Dockge is the best Portainer alternative for most single-host Docker Compose users in 2026. It keeps each stack as an ordinary compose.yaml file and concentrates on the jobs a homelab operator performs every day. Choose Komodo instead when Git-backed releases and several Docker servers are the priority. Keep Portainer when you need the broadest environment support and team administration. Coolify and Yacht are useful, but they solve adjacent problems rather than replacing every Portainer workflow.
Quick verdict: which Portainer alternative should you choose?
There is no reliable benchmark showing that one of these dashboards is universally fastest or lightest. The practical difference is where each product believes the truth of your deployment lives and how much infrastructure it is designed to control.

| Tool | Best fit | Source of truth | Scope | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dockge | One or a few Docker hosts running Compose | Compose files on the host filesystem | Docker Compose stacks | Intentionally does not provide a broad Kubernetes, Swarm or fleet-management layer |
| Komodo | Git-backed deployments across multiple servers | Git repositories and orchestrator configuration | Multi-server Docker operations and fleet workflows | More concepts to learn than a focused Compose editor |
| Portainer CE/BE | Mixed environments, many connection types or team controls | Platform-managed state, with optional Git workflows | Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman and Azure ACI environments | Broader scope can feel heavier than a Compose-only tool |
| Coolify | Deploying applications from Git, Dockerfiles, Compose or images | Application and deployment configuration | Self-hosted application platform | Not a like-for-like infrastructure dashboard |
| Yacht | Template catalogs and one-click installation | Templates and container configuration | Convenience-oriented Docker management | Less suited to deep fleet governance |
For a gaming homelab, that usually means Dockge for a small server running game servers, databases and monitoring; Komodo when those services are spread across a home server, rented VPS and backup host; and Portainer when you also administer Kubernetes, Swarm, Podman or a team’s shared registry.
What makes an alternative genuinely different from Portainer?
A Docker UI is an administrative control plane, not merely a prettier version of docker ps. It can start and stop containers, change networks, expose volumes and deploy code. Selecting one therefore changes your operating model.

Source of truth
Dockge treats the Compose file on disk as the central artifact. You can edit that file with a normal editor, keep it in your existing backup system and inspect the same configuration over SSH. Komodo puts Git-backed deployment at the center, so a commit and the orchestrator’s deployment workflow become the authoritative path. Portainer can manage resources through its interface while also supporting Git-oriented workflows. Coolify manages application deployments, and Yacht emphasizes reusable templates.
Scope
Dockge is deliberately narrow: its own comparison describes it as managing “Docker Compose stacks and nothing else.” That focus removes unrelated menus and makes the product easier to understand, but it also means you should not expect it to become a Kubernetes console. Komodo is broader in operational reach because it coordinates several Docker servers. Portainer covers the widest range of environment types.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Operating model
- Administration dashboard: Portainer is designed to inspect and control many kinds of container environments.
- Compose workspace: Dockge is optimized for files, stack lifecycle and local readability.
- GitOps-oriented orchestrator: Komodo connects repository changes with deployments across a server fleet.
- Application platform: Coolify packages source-to-running-service delivery.
- Template catalog: Yacht prioritizes discoverable, repeatable installations.
Dockge: the best focused alternative for Compose homelabs
Choose Dockge when your deployments are already Compose projects and you want the UI to stay out of the way. Its defining promise is not a larger feature list; it is that the stack remains a normal file you can read, copy and version like any other infrastructure artifact.
Why Dockge works well
- Filesystem-first workflow: each stack remains a plain
compose.yamlfile on the drive. - Small conceptual surface: the interface concentrates on Compose stack operations rather than unrelated orchestrators.
- Easy recovery: a damaged UI does not erase the deployment definition; you still have the Compose file and Docker data.
- Good fit for a few hosts: it is most natural when you administer one server or a small number of independently managed machines.
Trade-offs to accept
Dockge is not intended to be a general control plane for Kubernetes, Swarm, Podman or a large organization. It also does not turn a collection of servers into a coordinated release fleet. If you need role-based access, centralized registry administration or support-oriented business controls, Portainer’s broader product model is a better match.
Use Dockge for a gaming server when
You keep a Compose project for each game or service bundle, want to edit environment variables beside the stack definition and occasionally update images by hand. Store the files in a private Git repository or a protected backup location even though Dockge itself reads them from the host. That gives you a reviewable history without changing Dockge’s file-oriented workflow.

