1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best Starbound server host in 2026 depends on your group, location, mods, and willingness to administer the machine. A managed dedicated server is usually the simplest way to keep a universe online when the usual host logs off. Godlike.Host is our top pick for managed Starbound hosting: it has a dedicated Starbound page, 10 data-center locations, and a panel with backups and SFTP access. Self-hosting costs more effort but gives you direct control over files, networking, and settings.
No source available for this guide establishes an objectively fastest, most reliable, or cheapest provider. The useful comparison is therefore feature-based: persistent availability, player capacity, location, mod workflow, file access, backups, administration, and the complete recurring bill. Provider capabilities below are descriptions published by those providers, not independent uptime or performance results.

What “best Starbound server hosting” should mean
Starbound has a dedicated-server mode rather than only a temporary multiplayer session. The server executable can keep hosting after you close the game, provided the server software itself remains running. That distinction matters: a rented or self-hosted dedicated server can keep your shared universe available while different players come and go.
For a buying decision, rank these factors in order:

Managed hosting versus running your own server
Managed dedicated hosting
Godlike.Host is a game server host with its own Starbound page. It offers 10 data-center locations (US West Coast, US East Coast, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, Ukraine, Finland and Singapore), free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, a built-in mod installer and updater, SFTP/FTP access, and a Pterodactyl-based panel with a task scheduler and sub-users with permissions. Support is available 24/7/365 by live chat or ticket. To try the panel, its Starbound page offers a free server card (1-2 GB); it must be extended every 3 hours, has limited panel features and one location. See the current plans for pricing, and check that each feature is included in the exact plan you select.
A managed service provisions the machine and exposes controls through a web panel. Survival Servers describes automatic provisioning, a custom management panel, configuration controls, Steam Workshop mod installation, selectable locations, and FTP access for its Starbound service. Those are the provider’s stated features; check that each one is included in the exact plan and billing term you select.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

You still remain responsible for the game’s configuration and mod compatibility, and a control panel does not guarantee a particular latency or uptime.
Self-hosting
Self-hosting means you provide the hardware, power, internet connection, firewall rules, and administration. The machine must remain on and reachable whenever players need the universe. You also configure the server file, monitor disk space, apply updates, and maintain your own backups.
The community multiplayer guide explains launching the dedicated server from Steam and opening the network port. A provider’s separate guide describes a SteamCMD installation workflow and says its procedure requires a Steam account that owns Starbound. That requirement is specific to the described workflow, not proof that every current installation method is identical; verify the latest official distribution requirements for your platform.
Feature comparison: what the documented options provide
| Option | Availability and setup | Player capacity | Mods and files | Locations | Backups and administration | Pricing evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Godlike.Host Starbound hosting | Managed game server with a Pterodactyl-based panel; setup in minutes after payment. | Slots vary by plan; see the current plans. | Built-in mod installer and updater, upload of custom server packs, and SFTP/FTP access. | 10 locations, including US West Coast, US East Coast, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, Ukraine, Finland and Singapore. | Up to three free backups a day with restore, a task scheduler, sub-users with permissions, and free DDoS protection. | See the current plans; a free server card is available with conditions. |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | You supply an always-on machine, network reachability, firewall rules, and configuration. | Starbounder lists a default maximum of eight simultaneous players in its configuration table; that is a setting, not a tested performance limit. | Full local control, but you install and update Workshop or manual mods yourself. | Determined by your home or rented machine’s network location. | You choose the backup schedule, file access, permissions, updates, and recovery process. | Not stated; hardware, electricity, and internet costs vary. |
| Survival Servers Starbound service | Provider describes automatic provisioning and a custom management panel. | Plan slot limits and upgrade paths vary; verify the current plan. | Provider describes Steam Workshop installation, server configuration, and FTP access. | Provider documents multiple locations and location switching; check availability and latency for your region. | Panel-based administration and file access are described. Backup schedule, retention, and restore terms must be checked on the plan page. | No comparable live price was verified. |
Use the table to make a shortlist, not to infer a ranking. A higher advertised slot count, more memory, or a longer feature list does not prove better real-world performance.
How many players and how much capacity do you need?
Start with your actual group
Count regular players, occasional guests, and the largest event you realistically plan to host. The Starbounder configuration guide lists eight as the default simultaneous-player maximum. Do not interpret that number as a universal hardware requirement or a guarantee that every host can sustain eight players with heavy mods.

