Confirm the exact platforms, account requirements, game versions, and any server setting that must be enabled. Pocketpair’s configuration reference lists crossplay-related settings, but the behavior can change with the game build, so use the guide that matches your installed version.
4. Examine backups as a recovery feature
“Backups included” is not enough information. Check how often backups run, how many restore points are retained, whether you can download a copy, and whether restoration can be performed without opening a support ticket. GPORTAL advertises 50 GB of backup space; that figure describes storage capacity, not a guaranteed retention schedule. Automated backups are valuable only if you can identify a known-good restore point and recover it quickly.
5. Check file access and migration before you create a world
SFTP or another file-transfer method lets you download saves, inspect configuration, and move to another host. Shockbyte advertises SFTP access. If a provider offers only a panel with no downloadable files, ask how you would export the world before purchasing. A migration policy should explain where the save is stored, which files must be copied, and whether the provider will help with a transfer.
6. Read the mod policy
Mod support varies and can be decisive for a private community. The reviewed Nitrado FAQ explicitly says Palworld mod support is not offered on its servers. Do not assume that a generic mod manager, FTP access, or a panel setting makes a mod officially supported. Confirm which files may be changed, whether support will troubleshoot a modified installation, and how a mod update is rolled back.
7. Compare support, cancellation, and renewal terms
Look for support hours, ticket response expectations, cancellation timing, refund rules, and the price after the first term. A low introductory amount can become expensive at renewal. Save a copy of the order summary and the provider’s terms, especially when the plan is sold in a currency different from your own.
Is self-hosting Palworld worth it?
Self-hosting can be the best value when you already have suitable hardware and someone willing to maintain it. It is less attractive if you would need to buy a machine, upgrade memory, arrange reliable upload bandwidth, and spend time diagnosing crashes. Include electricity, backups, replacement parts, and your own maintenance time in the comparison with a managed subscription.

Official hardware and network requirements
Pocketpair’s version 0.5.0 server guide recommends at least four CPU cores and 16 GB of memory. It recommends more than 32 GB for larger servers. An 8 GB system may boot, but the guide warns that it has a greater possibility of out-of-memory crashes. These are requirements and recommendations from the game’s documentation, not a promise that a machine meeting them will sustain a particular player count.
The guide lists Windows 64-bit and Linux 64-bit deployment. The default server port is UDP 8211, and the port can be changed. You must allow the chosen UDP port through the operating system firewall and any router or cloud firewall between the server and the internet. If the port is not reachable, players outside your local network will not be able to connect even when the server process is running.
Recommended Free Tools
Use fast SSD storage. Pocketpair warns that low-performance storage may corrupt saved data, so storage speed and reliability are part of server safety, not merely load-time optimization. Keep a separate backup on another disk or machine; a second copy on the same failing drive is not a recovery plan.
Self-hosting installation paths
Windows or Linux through Steam
Pocketpair documents a dedicated-server installation through Steam. The general workflow is:
- Install a supported 64-bit Windows or Linux system and apply its security updates.
- Install Steam and use the Palworld dedicated-server entry in the Steam library, following Pocketpair’s current server guide for the applicable game version.
- Choose a dedicated data directory on the SSD and ensure the service account can read and write it.
- Start the server once to generate its files, then stop it before editing configuration.
- Allow UDP 8211, or the alternate port you selected, through the host firewall and router or cloud firewall.
- Set the world, password, player limit, crossplay options, and backup-related settings in the configuration files documented for your build.
- Start the server again and test a local connection, then test a connection from outside the network.
- Schedule operating-system updates and make verified copies of the save directory before changing the game or configuration.
Linux or Windows through SteamCMD
SteamCMD is useful for a headless machine because it can download and update the dedicated server without the full Steam desktop client. Pocketpair’s guide provides the Palworld app update command and the platform-specific deployment sequence. Use that command exactly as documented for the current guide version rather than copying an older command from a forum post. After installation, apply the same firewall, configuration, logging, and backup steps as a Steam installation.

Docker
Pocketpair publishes an official Docker image and sample Compose files. The Compose file is a sample to adapt and verify, not a universal production configuration. Set persistent storage for the server and save directories, expose the chosen UDP port, and test that a container restart does not erase the world. Docker Desktop on Windows and macOS is not recommended in Pocketpair’s documentation because limited disk read/write speeds can hurt server operation. A native Linux installation or a properly provisioned Linux host is the safer choice when storage performance is critical.

