The best choice depends on what “permadeath” means to you: losing an individual character, deleting an entire survival save, or repeating an action-focused run without the sources establishing that either of those harsher losses applies. Darkest Dungeon and The Long Dark’s Survival Mode offer two clearly documented forms of lasting loss; Hades is a strong neighboring pick for challenging repeat runs, but its official FAQ does not establish equivalent permadeath rules.
Which permadeath game fits the way you want to play?
| Game | What the cited source establishes about death | Play style | When the rule applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darkest Dungeon | Character permadeath (Nintendo listing). | Turn-based gothic roguelike RPG and party management. | The Nintendo Switch listing identifies character permadeath; the cited sources do not establish platform-wide rules. |
| The Long Dark | In Survival Mode, death deletes the save (Steam listing). | Solo exploration and survival in a frozen wilderness. | Survival Mode only; WINTERMUTE does not feature permadeath, according to the same listing. |
| Hades | The cited FAQ describes a rogue-like dungeon crawler and challenge options; it does not establish that death permanently removes a character or deletes a save. | Action-focused repeated runs. | Hell Mode and the late-game Pact of Punishment are identified by the developer as challenge systems. |
Darkest Dungeon: permanent losses in a turn-based party RPG
Darkest Dungeon suits players who want tactical decisions to carry consequences for individual characters. Nintendo’s Switch store listing explicitly includes “character permadeath” among its classic CRPG and roguelike features. Red Hook Studios describes the game as a challenging gothic roguelike turn-based RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring. Together, those descriptions make it a fitting choice for players who want roster-focused, turn-based play and lasting character losses.
The cited confirmation of permadeath is specifically Nintendo’s Switch listing. It does not establish the precise roster rules or confirm that the same rule works identically on every platform or edition. Nintendo’s Darkest Dungeon listing and Red Hook Studios’ game page provide the available details.
The Long Dark: Survival Mode puts the whole save at risk
Choose The Long Dark if you want wilderness survival where one death can end the current save. Its Steam listing describes a solo exploration-survival experience in a frozen wilderness, then states of Survival Mode: “When you die in Survival, your save is deleted. Every decision matters.” This is a save-level consequence, not merely the loss of one character.

That rule is mode-specific. The same listing says: “Unlike Survival Mode, WINTERMUTE does not feature permadeath.” Check that you are selecting Survival Mode if save deletion is the consequence you want; do not assume the rule carries over to the story mode. See The Long Dark on Steam for the mode descriptions.
Hades: challenging repeated runs, not a verified permadeath pick
Hades belongs on a shortlist for players drawn to action-focused runs and escalating challenges, but with a qualification: Supergiant’s FAQ calls it a “rogue-like dungeon crawler” and identifies Hell Mode and the late-game Pact of Punishment. The cited FAQ does not explain all consequences of death or establish permanent character loss or save deletion. Treat it as a neighboring roguelike recommendation, not as a confirmed equivalent to the permadeath rules in the two games above. See Supergiant Games’ Hades FAQ.

How to choose the right kind of risk
- Choose character-level loss: Darkest Dungeon is the documented fit if you want turn-based party decisions and permanent loss of individual characters.
- Choose save-level loss: Pick The Long Dark’s Survival Mode if you want death to delete the current survival save.
- Choose action-focused repeat runs: Consider Hades for its rogue-like structure and challenge systems, without assuming its death rules match classic permadeath.
These sources do not establish exact run lengths or how long recovery from a failed attempt takes. If the amount of time at stake matters, consult current gameplay details for the specific platform and mode before committing to a run.