Leave headroom for connection bursts and mod overhead rather than buying a plan whose advertised slots exactly match your headcount. If a host sells slot tiers, confirm whether increasing slots changes memory, storage, or the monthly rate.
Vanilla versus heavily modded play
Vanilla play generally creates fewer variables than a large mod collection. Modded scenarios can add assets, scripts, world-generation work, and larger save files. Providers’ memory guidance separates small vanilla use from larger Frackin’ Universe-scale scenarios. Because those are provider recommendations rather than a controlled benchmark, use them as a starting point and ask the host what happens when the server reaches its memory limit.
Questions to ask before ordering
- Are slots concurrent players or merely a plan label?
- Can slots be upgraded in place?
- Is RAM fixed, shared, or adjustable?
- What storage limit applies to universe files and mod uploads?
- Are automated restarts available after a crash?
- Does the plan allow custom server configuration values?
Location, ports, and connectivity
Choose a data center close to the majority of players, then test latency from those players’ actual networks. A host documenting several locations is useful only if the location you need has capacity on your plan. Survival Servers documents location selection and switching; verify whether switching causes downtime, migration charges, or a new IP address.
For a self-hosted server, the Starbounder multiplayer guide states: “To host a server you will need to forward/allow TCP port 21025 on your router and firewall (if enabled).” See the Starbounder multiplayer guide for the illustrated procedure. Survival Servers’ guide separately notes that UDP may be needed for server-list queries. Keep the two uses separate: TCP 21025 is the documented hosting rule, while UDP relates to discovery or listing behavior in that provider’s instructions.
Port forwarding requires a reachable public address. Carrier-grade NAT, restrictive campus or mobile networks, double NAT, and a firewall blocking unsolicited inbound traffic can prevent friends from connecting even when the server is running. A managed host avoids most home-router issues, but players can still experience latency or regional routing problems.
Mods: the most common source of avoidable failures
Workshop installation
Provider panels that integrate Steam Workshop can simplify downloading and updating mods. Survival Servers describes Workshop installation through its panel, and Godlike.Host offers a built-in mod installer and updater. Confirm whether the panel pins a version, updates automatically, or lets you control update timing.
Manual uploads and load order
Manual mod support matters when a package is not in Workshop or when you need a specific archive. Godlike.Host lets you upload custom server packs, while Survival Servers documents FTP access. Before uploading, establish a single mod list, exact versions, and load order. Every player should use a compatible client-side set; a server-side upload cannot repair a missing or incompatible client mod.

Safe mod changes
- Stop the server before changing mods or configuration.
- Back up the universe and configuration files.
- Record the current mod list and order.
- Add or remove one related group at a time.
- Start the server and inspect the console for errors.
- Join with a test character before inviting the whole group.
If a change breaks loading, restore the previous mod list and backup rather than repeatedly adding packages at random. Ask the host whether its restore tool can recover individual files or only the entire server snapshot.