Komodo: the strongest choice for Git-backed multi-server Docker
Komodo is the alternative to evaluate when “deploy the same change to several machines” matters more than having the smallest possible UI. Current comparisons describe a core/periphery architecture: a central core coordinates operations while periphery components allow work to occur on managed servers.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11What Komodo adds
- Git-centered releases: repository state can drive deployment instead of relying on ad-hoc edits in a web form.
- Fleet workflows: several Docker hosts can be managed as a coordinated estate rather than isolated dashboards.
- Separation of control and execution: the core/periphery model gives you a place to manage policy and a component on each server that performs work.
The cost of that power
Komodo has a steeper learning curve than Dockge because you must understand repositories, deployment definitions, server registration and the relationship between the core and periphery. That complexity is justified when repeatability and auditability are requirements; it is unnecessary overhead for a single Compose host that you update a few times each month.
Use Komodo for a gaming fleet when
Run a central control service and register the servers that host your game instances, databases or monitoring stack. Put each deployment definition in Git, establish which branch or revision is deployable, and make a routine for reviewing changes before they reach production. Keep emergency SSH access and a tested rollback path; orchestration should reduce risk, not remove your ability to recover from a bad image or configuration.
Portainer remains the right answer in several cases
An alternative is not automatically an upgrade. Portainer Community Edition (CE) is described by Portainer as its foundation, while Business Edition adds business-oriented controls. Official documentation describes both editions as managing Docker and other environments.
Choose Portainer for breadth
Portainer covers Docker Standalone, Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman and Azure ACI scenarios. For Docker Standalone connections, its documented methods include an agent, API, socket and Edge Agent. That range matters when your homelab includes more than one orchestration technology or when you expect your infrastructure to evolve.

Choose Portainer for team administration
Business Edition is positioned around controls such as role-based access control and registry management, along with support. Those features are relevant when several people operate the same environment and “who can change what” is as important as whether a container starts.
When Portainer feels excessive
If every workload is an ordinary Compose project on one machine, a broad dashboard can add navigation and policy decisions you do not need. In that case, Dockge’s narrow scope may make routine edits clearer, while Komodo is more appropriate only if you are moving toward Git-driven fleet operations.
Coolify: an application platform, not a direct dashboard replacement
Coolify is best understood as a self-hosted application platform. It is designed to deploy services from Git repositories, Compose files, Dockerfiles or existing images. That makes it attractive for developers who want a path from source code to a running service with application-oriented configuration.
Pick Coolify when
- You deploy web applications or APIs from source repositories.
- You want application environments rather than a raw inventory of containers.
- Your team thinks in builds, releases, domains and services instead of individual Docker commands.
Do not choose it solely for container inspection
If your primary task is to inspect a mature collection of Compose stacks, Coolify’s application-platform model may feel indirect. It solves delivery and hosting concerns that Dockge and Portainer expose more directly. Decide whether you need a developer platform or an infrastructure dashboard before you install it.

Where Yacht fits
Use it as a convenience layer for repeatable starter deployments, demonstrations or a household server where discoverability matters more than centralized policy. Templates can also help less experienced operators understand the environment variables and ports a service expects.
Where Yacht does not fit
Template-driven installation is not the same as Git-backed change control or multi-server governance. For a growing fleet, Komodo provides a more deliberate orchestration model. For mixed orchestrators and team permissions, Portainer remains the broader choice.
Decision guide by real-world scenario
| Your situation | Recommended starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One home server with several Compose projects | Dockge | Files stay visible on disk and the interface stays focused. |
| Two to several Docker hosts with deployments in Git | Komodo | Its core/periphery and Git-oriented workflows are designed for fleet operations. |
| Docker plus Kubernetes, Swarm or Podman | Portainer | It supports the widest documented set of environment types. |
| A team needs roles and registry administration | Portainer Business Edition | Those business controls are part of its stated positioning. |
| Deploying applications from source repositories | Coolify | It is an application delivery platform rather than only a container dashboard. |
| Installing services from a catalog | Yacht | Templates and one-click setup are its central advantage. |
| You want a free, simple Portainer substitute and are unsure | Dockge first | It offers the clearest low-complexity path when your workloads are Compose-only. |
How to evaluate an alternative before moving production stacks
Do not begin by importing every container. Prove that the candidate preserves your source of truth, permissions and recovery process with a small non-critical stack.
- Inventory the current host. Record Docker version, Compose projects, bind mounts, named volumes, networks, published ports, image registries and backup locations. Include game-server save paths; those are usually more valuable than the container itself.
- Classify each workload. Mark it as Compose-managed, a standalone container, a Swarm service, a Kubernetes workload or an external dependency. Dockge cannot replace a tool simply by displaying an object it was not designed to manage.
- Choose the authority. Decide whether the canonical copy is a file on disk, a Git repository or platform-managed configuration. Do not allow operators to edit the same stack in several places without documenting which copy wins.
- Install the candidate on a test host. Keep the existing management path available until you have verified start, stop, update, rollback and restore operations.
- Import one disposable Compose project. Prefer a service whose data can be recreated. Confirm that environment variables, secrets, volumes, networks, health checks and restart policies behave as expected.
- Test a failed update. Use a deliberately reversible image change or a maintenance window. Verify that you can return to the prior image and configuration without deleting persistent data.
- Test a backup restore. Restore both the Compose or Git definition and the application data. A dashboard backup that omits game saves, databases or uploaded files is not a complete recovery plan.
- Document the handoff. Write down the URL, authentication method, host connections, backup schedule, update procedure and emergency CLI or SSH path before migrating more services.
Deployment and connection prerequisites
Every option ultimately depends on a functioning Docker installation and correctly protected host access. Portainer’s official Docker Standalone instructions specifically require a working Docker installation and sudo, root or Administrator access. The same administrative reality applies to any UI that can control containers.
Prepare the host
- Patch the operating system and Docker engine before exposing a new management interface.
- Give persistent data its own documented paths or named volumes.
- Confirm that the operator account can perform the required Docker actions without sharing a root password.
- Keep an out-of-band recovery route, such as local console or SSH, in case the UI or its network fails.
- Back up Compose files, Git repositories, secrets and application data separately.
Choose the connection method deliberately
When using Portainer with Docker Standalone, the documented choices are agent, API, socket and Edge Agent. A local socket is convenient but powerful: anyone who gains equivalent access can generally control the host. An agent or Edge Agent can help with remote topology, but it still needs authentication, network restrictions and updates. Select the least exposed method that meets your layout, rather than opening a management endpoint to the public internet by default.