Configuration decisions that prevent common problems
Crossplay settings
Enable only the crossplay options required by your group and confirm that every player is on a compatible game version. If a console player cannot see the server, check the platform combination, the server’s crossplay setting, and whether the provider applies its own platform restrictions. A successful connection from one platform does not prove that all advertised platforms can join simultaneously.
Save backups
Set a backup schedule that matches how much progress your group can afford to lose. Before changing server settings, installing an update, or testing a mod, stop the server cleanly and copy the save. Keep at least one version outside the live server directory. Periodically perform a test restore on a separate instance so you know the backup is usable rather than merely present.
Configuration changes
Change one setting at a time, record the previous value, and restart the server when the guide requires it. Keep a plain-text change log with the date, game version, and reason for each change. This makes it possible to undo a setting that causes crashes or unexpected world behavior.

Player count is only one workload factor. Exploration, base complexity, automation, creature density, save frequency, and the number of simultaneous activities can all affect CPU, memory, and storage. Use the provider’s slot limit as a purchasing boundary, not as a performance benchmark. For self-hosting, begin with Pocketpair’s four-core and 16 GB recommendation, monitor memory and CPU during your busiest session, and add headroom before the machine starts swapping or crashing.
For a small private group, prioritize a nearby location, reliable backups, and a simple restore process over a high slot count. For a community that may grow, check whether the plan can be upgraded without changing the address or losing the save. For a technically capable administrator, a machine with more than 32 GB of memory can provide the headroom Pocketpair recommends for larger servers, but it still needs adequate CPU and fast storage.
Troubleshooting checklist
Nobody can connect
- Confirm that the server process is running and listening on the configured UDP port.
- Check the operating-system firewall, router port forwarding, and any cloud security group.
- Verify that players are using the correct address, port, password, and game version.
- Test from a network outside the server’s local network; a local test can succeed even when internet access is blocked.
The server crashes or restarts
- Check available memory first, especially on an 8 GB machine, where Pocketpair notes a greater risk of out-of-memory crashes.
- Review server logs around the failure and remove the most recent configuration or mod change.
- Confirm that the save directory is on a healthy SSD with sufficient free space.
- Restore the last known-good save only after preserving the current files for diagnosis.
Players lose progress or a save will not load
- Stop the server cleanly before copying or restoring save files.
- Use a dated backup from before the problem and verify that it belongs to the same world.
- Check storage health and write permissions; low-performance storage can corrupt saved data.
- After recovery, create a separate backup and test a normal shutdown and restart.
Crossplay does not work
- Confirm the exact platforms supported by the provider’s current policy, not just the word “crossplay.”
- Check the relevant crossplay setting in the configuration reference for your game build.
- Ensure every player has the same game update and that the server has restarted after configuration changes.
A practical buying checklist
Before ordering a managed server, record the answers to these questions:
- What is the total cost for the period you intend to play, including renewal, tax, and currency conversion?
- How many simultaneous players do you need, and what resources does the provider disclose behind that slot limit?
- Which exact data-center location is closest to the group?
- Can PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox players join the same private server under the current policy?
- How often are backups made, how long are they retained, and can you download and restore them yourself?
- Can you access and migrate the save files?
- Are mods supported, unsupported, or simply outside the provider’s support scope?
- What are the renewal, cancellation, refund, and support terms?
Before self-hosting, verify that you have a 64-bit Windows or Linux machine, four CPU cores, at least 16 GB of memory, fast SSD storage, reliable power and internet service, an open UDP port, a backup destination, and someone available to apply updates and respond to failures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBottom line
For most groups that want to start playing quickly, a managed plan with a nearby location, transparent renewal pricing, usable backups, file access, and confirmed platform support is the sensible choice. The displayed examples span 10 to 32 slots and use different currencies, so select by total cost and required features rather than by headline price. Self-hosting is the better fit when you already control suitable hardware and value configuration freedom enough to handle networking, updates, backups, and troubleshooting yourself. Whichever route you choose, verify the current Pocketpair requirements and the provider’s live terms immediately before deployment.