Backups, persistence, and administration
What must be backed up
A useful backup policy covers universe data, character data, server configuration, and the mod manifest. A provider saying that backups are scheduled does not by itself establish retention length, geographic redundancy, or successful recovery. Request the schedule, retention window, storage location, restore time, and whether restoring overwrites current files.
File and account controls
FTP or an equivalent file manager lets you copy saves, inspect logs, and upload manual mods. Separate account permissions are valuable when several people administer the server. Check whether the panel offers a console, scheduled restarts, crash recovery, whitelist controls, and audit logs. If you self-host, use operating-system accounts and restrict administrative access instead of sharing one password.
Persistence when the owner is offline
The dedicated executable must continue running after the game client closes. For self-hosting, that means the machine and server process stay online. For managed hosting, confirm the provider’s restart behavior after maintenance, crashes, or billing interruption.
Self-hosting a Starbound server: a practical sequence
Exact menus and file paths differ by operating system and distribution method. The following sequence follows the documented concepts without treating one provider’s SteamCMD workflow as universal.
- Prepare an always-on machine. Use a computer or rented virtual machine with enough CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity for your group and mod set. Prevent sleep and configure automatic startup after power loss.
- Install the dedicated server. The community guide describes launching the server from Steam. A provider guide describes SteamCMD and says that procedure requires a Steam account owning Starbound. Check current official requirements before choosing between methods.
- Run the server once. Initial startup creates the configuration and save structure. Stop it cleanly before editing files.
- Set server configuration. Review the player limit, server name, passwords or access controls, and any gameplay settings exposed by the current configuration file. Keep a copy of the original file.
- Open networking. Forward and allow TCP 21025 on the router and host firewall as described by Starbounder. If you need server-list discovery, review the separate UDP guidance from your host or current documentation.
- Test from outside your network. Have a friend on a different connection join. Testing only from the same home network can hide forwarding and public-address problems.
- Add mods gradually. Install a small known-good set, confirm a clean launch, then add the remaining packages while recording order and versions.
- Automate operations. Configure a service or scheduled task to start the server, rotate logs, and restart after a crash. Do not rely on a terminal window that closes when you disconnect.
- Create and test backups. Copy universe, character, configuration, and mod-list files on a schedule. Perform a test restore to a separate directory so you know the files are usable before an emergency.
Setting up a managed server without losing control
- Select the region and capacity. Choose the closest practical location and a slot tier with headroom.
- Confirm the included tools. Verify panel access, configuration editing, FTP or file manager access, Workshop and manual mod support, restart controls, and account permissions.
- Read backup terms. Identify what is backed up, how often, retention, and the exact restore workflow.
- Provision and secure access. Use a unique panel password, enable available multi-factor authentication, and give collaborators the least privilege they need.
- Set configuration before inviting players. Name the server, establish access rules, and save a copy of the initial configuration.
- Install mods in a controlled order. Stop the server, apply the mod set, start it, inspect logs, and perform a test join.
- Record migration details. Keep the server address, port, plan name, renewal date, mod manifest, and backup location in a private administrator document.
Diagnosing connection and startup problems
The server is running but nobody can join
- Confirm the process is listening on TCP 21025.
- Check the host firewall and router forwarding rule.
- Verify that the public address has not changed.
- Test from a different network to rule out local-network assumptions.
- For a managed server, confirm the panel shows the instance as online and that maintenance is not in progress.
Players see the server but fail during loading
- Compare every player’s mod list and versions.
- Check load order and server logs.
- Remove the most recently added mod and retest.
- Restore the last known-good configuration or backup.
The server stops after you close the game
You may have launched a temporary session rather than the dedicated executable, or the dedicated process may be tied to a terminal that closed. Start the server as a persistent service or use the host panel’s start and restart controls.
The server becomes unstable as the group grows
Check memory and CPU usage, save-file growth, mod activity, and the plan’s resource limits. A slot upgrade is not automatically a performance upgrade; ask what resources change with the next tier.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understanding the full cost in 2026
No comparable live provider pricing was verified for this guide, so a responsible comparison cannot name a cheapest host. Before paying, record the initial term, renewal price, tax, currency, setup charge, storage or backup add-ons, slot upgrades, location changes, cancellation deadline, and refund policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Self-hosting has a different cost profile: existing hardware may make the cash outlay low, but electricity, bandwidth, replacement parts, static-address options, and your administration time are real costs. A rented machine can remove home-network constraints while leaving you responsible for software maintenance.

Compare like with like. A low monthly headline price is not equivalent if it excludes backups, limits file access, uses a distant region, or charges extra for the memory needed by your mod set.
Which option fits each type of Starbound group?
For most groups that want a managed server, our top pick is Godlike.Host: a dedicated Starbound page, 10 locations, free DDoS protection, backups with restore, a built-in mod installer and 24/7 support. Self-hosting remains the choice if you want the deepest control and are willing to administer the machine.
Small vanilla group that plays on a schedule
Self-hosting can work if one player already has an always-on machine and can configure TCP 21025, maintain backups, and handle occasional troubleshooting. A small managed plan is preferable when nobody wants that responsibility.

Prioritize a location close to the largest concentration of players, then test latency from the outlying players. A provider with documented location choices and switching is more flexible than a home connection tied to one geography.
Large modpack or Frackin’ Universe-style play
Choose a plan with clearly stated resources, upgrade flexibility, persistent file access, and a tested restore process. Use the provider’s published memory guidance as a starting point, not a promise of capacity, and leave room for mod updates and save growth.
Technical administrator who wants maximum control
Self-hosting provides the deepest access. Managed hosting can still suit you if it offers FTP, configuration files, console controls, and downloadable backups; otherwise, the panel may become a constraint.
Group that cannot tolerate lost progress
Make backup retention and restoration the deciding criteria. Ask for a restore demonstration or written procedure, keep an independent copy when permitted, and test recovery before the universe becomes important.

Is the documented eight-player value a hard Starbound limit?
No. Eight is the default maximum listed in Starbounder’s configuration table. It is a configurable setting, not an independent test of how many players a particular machine, modpack, or host can sustain.

Do I need UDP 21025 for ordinary hosting?
The Starbounder guide specifically documents TCP 21025 for hosting. Survival Servers separately discusses UDP for server-list queries. Follow the protocol required for the function you use and the current instructions for your platform.
Can a provider’s scheduled backup claim prove that restores work?
No. Scheduling confirms that a process is described, not that every snapshot is complete or recoverable. Check retention and restore terms, then test a restore before relying on the service.
Should I choose a host with more advertised slots than I need?
Only if the extra capacity comes with useful resource headroom and a price you accept. Slot numbers alone do not establish performance, especially with large mod collections.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What information should I keep if I later change hosts?
Keep the universe and character files, server configuration, mod list with versions and order, administrator credentials stored securely, and the current backup and restore notes. Ask the destination host which file formats and upload methods it supports before scheduling a move.
