The best Roblox alternative depends on what your child enjoys: Minecraft is the closest fit for building and open-ended exploration, while LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is a free option for cooperative crafting and survival. Neither is automatically safer than Roblox; each has online features and parental controls that families should review before play.

Both games offer more defined play modes than Roblox’s broad collection of user-created experiences. They are not one-for-one substitutes: Minecraft centers on a flexible block-based world, while Odyssey puts more emphasis on survival and crafting with others.

Minecraft: best for building and open-ended play
Minecraft is a strong first choice if your child mainly enjoys making places, exploring, and inventing their own goals. Minecraft’s Parents’ Guide describes Creative and Survival modes; it also says single-player lets a child explore at their own pace. Families can begin with single-player or Creative mode, then decide whether to allow multiplayer.

Review Minecraft’s multiplayer and communication settings
Minecraft’s parental-controls guidance explains that family settings can govern multiplayer access, friends, and communication. Those controls depend on the account and version: Minecraft says parental controls are not provided for versions earlier than 1.16.4 or for modded versions. Keep the game updated and verify that the child is using the intended Microsoft account and family settings.
LEGO Fortnite Odyssey: best for free cooperative crafting
LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is a free experience inside Fortnite, not a standalone LEGO game. LEGO describes four modes: Survival, Sandbox, Cozy, and Expert. It may suit a child who wants to gather resources, craft, and play in a shared world. It requires Fortnite and an Epic Games account.

Set up privacy and chat before inviting friends
LEGO’s Odyssey Parents’ Guide says worlds are private by default and other players need an invitation to join. That privacy setting does not remove social features: text and voice chat are available. Parents can manage chat, purchases, friend requests, and island ratings using Epic parental controls and controls on the child’s console or device.

LEGO says accounts for children under 13—or under the higher local digital-consent age—become Cabined Accounts. Some features, including voice chat, are limited until parental consent is provided. The exact experience can therefore depend on the child’s age, region, account, and platform. Odyssey is available on major consoles and PC; LEGO says mobile availability varies by market, so check the local storefront.

Should you change Roblox settings instead?
Switching games is not the only option. Roblox’s Safety Center describes age-based content ratings and chat settings, and Roblox announced global availability of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts on June 16, 2026. The company describes Roblox Kids for ages 5–8 in most regions and Roblox Select for ages 9–15 in most regions. Availability, age checks, and settings can vary, so check the child’s account and region in the Roblox Safety Center and the announcement about Roblox Kids and Roblox Select.

How to choose and prepare
- Match the play style. Choose Minecraft for building and open-ended exploration; choose Odyssey if cooperative crafting and survival are the draw.
- Check the local rating and device support. Ratings differ by region and edition. Confirm that the game is available for the child’s platform, especially if considering Odyssey on mobile.
- Start with the least social setup. In Minecraft, begin in single-player if that fits. In Odyssey, keep the world private and invite only people your family knows.
- Review the account controls. Confirm the correct child account and check multiplayer, friends, chat, spending, and platform-level communication settings that apply to the game.
- Revisit the settings as the child’s account changes. Age-based features and platform controls can change with age, region, software updates, or account configuration.
