The best melee build in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered depends on whether you want to fight behind a shield, focus on two-handed weapons, or go unarmed. There is no official ranking of builds or published damage comparison; as a mechanics-based starting point, specialize in one weapon skill, add Block and an armor skill, and invest in Strength and Endurance. For a balanced first character, try a one-handed weapon with a shield, Block, and Heavy Armor.
Best melee builds for Oblivion Remastered at a glance
| Build | Weapon skill | Defense | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shield fighter | Blade or Blunt | Block and Heavy Armor | A flexible starting path with a weapon and shield |
| Two-handed specialist | Blade or Blunt | Choose an armor skill; no shield in the original game’s manual description | A focused weapon-first identity |
| Unarmed fighter | Hand-to-Hand | Add Block and an armor skill to round out defense | A distinct challenge built around unarmed combat |
These are recommendations inferred from documented skills and attributes, not tested rankings. Bethesda lists Blade, Blunt, Hand-to-Hand, Block, and Heavy Armor among the game’s skills in its Oblivion Remastered leveling and skills guide. Its beginner guide quotes Senior Environment Artist Megan Sawyer: “You’ll pick a different class or a different birthsign, but more importantly, you’re going to pick a different path.” Treat the builds below as starting paths, not mandatory templates.
How to choose a melee weapon path
One-handed shield fighter: the balanced starting choice
Choose Blade for swords and daggers, or Blunt for maces, axes, and hammers, then pair that weapon skill with Block and Heavy Armor. This gives your character a clear offensive focus while retaining a defensive skill and armor specialization. The original game’s manual describes shields as more effective for blocking than weapons and presents blocking followed by a counterattack as a combat rhythm. That is useful historical context, but it is not confirmation that every detail works identically in Remastered.
Two-handed specialist: focus on weapon offense
Choose Blade or Blunt and build around a single weapon family. The original Oblivion manual identifies battleaxes, claymores, and warhammers as two-handed weapons that cannot be paired with a shield. Because that description comes from the original game, check the current Remastered behavior rather than treating the old manual as definitive. Invest in an armor skill to support your defense without making a second weapon family the center of the build.

Hand-to-Hand: a distinct unarmed route
Hand-to-Hand is a documented combat skill in Remastered, so an unarmed specialist is a valid character concept. The available official sources do not establish that unarmed combat matches armed builds for damage or overall effectiveness. Choose it for the unarmed play style, not because a numerical comparison proves it is strongest.
Which attributes should a melee character raise?
Bethesda says Strength determines melee damage and carry capacity, making it the direct offensive attribute for a melee character. Endurance affects health and recovery from fatigue, so it is a reasonable companion investment for a character expected to take hits and keep fighting. Neither attribute alone makes a build universally best; your weapon choice, defense, and combat difficulty also shape the experience.

How leveling affects a melee build
Bethesda’s Remastered leveling guide says each level-up provides 12 Virtue Points. You can allocate up to five points to one attribute and increase up to three attributes at that level-up. The game also scales enemies with character level, and Bethesda advises mixing combat, magic, and stealth skills to avoid becoming too weak relative to enemies.
For a melee-focused character, keep combat ability advancing along with character level. Avoid rapidly gaining levels through noncombat skills while leaving your weapon and defensive skills behind. Remastered uses a redesigned leveling system inspired by both Oblivion and Skyrim, so original-game efficient-leveling advice should not be transferred wholesale; see Bethesda’s Remastered overview.

Adjust combat difficulty if the build feels wrong
A build’s feel depends partly on the combat balance you choose. In Update 1.2, dated July 16, 2025, Bethesda added separate Player Combat Damage and Enemy Combat Damage settings, each with six choices: Novice, Apprentice, Adept, Journeyman, Expert, and Master. If a melee setup feels too punishing or too easy, adjust those settings rather than assuming the weapon path itself is the problem. The update announcement documents the settings for the game’s platforms at that time: Oblivion Remastered Update 1.2 notes.

Bethesda says Remastered recreates combat animations and adds sound effects, visual effects, and hit reactions, while also redesigning the leveling system. Those confirmed changes do not establish that every tactical detail in the original game’s manual remains unchanged. The manual says weapon damage depends on the weapon, skill, and condition, and armor protection depends on the armor, relevant skill, and condition. It also describes repair hammers and the Armorer skill for restoring equipment. Treat those as original-game context rather than Remastered-specific instructions; the official sources cited here do not establish a current repair-tool recommendation for Remastered.
