Best Pokémon Games for Shiny Hunting, Ranked (Switch)

Legends: Arceus leads this Switch-focused ranking, but the best shiny-hunting game depends on your target and preferred hunt loop.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the best all-around Pokémon game for shiny hunting on Nintendo Switch, thanks to visible wild spawns and a rewarding outbreak loop. Scarlet and Violet are close behind for their flexible open-area hunts, while Let’s Go, Sword and Shield, and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl suit more specific hunting styles. This is an editorial ranking of Switch games, not every Pokémon generation; the best pick for you depends on your target and whether you prefer scanning spawns, catching chains, or raid-style runs.

How these games are ranked

This ranking weighs more than the lowest quoted odds. It considers how easy encounters are to check, how many checks a method supports, how much setup it requires, which targets are available, and whether the hunt loop fits the player. A high nominal rate is not a guarantee of a shiny after a fixed number of attempts, and a method with faster checks can feel more practical than a better rate with substantial waiting or repetition.

All odds below are estimates published by the fan-maintained PokeTools shiny calculator, not official Nintendo or Pokémon Company statistics. They depend on the specific method and bonuses named; they do not predict how long a hunt will take. The compared games are listed in Nintendo’s current Pokémon game catalog.

1. Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Why it ranks first

Legends: Arceus offers the strongest general-purpose loop for players who like to spot Pokémon in the field. You can scan visible spawns and pursue mass outbreaks, making it easier to see what is appearing than in games built around hidden random encounters. Outbreaks also give a hunt a clear focus.

#1 Best Overall
Pokémon™ Legends: Z-A - Nintendo Switch
  • Live the life of a Pokémon Trainer in the streets of Lumiose City!
  • For the first time in the Pokémon RPG series, command your Pokémon in real-time battles
  • Use the power of Mega Evolution in battle and take on rampaging Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon
  • Compete in the Z-A Royale each night to test your skills and try to become the strongest Pokémon Trainer
  • Visit shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free—all centered around Prism Tower

PokeTools estimates odds of about 1/128.5 for a mass-outbreak encounter when perfect research and the Shiny Charm are combined. That is the calculator’s maximum modeled setup, not the rate for every outbreak or an ordinary early-game encounter. Its estimated base rate for Legends: Arceus is about 1/4,096.

Best for

Choose it if you want visible field hunts, outbreak targets, and a consistent rhythm of checking spawns. Research progression and the Shiny Charm affect the setup, and the strongest outbreak estimate does not apply to every target or encounter.

  • Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale

2. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Why it ranks second

Scarlet and Violet combine open-area spawns with outbreaks and sandwich effects, offering several ways to focus a hunt. PokeTools estimates about 1/512.4 per check for its listed maximum stack: a level 3 sandwich, 60 outbreak knockouts, and the Shiny Charm. That figure describes the stated bonuses, not a promised hunt duration.

Trade-off and best for

These games suit players who want flexible spawn checks and target-specific setup. Their visual confirmation is less forgiving than in Legends: Arceus: a GamesRadar comparison notes that Scarlet and Violet lack the sparkle and audio cues described for Legends: Arceus. Subtle color differences can therefore be easier to miss.

3. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!

Why it ranks third

Wild Pokémon appear in the overworld, and catch combos create a simple, repeatable hunt loop. PokeTools estimates about 1/273.5 at a combo of 31 or more with a lure and the Shiny Charm. The estimate is specific to that setup.

Best for

Pick Let’s Go if you enjoy watching encounters appear and do not mind repeatedly catching Pokémon to build a chain. The loop can become repetitive, and the games’ available Pokémon and mechanics differ from later entries, so this is a strong fit for its particular style rather than a universal choice for every target.

4. Pokémon Sword and Shield

Why it ranks fourth

The Crown Tundra expansion adds Dynamax Adventures, a distinct raid-like way to check Pokémon. Nintendo’s official Dynamax Adventures page describes the feature. PokeTools estimates a 1/300 chance per Pokémon caught at the end of an Adventure, or 1/100 with the Shiny Charm. Those are method-specific estimates, not the chance of receiving a shiny legendary from each individual raid encounter.

Trade-off and best for

Choose Sword and Shield if you like multi-battle runs, cooperative play, and the targets available through Dynamax Adventures. The method requires the relevant expansion content; check the current edition and online requirements for the play setup you intend to use.

5. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Why it ranks fifth

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl offer worthwhile hunts for players with a particular Sinnoh target in mind. The official game guide covers Pokédex completion, postgame areas, and legendary encounters. PokeTools describes Poké Radar chains as a separate patch-chance method and says the Shiny Charm does not boost those patch odds; treat that mechanics detail as a fan-calculator explanation rather than an official guide.

Best for

These remakes make the most sense if you specifically want a Sinnoh hunt, a Poké Radar chain, or a postgame legendary target. Their lower placement reflects their narrower fit for a general recommendation, not a claim that they are worse for every individual hunt.

Which game should you choose?

  • For visible field hunts and outbreaks: Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
  • For flexible open-area hunts and sandwich setup: Pokémon Scarlet or Violet.
  • For a focused capture-chain loop: Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee!.
  • For raid-like cooperative hunts: Pokémon Sword or Shield with the Crown Tundra expansion.
  • For a specific Sinnoh target or Poké Radar chain: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl.

If you already have a target in mind, check that it appears in your chosen game and that the method you want applies to it. A method’s headline odds are only useful when the target is eligible and you enjoy the checks required to pursue it.
