Best PlayStation Vita Racing Games: Which One Should You Play?

Choose a PS Vita racer by the kind of driving you want: anti-gravity combat, open-world street racing, or compact RC-scale tracks.

For futuristic anti-gravity combat, start with WipEout 2048; for open-world street racing, choose Need for Speed: Most Wanted; and for compact remote-control racing, try MotorStorm RC. Those three offer the clearest range of racing styles on Vita. There is no single objective all-time winner: the best fit depends on the kind of racing you want, and historical reviews are not a measure of current online-service or store availability.

Best PS Vita racing games by style

Game Best for What sets it apart
WipEout 2048 Anti-gravity combat racing Futuristic high-speed racing, combat, and documented front/rear touch and motion-control options.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted Open-world street racing A street-racing choice whose Vita review highlighted friend tracking and a Most Wanted list built around a player’s friends.
MotorStorm RC Short-form, remote-control-scale racing A deliberately small-scale take on racing, distinct from full-size cars and tracks.

Which game fits your racing style?

WipEout 2048: best for anti-gravity combat

WipEout 2048 is the clearest pick if you want futuristic craft, combat, and demanding track racing rather than conventional road cars. In a November 8, 2011 PlayStation.Blog interview, assistant producer Michael Pulst described the series as intense and said, “We’ve made the tracks a little bit wider.” The interview also describes front and rear touchscreen and motion-control features. These are launch-era feature descriptions, not a guide to current multiplayer functionality. Read the PlayStation.Blog interview.

Those touch and motion options are alternatives, not a requirement to play that way: TheSixthAxis’ contemporary coverage favored buttons for purists. The outlet named WipEout 2048 its 2012 Racing Game of the Year, a useful period accolade rather than a definitive ranking for every player today. See TheSixthAxis’ 2012 award.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted: best for open-world street racing

Choose Need for Speed: Most Wanted if you would rather race through an open-world street setting than compete on anti-gravity circuits. PlayStation LifeStyle’s November 2012 Vita review described friend tracking and a Most Wanted list using the player’s friends list, and judged it the best racing title available to Vita owners at that time. That is the reviewer’s period assessment, not a current consensus ranking. UKIE’s 2012 console report also includes the title in its PlayStation Vita games material. #1 Best Overall
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed PlayStation Vita
  • This is no ordinary race. Each character is equipped with their own unique vehicle that can transform into a car, boat and plane to take advantage of the changing terrains.
  • Take to land, sea & air as you race through 16 dynamically changing courses inspired by SEGA's illustrious gaming history.
  • Race as one of the 20+ legendary All-Stars. The starting line-up has been transformed as new iconic characters from the world of SEGA join the race.
  • Utilize an arsenal of devastating weapons which require skill to aim, shoot, evade and block.

MotorStorm RC: best for compact sessions and RC-scale racing

MotorStorm RC shrinks the racing premise to remote-control-scale vehicles and tracks, making it the distinctive choice if full-size racing is not what you are after. PlayStation LifeStyle reviewed the PS3 and Vita versions on March 6, 2012, describing it as a small-scale racer and one of Vita’s best budget games at the price then. That value judgment is historical; it does not establish today’s price or availability. TheSixthAxis called it a close runner-up to WipEout 2048 in its 2012 racing-game vote. Read the PlayStation LifeStyle review; see TheSixthAxis’ award coverage.

What about Ridge Racer and other racers?

Ridge Racer is an arcade-drifting alternative that appeared in contemporary comparisons with WipEout 2048. A contemporary critic-review collection records complaints about its framerate, limited content, recycled tracks, DLC-focused model, and online dependence. Those are reviewers’ criticisms, not a universal verdict, but they are worth weighing if you want substantial content in the base game. View the critic-review collection.

Rank #2
Need for Speed Most Wanted - PlayStation Vita

  • Non-Stop Multiplayer - Pick a car, hook up with friends and jump into a non-stop playlist of tight, competitive events. No lobby screens means the action never stops. Score big, rank up and earn endless rewards and upgrades. Keep the fierce rivalries going between events with endless opportunities to race, battle and explore in a huge open world
  • Beat Your Friends - Autolog 2 ratchets up the intense competition with personalized race recommendations and feeds broadcasting all of your most newsworthy scores, speeds and times to your friends. Earn Need for Speed points at all times on any system as you try to outdrive your friends and become the Most Wanted
  • Racing Without Rules - It’s survival of the fastest as "Need for Speed Most Wanted" fuses the franchise’s, authentic "real car" feel with the intense speed and aggression of Burnout. Power down, slide out, and battle your way past cops and rivals using pure driving skill, and heavy doses of nitrous
  • Vita Exclusive Features - Navigate and play Vita specific events and challenges with fully enabled front and rear touch pads. Use the front camera to take your autolog profile picture or the built in microphone to chat with friends online

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a possible kart-racing alternative, but the available platform-specific evidence does not support ranking it alongside the three recommendations here. This guide therefore treats it as a lead to verify, not a confidently rated pick.

How to choose before you buy

  • Pick by racing feel: anti-gravity combat points to WipEout 2048, open-world streets to Need for Speed: Most Wanted, and miniature RC-scale tracks to MotorStorm RC. Ridge Racer is the arcade-drifting option, with the content and technical criticisms noted above.
  • Think about controls: WipEout 2048 documents touch and motion options, while contemporary coverage also recommends buttons for players who prefer traditional controls.
  • Separate historical multiplayer from current access: Sony’s launch-era interview described Vita–PS3 multiplayer for WipEout 2048. That does not establish that the feature or any other network service still works now. Check current service status before buying specifically for online play.
  • Check physical listings carefully: confirm the listing is for the Vita edition, note its region and language, and verify whether both the game card and case are included. Current stock, prices, and listing quality are not established here.

What “best of all time” can—and cannot—mean

The evidence supports a style-based shortlist, not a measured ranking of every racing game released for Vita. The strongest documented recommendations are three games with different formats, while contemporary review judgments and awards reflect the period in which they were published. Store access, physical inventory, prices, and network features can change, so historical coverage should not be read as a promise of present-day availability.
