If you’re wondering what PSP game to play first, choose by the kind of experience you want: Lumines: Puzzle Fusion for quick puzzle rounds, Daxter for platforming, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for stealth and base-building, or Persona 3 Portable for a story-led RPG. This guide offers seven distinct starting points rather than a single objective ranking; the picks draw on GamesRadar+’s retrospective and Sony’s historical PSP catalog.
Which PSP game should you play first?
Start with the style that sounds most appealing. The games below differ in pace, challenge, and commitment, so “best” depends on what you want from a session.

| If you want… | Start with… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| A repeatable puzzle game | Lumines: Puzzle Fusion | Blocks, music, and changing visuals are integrated into its puzzle play. |
| Rhythm-driven strategy | Patapon 3 | You issue commands to an army through drum beats, combining timing with tactical decisions. |
| Platform action | Daxter | A portable spin-off built around platforming, action, minigames, and collectibles. |
| Cinematic action and bosses | God of War: Ghost of Sparta | Kratos searches for his brother Deimos in an action-focused adventure. |
| Stealth missions and base management | Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker | It pairs stealth missions with Mother Base management and includes co-op and versus modes. |
| A substantial, story-led RPG | Persona 3 Portable | A portable adaptation centered on RPG progression and dungeon crawling. |
| A demanding hunt that rewards preparation | Monster Hunter Freedom Unite | Its difficult monsters make patience and planning central to the experience. |
These are taste-based recommendations, not a measured or universal ranking. GamesRadar+ ranked Lumines first in its retrospective, but a ranking is editorial judgment, not proof that it is the right first game for every player. GamesRadar+’s PSP games retrospective includes descriptions of all seven picks.
What each recommendation is like
Lumines: Puzzle Fusion: focused puzzle sessions
Choose Lumines if you want a puzzle game whose block-matching is linked to its music and visuals. Its repeatable format makes it a natural starting point when you want a game you can return to in shorter sessions, rather than commit to a long story.
#1 Best Overall
- Go faster than ever on much longer streets, reaching scary speeds
- Get from checkpoint to checkpoint while you outmaneuver aggressive, alone or in multiplayer mode
- New Garage Mode for adding high-end customization to your racing machine
- Add style to your ride, with wheels customized with parts from Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Ducati and more
Patapon 3: command by rhythm
Patapon 3 turns drum beats into commands for an army. The appeal is the blend of rhythmic timing and strategy, with multiplayer elements also noted in GamesRadar+’s description. It is the pick for someone who wants an unusual structure rather than conventional platforming or action.
Daxter: familiar platforming with extras
Daxter is the straightforward recommendation for platform-action fans. Its mix of platforming, action, minigames, and collectibles gives it more variety than a single-mechanic puzzle game, without the long-form RPG commitment of Persona 3 Portable.
Rank #2
- Playable Jedi warriors
- 16 new locations and never-before-seen Star Wars environments and graphics
- Track your stats, join a clan, and find your comrades when playing online
- Upgraded AI
God of War: Ghost of Sparta: mythic action
For large-scale action and boss fights, consider Ghost of Sparta. Its story follows Kratos searching for Deimos; Sony’s platform history describes the broader God of War series in terms of mythic action, combo combat, and large bosses. See Sony’s PlayStation platform history for that series context.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker: stealth plus a home base
Peace Walker joins stealth missions to Mother Base management, giving players both mission-focused action and a broader progression loop. GamesRadar+ also notes co-op and versus modes. Sony included the game in its historical PSP Greatest Hits collection; that confirms its place in the catalog, not its current price or availability.
Rank #3
- Tear it up in more than 30 unique environments.
- 6 distinct terrain types including snow, dirt, mud, ice, water and grass.
- Multiple player capable using PSP wireless multiplayer connectivity
- See from both first and third-person perspectives
- Several race modes such as race, freestyle, career or any of the various mini-games
Persona 3 Portable: a longer RPG commitment
Pick Persona 3 Portable if you want an RPG with a story and dungeon-crawling progression. It is a better fit for someone ready to spend time with one game than for a player looking primarily for short, self-contained rounds.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite: preparation is part of the challenge
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is the choice for players who enjoy difficult encounters and planning before a fight. GamesRadar+ emphasizes patience and challenging monsters, making it the least casual-sounding entry in this starter set. Sony’s historical catalog also lists the title.
Rank #4
- Playstation portable game
- Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
How to narrow the choice
Before buying a game, decide what kind of play you’re actually looking for. These comparisons help separate the recommendations without relying on unsupported claims about exact completion time.
- Session style: Try Lumines for repeatable puzzle play; choose one of the adventure or RPG games if you want a more sustained arc.
- Core interaction: Patapon 3 is built around beat-driven commands; Daxter around platform action; Peace Walker around stealth missions and base management.
- Challenge preference: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is specifically described as difficult and preparation-heavy. The other choices have different styles, but the cited descriptions do not establish a comparable difficulty scale.
- Story commitment: Persona 3 Portable is the clear story-led RPG option. If story commitment is not what you want, begin with a puzzle or action game instead.
- Multiplayer interest: GamesRadar+ notes co-op and versus modes for Peace Walker and multiplayer elements for Patapon 3. Confirm the mode and connectivity requirements for the specific copy and setup you plan to use.
How to play PSP games today
The PSP plays games on Universal Media Disc (UMD), and Sony’s user guide documents Memory Stick media for saved data and starting games. Sony’s guide for system software version 6.60 also says the PSP Store no longer sells PSP games, in-game content, or videos. That means the Store is not a route for new PSP purchases; prospective players should look for a compatible PSP and legitimate used UMD copies instead. Sony’s documentation is at PSP Game category and PSP Store.

Availability depends on where you live and what sellers currently have. No market-wide stock, condition, or fair-price figure is established here, so check the actual listing and console before committing.
Used PSP and UMD checks
- Confirm the exact PSP model and that the game’s media is compatible with it.
- Ask whether the UMD drive reads games reliably, not merely whether the console powers on.
- Check the disc and case condition, and establish whether the listing includes the components you expect.
- Check region and seller terms for the particular console and copy; do not assume every listing is interchangeable.
- Confirm what storage is included if you need Memory Stick media for saves or other data.
Are there modern versions of these PSP games?
Some recommendations have versions or releases on newer platforms, but those are not necessarily identical editions to the PSP originals. GamesRadar+ reports Lumines Remastered for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch, and reports Patapon 3 on PS4 and PS5. Check the live store listing for your region before purchasing: platform availability can change, and the source’s listing does not establish current regional storefront status.
Sony’s February 25, 2011 announcement reported more than 67 million PSP units worldwide, including 23 million in North America. Those are figures Sony published in 2011, not current hardware totals. The announcement is useful as historical catalog context, not as evidence of present-day availability or pricing: PlayStation.Blog’s 2011 PSP collection announcement.
