| LinuxGSM | Linux administrators running one or several traditional servers | Command line | SteamCMD installation and updates, start/stop/restart, console, validation, debugging, logs, full-server backup, monitoring and cron automation | It is CLI-first; administrators must be comfortable with Linux services, files and scheduled jobs |
| PZ Server Manager | Windows administrators who want a focused desktop GUI | Windows app | Separate profiles, settings, mods, worlds, Workshop workflows, sandbox presets, console actions, profile duplication and world wipes | It is Windows-focused rather than a multi-node hosting control plane |
| Pterodactyl | Operators already running a browser panel, Docker containers and multiple nodes | Web panel with browser console and SFTP | User and server administration, resource limits, isolation, backups, file access and node-level operations | Project Zomboid support depends on a maintained community egg and branch compatibility |
LinuxGSM’s own description calls it “the command-line tool for quick, simple deployment and management of Linux dedicated game servers.” For Project Zomboid, its documented workflow is the strongest all-round Linux choice: SteamCMD handles the dedicated-server installation and updates, while LinuxGSM supplies lifecycle, diagnostics, backup and monitoring functions. The Project Zomboid Steam application ID used by that integration is 380870. See the LinuxGSM Project Zomboid documentation.

PZ Server Manager is the most convenient fit when the administrator’s priority is changing game configuration without hand-editing files. Its README describes a Windows application for running Project Zomboid dedicated servers “without editing ini files by hand.” Profiles can keep their own settings, mods and worlds, so a test profile can be isolated from a live community profile. See the PZ Server Manager README.
Pterodactyl should be selected for infrastructure reasons, not because it has the deepest Project Zomboid-specific wizard. Its panel manages users, nodes and servers, while Wings runs game servers in Docker containers. That model is powerful for teams and hosting operations, but you must validate the egg, image and branch support before committing a live world. Read the introduction and architecture documentation.
How to choose a manager
Choose by operating system first
- Linux: LinuxGSM is the natural starting point when you want a documented, scriptable server rather than a desktop window.
- Windows: PZ Server Manager is designed around a graphical workflow and keeps common Project Zomboid operations visible.
- Existing panel infrastructure: Pterodactyl makes sense when your organization already maintains the panel, Wings nodes, Docker images, users and permissions.
Do not treat a web panel as automatically superior to a native manager. A panel adds a service layer, authentication, node networking and container images. That is valuable at scale, but unnecessary complexity for one administrator on one machine.
Match the tool to your scale
A single private server usually benefits from the fewest moving parts. LinuxGSM or PZ Server Manager can install the game and expose the actions an administrator performs every week. Multiple communities, staff accounts or physical nodes change the calculation: browser access, per-server permissions, resource ceilings and standardized container deployment become more important, which is where Pterodactyl’s architecture helps.
Separate configuration depth from convenience
Project Zomboid administration has at least four distinct jobs: installing the dedicated server, changing gameplay settings, managing Workshop content and maintaining worlds. A tool may be excellent at one and weak at another. LinuxGSM is strongest for lifecycle automation and operations. PZ Server Manager is strongest for profile-level gameplay configuration. Pterodactyl is strongest for infrastructure controls and isolation, provided the game egg exposes the controls you need.

LinuxGSM: the best documented Linux-native option
What it provides
The Project Zomboid integration uses Valve’s SteamCMD to install and update the dedicated server. LinuxGSM documents start, stop and restart actions, an interactive console, validation, debug output, log access, full-server backup and process/query monitoring. It also supports cron jobs, allowing recurring monitor and update tasks instead of relying on a person to remember them. The complete feature and platform guidance is in the Project Zomboid server page.
The recommended minimum distributions listed by LinuxGSM are Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Debian 11 and Enterprise Linux 8. “Minimum recommended” is not the same as a guarantee for every derivative distribution: use one of those families when you want the documented baseline and keep the operating system patched.

