For a standalone action-adventure story, start with Ghost of Yōtei; for uncertain tastes, a PlayStation Store gift card gives the recipient more choice. This is a retrospective look at the 2025 holiday guide, not a current 2026 ranking.
How to choose a PS5 game for someone else
The guide offers a range of games rather than one universal winner. Match the gift to what the recipient enjoys, and consider whether they prefer a solo story or multiplayer, a familiar series or a standalone entry, and a physical copy or digital play. Which games from PlayStation’s 2025 guide fit different players?
For a standalone action-adventure story: Ghost of Yōtei
PlayStation describes Ghost of Yōtei as following mercenary Atsu in 1600s rural Japan. The guide calls it a standalone experience set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, so a recipient does not need to have played the earlier game to follow this story. For science-fiction storytelling: Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
The guide presents Death Stranding 2: On the Beach as a science-fiction choice in which Sam and his allies return in an effort to save humanity and expand the Chiral Network. It is also among the guide’s physical-copy gift options, making it a candidate if the recipient likes story-driven science fiction and appreciates a boxed game.

PlayStation’s descriptions point to distinct multiplayer experiences: ARC Raiders is an extraction game, Battlefield 6 features infantry and aerial combat with destructible environments, and Helldivers 2 is cooperative multiplayer. These are better matched to someone who wants to play with or against others than to a buyer seeking a clearly solo story.
For a turn-based RPG: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 combines turn-based role-playing combat with real-time mechanics, according to the guide. It is the most direct fit here for someone who likes tactical combat with action elements rather than a purely real-time action game.

Physical copy, Collector’s Edition or gift card?
Choose a physical game for a conventional wrapped present
PlayStation lists physical-copy gifts including Ghost of Yōtei and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The physical format makes a tangible present, but check that the recipient can use the edition you buy and confirm current stock and price before ordering.

It is therefore not simply a boxed disc with extras; the game component is a download.
Choose Store credit when the preference is uncertain
PlayStation says a Store gift card can be used for games, add-ons or subscriptions, and recommends it as a way to give someone a PlayStation Plus membership because the membership itself cannot be gifted directly. Check the card’s regional availability and current terms before buying.

What the later 2025 player-voted awards add
On December 18, 2025, PlayStation Blog published the results of its player-voted Game of the Year awards. In Best PS5 Game, Ghost of Yōtei received Platinum, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Gold, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Silver, and ARC Raiders Bronze. PlayStation said voting was nearly evenly split during polling, so these placements are an award snapshot—not an objective measure of quality or a ranking available before the 2025 holiday.
