For a cross-genre shortlist of standout PC games from 2000 through 2005, start with Half-Life 2, Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Deus Ex, Age of Mythology, and Dungeon Siege. This is an editorial selection, not a definitive or exhaustive ranking: “best” can mean strong review reception, lasting influence, or simply the right kind of game for you.

How to read this list

“Early 2000s” has no universally fixed cutoff. This article uses 2000–2005 inclusive, a span that captures the five examples below. The choices reflect three different considerations: critical reception, historical influence on PC gaming, and variety in genre and play style. Those measures do not always align. A high position in a review ranking does not prove a game’s historical importance or guarantee that you will enjoy it.

The shortlist is a sourced sample, not a verified best game for every year or a complete account of the era. The games are presented as starting points for different tastes rather than as a single objective hierarchy.

Five PC games to consider

Half-Life 2 (2004): physics-driven action

Half-Life 2 is the clearest pick if you want a highly acclaimed action game with environmental problem-solving. Metacritic’s PC ranking, filtered to 2000–2005, places it at the top of the displayed results and identifies it as Metacritic’s 2004 PC Game of the Year. PC Gamer’s 2023 retrospective highlights its physics-led environments and argues that the game helped establish Steam as a major PC platform. Its review standing and its influence on PC distribution are distinct reasons for its place here—not proof that it is the right choice for every player. Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000): a substantial fantasy RPG

For a classic party-based role-playing game, Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn is one of the strongest candidates in the period. Metacritic’s PC page lists its release date as September 24, 2000, places it among the highest displayed results under the 2000–2005 filter, and describes it as a continuation of the first Baldur’s Gate in the Forgotten Realms setting. Deus Ex (2000): flexible problem-solving

Deus Ex suits players who want room to approach obstacles in different ways. PC Gamer’s retrospective describes a mix of shooting, stealth, and conversational problem-solving, and treats it as a systems-driven immersive sim. Its appeal is less about following one prescribed tactic than experimenting with the tools and options the game gives you. PC Gamer’s retrospective on influential PC games.

Age of Mythology: strategy shaped by myth

If you prefer managing a civilization to controlling a single adventurer, Age of Mythology offers a different kind of play. In a February 2002 portfolio announcement, Microsoft described it as a real-time strategy game built around civilizations, resource gathering and trade, gods, heroes, and mythological creatures. That announcement documents the game’s planned design; it is not being used here to establish an exact release date. Microsoft’s February 2002 portfolio announcement.

Dungeon Siege: an action-RPG party in a continuous world

Dungeon Siege provides an action-RPG alternative to the more traditional role-playing approach represented by Baldur’s Gate II. Microsoft’s 2002 announcement described a continuous 3D fantasy world and a party that could grow to eight characters. Those details capture what Microsoft announced at the time; the announcement’s projected store date should not be treated as a verified release date. What “best” means—and what it cannot settle

Review aggregation, historical importance, and present-day playability are separate questions. Metacritic’s ranking is useful evidence of review reception, but it is not a measure of lasting influence or personal fit. PC Gamer’s influential-games feature makes the distinction explicit: a game can matter historically even if it is no longer fun or easy to play today. Likewise, PC Gamer’s case for Half-Life 2 as a contributor to Steam’s growth is a historical argument, not a review score. PC Gamer on influential PC games; PC Gamer on Half-Life 2.

These five games cover role-playing, immersive simulation, action-RPG, and strategy play, but they do not represent every important genre, year, or player preference between 2000 and 2005. Use the list to find a promising direction, not as a claim that other games from the period are less worthy.

Checking whether a classic is playable today

The sources cited here establish historical context and, in some cases, review standing; they do not establish current store availability, supported platforms, regional catalogs, edition differences, or compatibility with a particular computer. Before buying or installing any of these games, check the current listing from a legitimate storefront or publisher and confirm that its platform and edition match your setup. A historical mention or ranking is not evidence that a specific edition is currently available.