- Prepare the host. Install a supported Linux distribution, create a dedicated account for the game service, apply updates and open only the network ports your players need.
- Install through LinuxGSM and SteamCMD. The integration targets Project Zomboid’s Steam application ID 380870, so the game files are obtained and maintained through the normal SteamCMD path rather than a manually copied server directory.
- Start and verify. Use LinuxGSM’s start action, connect from a test client, and inspect the console and logs for startup errors before inviting players.
- Schedule maintenance. Add cron jobs for monitoring and, if your update policy permits it, recurring update tasks. Schedule updates during a maintenance window so a restart cannot interrupt an active session unexpectedly.
- Back up before risky changes. Run the full-server backup function before changing mods, switching branches or editing server configuration.
The exact command syntax and service-user choices depend on your host layout, so follow the current commands shown on LinuxGSM’s Project Zomboid page rather than copying an old tutorial. The important operational distinction is that LinuxGSM gives you named lifecycle and diagnostic actions; it does not try to hide Linux from the administrator.
Why LinuxGSM suits production administration
- Repeatability: SteamCMD installation and update handling can be repeated on another Linux host without recreating a desktop setup.
- Automation: Cron-based monitor and update tasks support unattended routine work.
- Diagnostics: Console, logs, debug and validation functions give you several ways to distinguish a bad install from a configuration or mod problem.
- Recovery: A full-server backup is available as an explicit operation before maintenance.
- Low overhead: There is no separate web panel, database or container scheduler to maintain.
Where LinuxGSM is less convenient
LinuxGSM does not turn every Project Zomboid setting into a form. Administrators who frequently tune sandbox values, switch large mod collections or maintain many isolated test worlds will still work with the game’s configuration files and directory structure. That is manageable for experienced Linux users, but it is less approachable than a profile-oriented GUI.
It is also possible to automate the wrong thing. An update cron job that runs during peak play can restart a server at the worst time, and a monitoring job that blindly restarts a process can conceal a repeatable crash. Define a maintenance window, keep backups, and review logs after automated actions.

PZ Server Manager: the focused Windows GUI
Profiles keep experiments separate
PZ Server Manager supports as many profiles as needed. Each profile can have separate settings, mods and worlds, which lets you keep a production community apart from a staging instance or a temporary event configuration. Profile duplication is useful when you want a controlled copy of a known-good setup before making changes.
This profile model is the central reason to choose the tool: you can reason about a server as a named environment instead of remembering which collection of files belongs to which world. The capabilities and labels below come from the project’s README.
Installation and lifecycle controls
The manager can install and update the dedicated server through SteamCMD. Its start, stop and restart controls are visible in the app, and a console view lets you observe or interact with the running server without opening a separate terminal workflow. For a Windows administrator who wants a direct answer to “which profile is running?” this is simpler than maintaining several hand-built shortcuts.
Workshop and mod management
Workshop mod search, import and export are built into the workflow. Use a profile’s mod list as the source of truth, then export it when you need to document or reproduce the setup. Before applying a large collection to a live world, duplicate the profile and test the complete load sequence; a mod can be enabled successfully yet still fail when its dependencies, map order or game branch do not match.
Sandbox presets and advanced file access
The documented presets include Apocalypse, Outbreak, Extinction and Rising. The manager also supports both B41 and B42, giving administrators a visible way to select the branch they intend to run. When a preset is not enough, the app exposes raw INI editing and _SandboxVars.lua editing. Keep a backup or duplicate profile before changing raw values: a syntax mistake can prevent a server from starting even when the GUI itself remains available.

World wipes without rebuilding the profile
The world-wipe operation removes the existing world while retaining the profile’s settings and mods. That is useful for a seasonal reset or a failed map experiment because you do not have to reconstruct the configuration from memory. Treat a wipe as destructive: stop the server, confirm the profile name and backup the world data before accepting the action. Retaining settings and mods does not preserve player progress or the deleted world.
