A reliable starting point is to cover several capabilities—damage, durability, spell utility, support, and exploration skills—without treating them as four rigid jobs. For a first playthrough, Fighter, Wizard, Cleric, and Rogue is a straightforward example: Lae’zel, Gale, Shadowheart, and Astarion. It is a template, not a proven optimum, and you can swap companions or adjust builds as your preferences change.
What makes a good Baldur’s Gate 3 party?
Think in terms of capabilities that your team can cover, not mandatory slots such as “tank, healer, and two damage dealers.” Characters can perform several jobs, and their contribution depends on build, equipment, level, encounter, and difficulty. Astarion, for example, can offer scouting, skill coverage, and damage; Gale can combine offensive magic with utility and support.
When choosing a lineup, consider whether it has a way to handle physical threats, access useful spells, support or recovery options, and deal with exploration challenges such as scouting and dialogue. These are practical considerations, not an official checklist or a guarantee of success.

- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
- Fighter — Lae’zel: a sturdy martial presence and a source of direct damage.
- Wizard — Gale: broad spell utility, including offensive and support options.
- Cleric — Shadowheart: support, healing, and utility magic.
- Rogue — Astarion: scouting, skill coverage, and damage.
The point is role coverage, not that these companions must keep their default classes or that every party needs a dedicated healer or tank. Choose companions whose stories you want to see; builds can be adapted if you find a gap in your capabilities.
Choose a team that complements your main character
Start with the class and playstyle you want for your own character, then pick companions who add capabilities you lack. A spell-focused main character may benefit from companions who bring physical durability or scouting. A martial-focused character might prefer allies with more spell utility and support. There is no requirement to duplicate the example lineup if it does not suit your character.

Adapt your party to difficulty and familiarity
Explorer and Balanced
Explorer is designed to make the campaign more forgiving; the community-maintained BG3 wiki says it increases party hit points and does not allow multiclassing. On this mode, prioritize a lineup you enjoy and can use comfortably. The wiki lists Explorer and Balanced among the game’s five difficulty modes: Explorer, Balanced, Tactician, Honour, and Custom.
Tactician and Honour
The community wiki describes Tactician as changing enemy hit points, behavior, and combat modifiers. Honour adds boss Legendary Actions and a single-save campaign structure. If reliability matters more to you than experimentation, a familiar and resilient lineup may feel preferable in these modes; that is practical advice based on the stated mode constraints, not a tested party ranking.

- Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
- Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
- Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
- Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.
The same community-maintained mechanics reference gives the total character level cap as 12 and says class levels advance separately when multiclassing. Because mechanics can be patch-sensitive, check the current game before relying on a specific build detail.

You do not have to settle on one active party for the whole campaign. Larian’s support FAQ says recruited companions who are not adventuring with you stay at camp and can be swapped in and out there. Camp also supports resting and recovery.

If a favorite companion’s current build does not fit your preferred lineup, respecs and hirelings offer flexibility. In Community Update #21, Larian described an early option to restart a character build and 12 hirelings, one for each class, who can also be respecced. These are ways to address perceived gaps, not reasons you have to change a companion’s class or use a hireling.
Is multiclassing necessary?
No. Multiclassing allows combinations of class abilities, but the available sources do not establish one universally optimal multiclass party. The community wiki says multiclassing is unavailable on Explorer, while Larian’s update presents it as a game feature rather than a requirement. If you are unfamiliar with the system, a single-class lineup is a perfectly reasonable starting point.
A September 27, 2023 PlayStation.Blog post with commentary from a Larian product manager reported Rogue/Ranger as the most popular multiclass combination at that time, followed by Barbarian/Fighter. That is historical popularity information from 2023—not a current usage ranking or evidence that either combination performs best.
Pick the party you will enjoy playing
Before committing to a lineup, check whether it suits your character, your preferred companions, and the way you want to approach combat and exploration. A party that looks balanced on paper may not feel right if you dislike its playstyle. Since companions can be exchanged at camp and builds can be adjusted, you can respond to the campaign rather than trying to predict every encounter in advance.
Quick Recap
- Start from your main character’s class and playstyle.
- Look for missing capabilities rather than demanding one character per rigid role.
- Consider how much build complexity you want, especially on a challenging mode.
- Keep companions whose stories matter to you and use build changes or hirelings if you want to address a gap.
