To let ETS2 or ATS clients discover Convoy sessions larger than eight players, close the game, open the correct config.cfg, change uset g_max_convoy_size "8" to uset g_max_convoy_size "128", save, and restart. A dedicated server may also need the same value in config_ds.cfg. This 128-player route comes from version-1.50-era guidance and is not a guarantee that every game or server build accepts 128 players.

Quick answer: change the client setting first
ETS2 and ATS keep the client-side Convoy visibility limit in a file named config.cfg. The change is local to each player, so every person who needs to see larger sessions should make it in their own game installation.

Save the file only after the game has been closed, then start the game again. If you are running a dedicated server, edit its config_ds.cfg as well; the server-side change is separate from the setting in an individual player’s config.cfg.
What each player-limit setting controls
g_max_convoy_size in a player’s config.cfg
This is the setting that controls which larger Convoy sessions the client can see. It belongs to the game installation for the individual player, not to a shared server account. Changing it does not automatically alter anyone else’s computer.

g_max_convoy_size in config_ds.cfg
A dedicated server has its own configuration file, commonly named config_ds.cfg. The dedicated-server procedure discussed for sessions above eight players sets uset g_max_convoy_size "128" there too. This value is independent of the copy in each player’s game directory.
max_players in server_config.sii
The dedicated server’s server_config.sii contains a separate session player-count field named max_players. The SCS Modding Wiki’s published example still shows max_players: 8 and identifies it as the session maximum. That example is important: changing a client value to 128 does not prove that the installed dedicated-server build will accept a 128-player session.

Before editing either game
- Decide whether you are changing a player-hosted Convoy, a dedicated server, or both. They use different files.
- Exit ETS2 or ATS completely before opening the configuration file. A running game can write its own settings when it closes.
- Use the folder for the game you actually launch. ETS2 and ATS do not share the same
config.cfg. - Make a backup copy of the file before changing it. If the result is not accepted by your build, restoring the original line returns the prior setting.
- Keep the installed game and dedicated-server build in mind. The 128-player instructions are associated with 1.50-era guidance, while the published server example still documents eight players.
Raise the limit for a player-hosted Convoy
A player-hosted Convoy uses the host’s game session, but clients still need an appropriate local visibility setting to discover sessions above eight players. Apply the following procedure on every player’s computer that must find the larger session.
ETS2
- Close Euro Truck Simulator 2.
- Open
Documents/Euro Truck Simulator 2/config.cfg. - Search for the exact line
uset g_max_convoy_size "8". - Change only the number so the line reads
uset g_max_convoy_size "128". Keep the setting name, quotation marks, and spacing intact. - Save
config.cfg. - Restart ETS2 and look for the Convoy session again.
ATS
- Close American Truck Simulator.
- Open
Documents/American Truck Simulator/config.cfg. - Find
uset g_max_convoy_size "8". - Replace it with
uset g_max_convoy_size "128". - Save the file and restart ATS.
The edit changes the client-side discovery ceiling; it does not create additional server capacity by itself. The host’s build and the session’s server-side settings still determine whether a 128-player Convoy can actually be created.
Configure a dedicated ETS2 or ATS server
Dedicated servers are useful when a Convoy should remain available without a player keeping the host game open. SCS Software described this benefit when it announced dedicated-server support in 2022: “One of the biggest advantages of hosting a dedicated server is that your session will always be running, even without any players online.” The tools were announced for both ETS2 and ATS.

Set the dedicated-server Convoy value
- Stop the dedicated-server process cleanly.
- Open the server’s
config_ds.cfgin its dedicated-server configuration directory. - Find the
g_max_convoy_sizeentry. If it is set to eight, changeuset g_max_convoy_size "8"touset g_max_convoy_size "128". - Save the file before starting the server again.
- Start the dedicated server and verify the value after startup.
Check the session maximum in server_config.sii
Inspect the dedicated server’s server_config.sii too. Its max_players field is the server session player-count field. If it remains max_players: 8, the server may still advertise or enforce an eight-player session even though g_max_convoy_size is 128.
Do not assume that changing both files guarantees 128 slots. The SCS Modding Wiki example still uses eight, and the result varies with the installed build and launch method. If your build does not accept the larger value, use the maximum supported by that build rather than repeatedly forcing an unsupported number.
Confirm that the server kept the edit
An SCS forum troubleshooting thread documents a failure mode in which the dedicated server regenerates or overwrites its configuration. After every restart, reopen config_ds.cfg and confirm that the intended value is still present. If it has returned to eight, stop the server, edit the file again, and check which startup process is writing the file. A value that looks correct before launch but changes immediately afterward has not been applied to the running server.

How players join a larger Convoy
- Each player who needs to discover the session edits the correct local
config.cfgand restarts ETS2 or ATS. - The host or dedicated server must be running a compatible build and must have a session limit that permits the intended size.
- Search for the Convoy from the restarted game client.
- If the session is missing, verify the client’s
g_max_convoy_sizefirst, then verify the dedicated server’sconfig_ds.cfgandserver_config.sii. - If the server appears but will not admit the planned number of players, treat the installed build’s supported maximum as authoritative; the 128 value is not a promise of unlimited capacity.
Player-hosted Convoy or dedicated server?

A dedicated server solves availability, not compatibility. It is the better fit when the session should be present while the regular host is away, but it still requires matching client settings and a build that supports the intended player count.

The file keeps returning to eight
First make sure the game or dedicated-server process is stopped while you edit. For a dedicated server, inspect config_ds.cfg after startup; regeneration or an overwrite can restore the old value. Edit the file only after shutting the process down, restart it, and check the file again.
The server is running, but some players cannot see it
Those players probably have not raised g_max_convoy_size in their own game-specific config.cfg. The dedicated server’s setting cannot edit a remote player’s local file. Have each affected player change the value and restart the relevant game.

The client setting is 128, but the server still behaves as if it has eight slots
Check server_config.sii and its max_players field. The SCS Modding Wiki example lists max_players: 8, so a server-side eight-player value can remain the limiting setting. Also account for the installed game/server build: the 128-player guidance is version-dependent.
There is no g_max_convoy_size line
Confirm that you opened the correct game’s file and that you are looking in the game’s Documents folder rather than in the dedicated-server directory. ETS2 uses Documents/Euro Truck Simulator 2/config.cfg; ATS uses Documents/American Truck Simulator/config.cfg. If the setting is absent from the file generated by your build, do not invent a different name; check that build’s supported configuration format before proceeding.
A value of 128 is rejected or has no effect
That outcome indicates a compatibility limit rather than a spelling problem in the line. SCS’s published dedicated-server example still documents eight players, and the effective result depends on the installed build and launch method. Restore the last value known to work, then use the maximum your particular build supports.
Why the limit changed over time
Convoy launched with an eight-player limit in the 1.41 era. SCS Software said at that time that the limit could increase as the mode matured. SCS later added dedicated-server support and made the tools available for both games. The 128-player client instruction belongs to 1.50-era ETS2/ATS guidance, while the continuing eight-player example in the Modding Wiki is why current results must be verified against the build you have installed.
