- The game launched at least once and reached the title screen. This creates the installation data that SMM needs to find.
- An internet connection for SMM, SML, mods and dependencies.
- A mod that supports your current game and SML versions.

How to install Satisfactory mods with SMM
1. Launch Satisfactory once
Start the game normally and wait until the title screen appears, then quit. The official Satisfactory modding documentation lists this as a prerequisite because the first launch creates the folders and configuration SMM relies on.
2. Download Satisfactory Mod Manager
Get SMM from ficsit.app or smm.ficsit.app. The SMM site chooses the appropriate build from the latest GitHub release based on your browser. On Windows, you can also install it from Windows Package Manager:

Windows may warn that the installer is not commonly downloaded. If you obtained it from the official SMM or ficsit.app route, choose Keep and continue through the installer.
On Linux, download the AppImage and mark it executable before launching it. You can do this in your file manager’s permissions dialog or with:

4. Let SMM find the game
Open SMM after installation. It should detect Steam and Epic copies automatically. If it presents more than one path, select the installation you actually use and allow SMM to finish its initial setup.
5. Install a mod
- Open the mod browser in SMM.
- Search for the mod by name and open its page.
- Read the compatibility information, required game version and any client/server notes.
- Click the download arrow beside the mod.
- Wait while SMM downloads the mod, SML and any listed dependencies.
- Launch Satisfactory through SMM or use the configured game shortcut, depending on the manager’s current prompt.
Do not extract archives into the game directory unless a mod’s own instructions explicitly require a manual step. SMM is designed to place files in the right locations and keep the dependency chain consistent.
How SMM, SML and dependencies fit together
Satisfactory Mod Loader is the framework that loads compatible mods when the game starts. Individual mods can depend on SML or on other libraries. SMM resolves those relationships when you click the download control, which is why installing a single large mod can download several additional packages.
If a mod appears installed but the game starts without it, check the SMM profile, confirm SML is enabled, and verify that the mod supports your current game build. A game update can leave the base installation working while temporarily breaking one or more mods.

Smart!: the biggest time saver
Smart! targets the repetitive part of factory building. Its notable workflow is selecting a line of constructors and having the mod connect the required power, belts and pipes as you build. That can save substantial setup time, but it also changes the normal construction process. Because all players must install it on the server example cited above, it is not a drop-in client-only enhancement for an unmodded group.
Satisfactory Plus: choose it for a different game
Satisfactory Plus is an overhaul, not a small convenience pack. Its material and recipe changes create a harder and longer progression path. Install it when the goal is a new ruleset and a fresh save, not when you simply want faster building in an existing vanilla factory.
Refined Power: expand the energy layer
Refined Power adds more than 30 energy-generating buildings. It suits players who enjoy designing generation and distribution systems. Treat it as a content expansion: check its current dependencies and save-game guidance before adding it to an established world.
Taj’s Graphical Overhaul: visual changes with version sensitivity
This UE5-oriented overhaul focuses on lighting and performance. Visual mods can be particularly sensitive to engine and rendering changes, so verify support for your exact game version before updating.
Difficulty Tuner: adjust the rules instead of the buildings

Micro Manage, Area Actions and Infinite Nudge: precision tools
These three mods solve different construction frustrations:
- Micro Manage gives individual buildings free movement, rotation, scaling and cloning.
- Area Actions works on a selected region, allowing bulk copy, movement or deletion.

Keeping mods working after Satisfactory updates
Compatibility is the main maintenance issue. SML and large mods can lag behind a major game update by days or weeks. A mod list described as current for version 1.2 is not a guarantee that it will work with every later build.

- Back up important saves.
- Update SMM and SML when the manager offers compatible versions.
- Update mods in small batches so you can identify the package that causes a failure.
- If a save will not load, disable recently updated mods in SMM and test a copy of the save rather than overwriting the original.
Do not assume that a successful vanilla launch proves your mod profile is healthy. Test the modded profile separately and read the mod page’s change notes before enabling a new version.

Installing mods on a dedicated server
Dedicated-server modding requires coordination between the server installation and the players who connect to it. In SMM, open Manage Servers in the left sidebar and connect to the server over SFTP using the credentials supplied by your host. Install the server-side packages there, then follow each mod’s instructions for player-side files.
For a hosted Satisfactory world, Godlike.Host offers Satisfactory servers with a Pterodactyl-based game panel, SFTP/FTP access and a built-in mod installer and updater.
Client-required versus server-only behavior
Not every mod has the same network requirement. The cited server guide explicitly marks Smart! as requiring a client installation for all players. Other mods may be server-side, client-side or require both; the authoritative answer is the current requirement shown on that mod’s page.

- Keep the server’s SML and dependency versions aligned with the clients.
- Use a separate test world before changing a production save.
- Remove or update incompatible mods on the server before asking players to reconnect.
An official manual-install route exists for SML and mods, but SMM is the route most guides recommend because it handles dependencies and reduces path mistakes.
Do Satisfactory mods work on console?
Console support is unconfirmed. A third-party guide says Coffee Stain has not discussed console mod support, so you should not assume that a PC mod installed through SMM can run on PlayStation or Xbox. The documented SMM workflow applies to PC installations.
Common problems and fixes
SMM cannot find the game
- Launch Satisfactory to the title screen once, then restart SMM.
- Check whether SMM selected the correct Steam or Epic installation.
- If you have moved the game, point SMM at the current library location.
The download is blocked by the browser
Windows may label a new SMM download as not commonly downloaded. Use Keep only when the file came from the official SMM or ficsit.app route; do not bypass warnings for an unknown mirror.
The Linux AppImage will not open
Set the executable permission in the file manager or run chmod +x SatisfactoryModManager*.AppImage, then launch it again.
