Choose an all-digital console if you buy and access games digitally and do not need optical media. Check the exact model before you buy: Xbox Series X comes in disc-drive and all-digital configurations, while Xbox Series S is all-digital; Sony also sells PS5 configurations with and without a disc drive.
Should I get a disc or digital console?
Start with the games and movies you actually plan to use. A disc-drive console gives you the option to use compatible physical game discs; an all-digital console cannot play disc-based games. If UHD Blu-ray movie playback matters, check that the specific console has a compatible drive.
- Choose a disc-drive model if you own or expect to buy compatible physical games, or want UHD Blu-ray playback.
- Choose an all-digital model if you are comfortable getting games digitally and do not need disc playback. It avoids swapping discs, but cannot serve as a player for your disc-based titles.
For Xbox, Microsoft states that Series S is all-digital and does not support disc-based games. Its Series X family includes drive-equipped configurations with a UHD Blu-ray Disc player as well as an all-digital option. See Microsoft’s Xbox console specifications.
Is the disc version worth it?
It is worth considering when disc playback is a real use for you. Compare the additional cost of the exact drive-equipped model with the value of being able to use compatible discs; do not assume the drive will pay for itself through cheaper games or resale. The available product information does not establish a general pattern for digital discounts, physical-game resale value, lending, or sharing.

Price comparisons need a location and date. On Microsoft’s U.S. product page captured on October 7, 2026, the Xbox Series X 1TB Disc Drive Carbon Black was listed at $799.99, and the Xbox Series X 1TB All-Digital Robot White at $749.99. Microsoft notes that prices and availability may vary by retailer, so treat those figures as a dated U.S. listing, not a universal or lasting price difference. Check Microsoft’s current Xbox listings.

Do not rely on a family name alone: different models in one console family can have different drive support, storage, or performance positioning.

Xbox Series X and Series S
Microsoft lists Series X configurations with a disc drive, including 1TB and 2TB drive-equipped options, alongside a 1TB all-digital Series X. Series S is all-digital. Microsoft positions Series X for native 4K and Series S for 1440p gaming with the ability to upscale to 4K; actual performance depends on supported content and display. The product page also advertises up to 120 FPS, subject to supported content and display. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. PlayStation 5
Sony’s U.S. purchase page distinguishes a PS5 with Blu-ray Disc capability from Digital Edition options. It also describes an additional disc drive sold separately for an all-digital version. Confirm the precise console SKU and the requirements for any add-on drive before purchasing; do not assume every Digital Edition has the same accessory compatibility. Sony says the disc-capable console can play PS5 and PS4 game collections on Blu-ray Disc. Review Sony’s U.S. PS5 purchase options.

Can I play my physical games on an all-digital console?
No: an all-digital console without an optical drive cannot read a physical game disc. Microsoft explicitly says disc-based games are unsupported on Xbox Series S. For any console model or separately sold drive, verify compatibility with the specific games and hardware configuration rather than inferring it from the product family name.
