The studio’s August 2026 release plan places it in Q2 2027, but that is a target, not a guarantee. Beyond Good & Evil 2 has a much older announcement history than its current incarnation, while The Elder Scrolls VI was announced in 2018 and has not yet reached ten years since that announcement.
That distinction matters: time since a game was first announced is not necessarily time spent developing the version that may eventually ship. Rather than claim five verified ten-plus-year development cycles, here are three well-documented long waits and what the dates actually establish.

Which games have been in development for over 10 years?
Among these documented projects, Squadron 42 is the clear fit for a strict ten-year development threshold. Cloud Imperium says development began in 2014. The other two projects are notable long waits, but their timelines need different labels: Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first announced in 2008 and re-announced in a different form in 2017, while The Elder Scrolls VI was announced in 2018.

Squadron 42: a 2014 start, with a Q2 2027 target
Cloud Imperium’s chairman letter dated August 27, 2026 says development on Squadron 42 began in 2014. That makes it the strongest example here of a project with a developer-stated development history exceeding ten years.
The same letter says the studio had previously planned a 2026 release, initially targeting Q4, but later selected Q2 2027 as a better window. This is Cloud Imperium’s plan, not a confirmed release date. The letter also says the studio divided staff between Squadron 42 and Star Citizen, then shifted that allocation in Squadron 42’s favor toward the end of 2024. Cloud Imperium described the split as difficult: “Having to split time and resources between two hugely ambitious projects is very difficult.” (Cloud Imperium chairman letter, August 27, 2026.)

The relationship with Star Citizen is relevant context, but the projects should not be conflated. Star Citizen has a live version and planned updates; its roadmap warns that planned features can move. It is not an unreleased game in the same sense as Squadron 42. (Official Star Citizen roadmap.)

Beyond Good & Evil 2: a long announcement history, not one proven continuous cycle
Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first announced in 2008, according to GameSpot, then re-announced in 2017 as an open-world prequel. Those milestones explain why the project can appear to have an exceptionally long history, but they do not establish that the present version has been in uninterrupted development since 2008. Ubisoft’s September 18, 2020 update said the game was “well underway,” with the team focused on core development and production milestones. Senior Producer Guillaume Brunier also described a build with hours of gameplay. That is a dated account of the project’s status in 2020, not confirmation of its current state or a release window. The Elder Scrolls VI: announced in 2018, now a primary focus
Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls VI on June 10, 2018, describing it as being in pre-production at the time. As of October 12, 2026, about eight years and four months had passed since that public announcement—not ten years. Announcement age and development duration are separate measures, so the 2018 date does not establish when work on the game began. (Bethesda’s 2018 announcement.)

In a July 2026 studio update, Bethesda Game Studios said: “The Elder Scrolls VI is our primary development focus today, with the majority of our team currently working on the next chapter of the franchise.” That is the studio’s latest stated focus in the sources cited here, not a release date. The update also says Skyrim has sold more than 65 million copies; that is a figure for the earlier game, not a measure of the sequel’s development. (Bethesda Game Studios’ July 2026 update.)

- An announcement is not a development start date. It marks when the public learned about a project, not necessarily when production began.
- A re-announcement can describe a changed project. The 2017 presentation of Beyond Good & Evil 2 as an open-world prequel makes its 2008-to-present history different from a confirmed, continuous development span.
- Release windows can change. Cloud Imperium’s move from a Q4 2026 target to Q2 2027 shows why a planned window should not be read as a promise.
- Related projects can share staff without being the same game. Cloud Imperium says resource allocation between Star Citizen and Squadron 42 affected the latter’s progress, while Star Citizen itself remains playable in a live version.

When will Squadron 42 come out?
Cloud Imperium’s August 27, 2026 plan targets Q2 2027. The studio has described release timing as a plan, so the window is not guaranteed.
Why is The Elder Scrolls 6 taking so long?
Bethesda Game Studios said in July 2026 that it was the studio’s primary development focus, with most of its team working on it, but did not give a release date or explain the full development timeline.