Security checklist for every Docker management UI
Treat these products as administrative consoles. A compromised dashboard can create containers, mount host paths, read secrets and alter network exposure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Put the interface behind HTTPS and a private network, VPN or access gateway where practical.
- Use unique administrator credentials and enable multi-factor authentication if the selected edition supports it.
- Limit inbound access by source network and avoid forwarding a raw Docker socket beyond the trusted host boundary.
- Separate personal game-server accounts from the account that administers Docker.
- Grant teammates the smallest role they need; do not share one all-powerful login.
- Rotate API keys, agent tokens and registry credentials after staff or host changes.
- Review published ports, host bind mounts and privileged settings before applying a template or Compose update.
- Log deployments and retain enough history to identify who changed a stack and which image or Git revision was used.
- Keep the management UI and its base images updated, but schedule updates so you can verify compatibility with your Docker engine.
Migrating from Portainer without losing control
Migration is primarily a configuration and ownership exercise, not a container-copy operation. Containers can usually be recreated; persistent data and a clear definition of the desired state are what must survive.
- Export the facts, not just screenshots. Capture image references, environment variables, mounts, networks, restart policies, labels, port mappings and scheduled jobs for each stack.
- Locate persistent data. Map every named volume and bind mount to a backup and restore procedure. Include databases and game saves separately from ephemeral cache data.
- Reconstruct Compose definitions. For Dockge, make the Compose file on disk the authoritative artifact. For Komodo, place the deployment definition in the designated Git repository and decide how revisions are promoted.
- Recreate networks and secrets carefully. A service may start while still being broken if an external network, secret or DNS record is missing.
- Cut over one service at a time. Stop the old deployment, verify data integrity, start the new definition and test client connectivity before proceeding.
- Retain the old access path temporarily. Do not uninstall Portainer until monitoring, backups, rollback and emergency access work through the replacement.
Common failure modes and fixes
The UI shows a stack, but edits do not persist
This usually indicates that the interface and your expected source of truth are different. Check whether the stack is controlled by a file, Git revision or platform state. With Dockge, verify that the file path is the one you back up and edit; with Komodo, verify that the deployment points to the intended repository and revision.
A remote host connects, then disappears
Check agent or Edge Agent reachability, firewall rules, DNS, certificate validity and token rotation. Confirm that the remote Docker daemon is running and that the account used by the connector still has the required privileges.
A recreated container cannot see its old data
Compare the old and new volume names, bind-mount paths, user IDs and filesystem permissions. Recreating a container does not recreate data automatically, and a typo in a host path can produce an empty directory that looks like a successful deployment.
An update breaks a game server
Pin a known-good image tag or digest when the application supports it, retain the previous definition and restore the backed-up save directory. Test upgrades on a non-production instance before applying them to the server your community uses.
The replacement is harder to operate than Portainer
That is a valid result. A narrower tool is only better when its operating model matches your work. Return to Portainer if you need its environment coverage, connection options or team controls, rather than forcing a Compose-only interface to manage workloads outside its design.
Bottom line for 2026
Start with Dockge if your Docker world is mostly Compose files on one or a few hosts. Move to Komodo when Git-backed deployment and multi-server orchestration become the dominant problem. Stay with Portainer when breadth, mixed environments or team governance matter more than minimalism. Choose Coolify for application delivery from source, and Yacht for template-led installations. The right alternative is the one whose source of truth, scope and security model match how you actually run your servers.
