Why these games stand out
Role-playing: Final Fantasy VII and The Legend of Dragoon
For a story-led role-playing game, Final Fantasy VII is the broad starting point: PlayStation’s history page singles it out as part of the original console’s legacy. If you want a turn-based fantasy adventure instead, The Legend of Dragoon offers a different route. Sony describes it as a four-disc release and notes its story and setting have a cult following. Those details make it a useful alternative, not proof that one is objectively superior.
Stealth: Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid is the pick for players drawn to cautious infiltration rather than straightforward action. PlayStation describes its central setup as infiltrating a nuclear base, which signals its stealth-focused appeal.
#1 Best Overall
- Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, return for an exciting new adventure in the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise. Swing, jump, and utilize the new Web Wings to travel across Marvel’s New York, quickly switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales to experience different stories and epic new powers, as the iconic villain Venom threatens to destroy their lives, their city, and the ones they love.
- An evolution of the Spider-Man story: The incredible power of the symbiote forces Peter and Miles to face the ultimate test of strength, both inside and outside the mask, as they balance their lives, friendships, and their duty to protect those in need.
- Experience two playable Spider-Men: Quickly swap between both Spider-Men as you explore an expanded Marvel’s New York. Experience Peter’s new symbiote abilities and Miles’ explosive bio-electric venom powers, and discover upgradeable, high-tech equipment that enhances the combat experience for extensive gameplay depth and variety.
- Battle iconic Marvel Super Villains: Fight against a variety of new and iconic villains, including an original take on the monstrous Venom, the ruthless Kraven the Hunter, the volatile Lizard, and many more!
Racing: Gran Turismo and R4: Ridge Racer Type 4
Choose Gran Turismo if you want a more realism-oriented driving experience. Sony reports that the first Gran Turismo sold over one million copies in its first month in Japan; the history page does not state the year for that figure, so it should not be tied to a specific release year.
Choose R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 for a more arcade-style approach. PlayStation contrasts its emphasis on style with simulation, making the pair a useful split between two different racing moods rather than a direct head-to-head ranking.

Platforming and adventure: Crash Bandicoot, Ape Escape, and MediEvil
Crash Bandicoot is the colorful challenge in this group. Ape Escape is the one to consider if analog-controller-based gadget play sounds appealing. MediEvil adds action-adventure and puzzles. The right choice depends on whether you want precision platforming, playful tool use, or a mix of combat and exploration.
Horror, fighting, and multiplayer: three different kinds of action
Resident Evil: Director’s Cut is the horror option, with a mansion setting and Chris and Jill as its protagonists in PlayStation’s description. Tekken 2 suits players looking for a fighter, while Twisted Metal shifts the action into vehicular combat and multiplayer. They serve distinct purposes, so the best fit depends on whether you want tension, head-to-head fights, or chaotic group play.

How to play these PS1 games today
Check PlayStation Plus availability in your country
PlayStation Plus Premium is the relevant subscription tier for the Classics Catalog on Sony’s current US membership page. Premium members can download or stream eligible catalog games, but the catalog and service benefits can change and vary by region. Check the live catalog for your country and the exact title before subscribing; the appearance of a game in a past Sony feature does not guarantee that it is available now.
Sony’s US support guidance says downloading eligible Classics Catalog games on PS4 or PS5 requires an appropriate PlayStation Plus plan. Streaming also requires an appropriate plan and broadband of at least 5 Mbps. For 1080p streaming, Sony specifies at least 15 Mbps when the game supports that resolution. See Sony’s Classics Catalog support guide for the current details.

- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Use an original PlayStation disc
Physical PS1 discs are another route, but buying one requires checking the specific copy rather than assuming every listing will work for every setup. Confirm the platform, region, completeness, disc condition, seller, and compatibility with the console you plan to use. Sony’s PlayStation history documents original releases including Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid, but it does not establish current stock, prices, or the condition of any listing.
