There is no single PC VR preset that works for every headset, game, and computer. Start by choosing a refresh rate your system can sustain, then use frame-time diagnostics to identify missed frames before lowering render resolution or demanding game settings. Smooth delivery may remove one possible contributor to discomfort, but no setting can guarantee that you will avoid motion sickness.
What is a good refresh rate and resolution to aim for in VR?
Choose a refresh rate supported by both your headset and the game, then prioritize consistent frame delivery over the highest available setting. At a higher refresh rate, the PC has less time to produce each frame. Meta Horizon OS Developers gives these frame budgets: 72 Hz allows 13.9 ms per frame, 90 Hz 11.1 ms, and 120 Hz 8.3 ms. These figures describe rendering time, not a refresh-rate threshold proven to prevent motion sickness.
Meta says, “A higher refresh rate enables higher frame rates, brighter output, and improved color clarity,” while also cautioning that the app must do its work in a shorter time. Its published 207 Hz and 240 Hz examples are specific to Quest 3; rates above 207 Hz use display scaling, and 240 Hz lowers rendered resolution. They are not general PC VR targets. See Meta’s Set Display Refresh Rates, updated August 27, 2026.
For resolution, begin with the runtime’s ordinary setting rather than copying a multiplier from another headset or game. Meta’s Oculus Debug Tool, for example, offers a pixels-per-display-pixel override and an adaptive GPU performance scale, but resolution controls and how they interact with a game vary by runtime and application. Reduce resolution only when diagnostics point to missed frames or the game remains too demanding.

How to tune PC VR settings in a safe order
- Check supported refresh rates. Use the rate options available for your headset and runtime. Choose a sustainable rate; do not raise it simply because a menu permits it. A game-specific Steam announcement recommends consistent 90 Hz as a baseline for that game and lowering graphics if it cannot be sustained. That is not a universal target or a proven anti-nausea threshold. Read the Steam announcement.
- Start with default render resolution and game settings. Load the scene where you notice stutter. If diagnostics show missed frames, lower one demanding setting at a time—first a costly in-game graphics option or render resolution—then check the same scene again. Changing a single layer makes it easier to tell what helped.
- Watch frame timing while playing. In SteamVR, open Settings > Performance and use the Advanced Frame Timing graph to look for spikes. Valve notes that spikes commonly indicate CPU performance trouble. Meta users can use the Oculus Debug Tool’s performance HUD and frame-drop diagnostics. A wobble or apparent movement is not automatically low FPS: tracking problems can also cause drift. See Valve’s SteamVR performance guidance and Meta’s Oculus Debug Tool documentation.
- Test reprojection or motion smoothing only if available. These runtime features can be useful fallbacks, but their behavior and visual artifacts vary. Meta documents PC Asynchronous Spacewarp modes; Windows Mixed Reality describes motion reprojection for SteamVR operating with the game at half the display rate in the described configuration. Reprojection does not make missed native frames disappear, and one mode is not best for every headset and game. Compare the result in your own setup. See Meta’s Asynchronous Spacewarp documentation and Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality guidance for SteamVR.
- Stop if symptoms occur. If you feel nausea, dizziness, motion sickness, or eyestrain, discontinue play rather than pushing through. Valve Steam Support advises: “If you or any of your family experience these symptoms, please discontinue use and test the issue at a later time.” It also says playing in smaller increments may be beneficial. This is gameplay support guidance, not a clinical protocol. See Valve’s guidance on nausea or motion sickness during gameplay.
How to tell whether the bottleneck is resolution, frame rate, or tracking
Use the timing graph or runtime HUD during the scene that actually stutters; a menu or a different game may not reproduce the workload. Look for frame-time spikes and dropped-frame indicators, then change one setting and repeat the same test. If lowering resolution or a demanding graphics setting improves delivery, keep the change only if the added smoothness is worth the clarity trade-off.
If the image seems to drift or move even when frame delivery looks steady, investigate tracking rather than assuming graphics settings are the cause. Frame timing can reveal workload problems, but it does not diagnose every source of visual instability.

How to compare two VR configurations
When deciding between settings, compare the same game and scene on four points:
- Consistency: Does frame timing stay steady, or are frames being missed?
- Clarity: How much image detail is retained at the chosen render resolution?
- Compatibility: Is the refresh rate supported by both the headset and application?
- Reprojection: If enabled, are its artifacts or perceived motion preferable to the missed-frame behavior without it?
The best balance depends on the PC, headset, runtime, and game. There is no established refresh rate, resolution multiplier, or reprojection mode that prevents motion sickness for everyone.