Networking defaults
The README lists default external UDP ports of 16261 for the game and 16262 for direct connect. Both can be changed per profile. If you host multiple profiles on one machine, assign non-overlapping ports, allow the selected values through the Windows firewall and router, and give players the matching address and port. A server that appears healthy locally but cannot be joined from outside is usually a port-forwarding, firewall or address problem rather than a mod problem.
Strengths and boundaries
- Strengths: Windows-native GUI, profile isolation, integrated Workshop actions, named sandbox presets, raw-file escape hatches, profile duplication and world maintenance.
- Boundaries: The workflow is centered on a Windows desktop rather than a browser-accessible multi-node fleet. The README documents the application’s features, not a hosted control plane with organization-wide permissions or container resource quotas.
Pterodactyl: infrastructure control with a Project Zomboid caveat
How the platform is built
Pterodactyl’s official documentation describes it as an open-source game-server management panel built with PHP, React and Go. Its architecture has two parts: the Panel is the website where administrators manage users, nodes and servers, while Wings runs on each node and launches game servers in Docker containers. See the project overview and how-it-works architecture page.
That design supplies browser consoles, SFTP file access, backups, resource limits and Docker isolation. It is particularly useful when several people need controlled access, when servers must be spread across nodes, or when one noisy instance must not consume an entire host.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPanel and node networking
The architecture documentation identifies default panel/node ports of 443 and 8080, with 2022 used for SFTP. These are management-plane defaults, not substitutes for the Project Zomboid game and direct-connect ports. Confirm the final bindings in your deployment, terminate HTTPS correctly, and keep management services separate from the public game traffic policy.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The Project Zomboid support question
The official shipped-game examples do not include Project Zomboid. To run it, an operator must select or maintain a community egg that defines the Docker image, startup command, environment variables, install procedure and file locations. Verify all of the following before migrating a live world:
- The egg’s install script obtains the intended Project Zomboid branch and server files.
- The Docker image supports the required Java/runtime and SteamCMD behavior.
- Startup variables expose the settings, mods and world paths you need.
- Console output, backups and SFTP access work with the egg’s directory layout.
- The egg is actively maintained for the Project Zomboid branch you plan to run.
A panel can make an unsupported or stale egg look polished while still failing at installation or updates. Treat community-egg maintenance as a prerequisite, not an implementation detail.
When Pterodactyl is the right choice
Choose Pterodactyl when the panel itself solves a real operational problem: multiple nodes, staff accounts, browser-based access, standardized backups, per-server CPU or memory limits, or container isolation. If you only need one Windows server with easy sandbox editing, its extra layers are unlikely to compensate for the missing first-party Project Zomboid template.

Practical administration playbooks
Set up a first server safely
- Choose the manager from the host. Use LinuxGSM on a supported Linux distribution, PZ Server Manager on Windows, or Pterodactyl only if you already operate its panel and have verified a suitable egg.
- Reserve an identity for the server. Give the instance a clear profile or service name, decide where saves and backups live, and document who can administer it.
- Install before customizing. Complete the SteamCMD or egg installation, start an unmodified instance, and confirm that a local test client can connect.
- Record the working baseline. Save the manager version, game branch, profile name, selected ports and initial configuration before adding Workshop content.
- Add changes one class at a time. Apply sandbox settings, then a small mod set, then larger collections. Restart and test after each meaningful change.
Add or change mods without losing a known-good setup
- Stop the server cleanly and create a full backup or duplicate profile.
- Change the mod list in the manager appropriate to your platform: PZ Server Manager’s Workshop tools, Linux file/configuration workflow, or the Pterodactyl egg’s exposed files.
- Check dependencies, map order and branch compatibility before starting.
- Start the server and watch the console and logs for missing items or load errors.
- Connect with a test account before reopening the server to the whole community.
