If you want a fuller Castle Town and its activities, recruit eligible enemies by sparing or pacifying them; if you prioritize immediate combat strength, violent victories provide a temporary Chapter-specific trade-off. Recruitment begins in Chapter 2, and a recruitable enemy defeated violently is lost for that run.
This guide covers the game as of October 13, 2026. The official FAQ says Chapter 6 is still in development, so the advice here applies to released content rather than future chapters.

Which Deltarune recruits are best?
Choose recruits according to what you want from a playthrough, rather than treating them as a power ranking. Recruiting enemies contributes to Castle Town’s population and can unlock activities. The official gameplay reminder sheet describes the town as becoming livelier and says recruitment may unlock activities. By contrast, defeating enemies violently from Chapter 2 onward raises the party’s HP, Attack, and Magic for the rest of that Chapter, up to a limit.

How recruitment works
Recruitment is not available in Chapter 1. Chapter 1 enemies are recruited automatically at the start of Chapter 2. From Chapter 2 onward, sparing or pacifying eligible enemies recruits them. For most enemy types, you must spare enough of the same type to complete that recruit; one successful spare does not necessarily finish the count.

Spare an enemy
Use ACT options to raise an enemy’s MERCY until SPARE becomes available, then choose SPARE. Avoid FIGHT and damaging spells if you are trying to preserve a recruitable enemy.
Pacify a TIRED enemy
Ralsei can use PACIFY on a TIRED enemy when the party has at least 16% TP. This can recruit the enemy without waiting to raise its MERCY to the SPARE threshold.
Know the limits
Not every enemy or boss follows the same rules. The official gameplay reminder sheet warns that some bosses may not be defeatable either violently or nonviolently, so do not assume every encounter can be resolved through recruitment.

How to check whether you have recruited enough
The official guidance says there is always a way near the end of a Chapter to confirm whether you recruited all the enemies. Use that chapter’s completion cue before advancing. Dark World SAVE-point recruit menus can also show recruited totals and remaining counts for partially recruited enemy types, according to the community-maintained Deltarune Wiki. Treat individual menu details and chapter-specific checks as secondary-reference guidance, since they can depend on the chapter and game version.

- At a Dark World SAVE point, check the recruit display if it is available in that chapter.
- Look for enemy types with remaining recruits and spare or pacify more of those types.
- Before leaving the chapter, use its near-end confirmation cue to check for any recruits still missing.
What recruiting changes in Castle Town
Recruiting enemies makes Castle Town more populated and may open activities. The exact effects depend on the chapter and the enemies recruited, so “recruit everyone” is a completion strategy, not a universal requirement for finishing the game.
Chapter 2 example: Thrash Machine
The Deltarune Wiki reports that each recruited enemy in Chapter 2 adds 5 HP to the Thrash Machine, starting from 200 HP and capped at 250. This is a chapter-specific mechanic, not a general bonus for all recruits or chapters. The same community reference describes additional activity and dialogue conditions tied to recruitment counts or particular enemies.
Later chapters
The community reference also describes conditional activities and story outcomes in Chapters 3 and 4. Those outcomes should be checked against the specific chapter’s requirements rather than reduced to a rule that missing a recruit blocks the game. For the dependable general check, follow the game’s own near-end confirmation cue.

A practical recruitment strategy
- Decide your priority. For Castle Town content or roster completion, favor sparing and pacifying; for current-Chapter combat stats, weigh the violence trade-off knowingly.
- Use nonviolent actions on recruitable standard enemies. Build MERCY with ACTs or use PACIFY on a TIRED enemy when you have at least 16% TP.
- Track enemy types, not just individual encounters. Some types require multiple successful spares before they are fully recruited.
- Check progress before leaving. Review the recruit display where available and use the chapter’s near-end confirmation method.
- Handle bosses separately. Their defeat and recruitment rules may differ from standard enemies.
Current chapter coverage
The official DELTARUNE FAQ, updated June 24, 2026, says the full game is available on PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. It also states that Chapter 6 is in development and not complete. Recruitment advice and roster details can change with future chapters, so current chapter-specific lists should not be treated as a forecast of the final game.