Never assume that a successful download proves a mod is safe for an existing save. Maps and gameplay systems can alter world behavior, while removing a mod can leave objects or items that the save no longer understands.
Change sandbox settings
Use a GUI preset when it expresses the intended rule set; use raw INI or _SandboxVars.lua editing only when you need a value the preset does not expose. On LinuxGSM, make the file change during a stopped-server maintenance window and keep the previous file in the backup. In Pterodactyl, confirm that the egg maps the setting to the correct file rather than silently overwriting it from an environment variable on restart.
Perform a world reset
- Announce downtime and stop the server.
- Back up the complete server, including the current world and configuration.
- Confirm whether the goal is a full wipe, a profile clone or a new profile; these have different recovery paths.
- For PZ Server Manager, use the documented world-wipe action when you want to retain that profile’s settings and mods.
- For LinuxGSM or Pterodactyl, archive the world directories before deleting or replacing them, then start a fresh world and test generation.
- Keep the archive until players have confirmed that the new world is usable.
Plan updates and restarts
LinuxGSM’s cron support makes recurring monitoring and update tasks possible, but schedule them outside active play and pair them with backups. In a GUI workflow, perform updates manually during a published maintenance window. In Pterodactyl, check what the egg’s install and startup scripts do before enabling an automated task; a container image can change behavior independently of the panel.
Common failure modes and fixes
Players cannot connect
- Confirm the server process is running and inspect its console or logs.
- Test locally from the host or LAN to separate game configuration from Internet reachability.
- Check the selected UDP game and direct-connect ports, firewall rules, router forwarding and the address given to players.
- For multiple profiles, verify that every instance has unique port assignments.
The server stops after a mod change
- Restore the last known-good backup or duplicate profile.
- Remove the newest mod or dependency group, then restart.
- Use validation and debug output on LinuxGSM, the profile console on Windows, or container logs in Pterodactyl.
- Add content back in small groups until the incompatible item is identified.
An update produces unexpected behavior
- Check which Project Zomboid branch the manager or egg installed.
- Confirm that the client and server branches match.
- Read startup and update logs before changing configuration.
- Restore the pre-update backup if the world or mod set is not compatible, then plan a controlled migration.
Pterodactyl installs but does not start Project Zomboid
Inspect the community egg’s install script, image, startup command, environment variables and file paths. If any of those components target a different branch or runtime, the panel can still show a server object while the game process fails. Replace the egg with a maintained, compatible one or use LinuxGSM/PZ Server Manager for this instance.
Decision guide
Pick LinuxGSM if…
- Your host runs Linux and you value documented installation, SteamCMD updates, cron automation, logs, validation, backups and monitoring.
- You are comfortable managing a service account, files, firewall rules and scheduled maintenance.
- You want low infrastructure overhead and reproducible server operations.
Pick PZ Server Manager if…
- You administer Windows and want profiles, Workshop tools, sandbox presets and console actions in one desktop app.
- You regularly create test worlds, duplicate configurations or wipe a world while retaining settings and mods.
- You prefer visible controls over a terminal and do not need a multi-node web panel.
Pick Pterodactyl if…
- You already run a panel and Wings nodes and need browser access, Docker isolation, SFTP, backups, resource limits or staff permissions.
- You have verified a maintained Project Zomboid egg for the exact branch and configuration you intend to operate.
- You are prepared to maintain the panel, nodes, images and community integration as well as the game itself.
Final recommendation
For most Linux-based Project Zomboid servers, LinuxGSM is the strongest overall recommendation because its documented feature set covers the complete operational cycle: SteamCMD installation, updates, lifecycle control, diagnostics, backups, monitoring and cron automation. On Windows, PZ Server Manager is the better answer when the daily work is profile management, mods, sandbox rules and world resets rather than fleet administration. Pterodactyl is a capable infrastructure layer, not a turnkey Project Zomboid manager; choose it only after confirming the community egg and branch support.
