It runs on NeoForge and Java 21; treat 8 GB of heap as the floor and plan closer to 10–16 GB for an active group. For less demanding servers, Better MC 5 (BMC5) is the safer vanilla-plus choice, while Cobblemon Official is the lightest focused option for a Pokémon-style server.

The figures for RAM are planning guidance from hosting-company articles, not laboratory minimums. A server’s total memory requirement also includes the operating system, Java overhead, backups, maps and other services; do not allocate every available gigabyte to the Java heap.
How to choose the right pack
Choose ATM10 for a long-running technical world
ATM10 is the most ambitious option in this list. Roundups describe roughly 400–500 mods, a quest-driven endgame, extensive technology and automation, and multiple magic systems. That breadth gives a group many ways to progress, but it increases download size, startup time, world-generation load and the amount of configuration you must maintain. It is a good fit when players are willing to learn a large mod ecosystem and the host can provide dependable CPU performance as well as memory.

Choose BMC5 for a gentler shared server
Better MC 5 is positioned as a vanilla-plus pack: more exploration and quality-of-life content than unmodded Minecraft, but less of the industrial complexity associated with ATM10. It is the safer choice for a mixed group whose players may join irregularly or who do not want to study hundreds of systems. BMC4 is a separate 1.20.1 Forge line; installing it does not create a 1.21.1 server. Both lines are described as maintained, but their release contents change often, so verify the current BMC5 version before downloading.
Choose Cobblemon for a focused creature-collecting server
Cobblemon Official is designed around Pokémon-style collecting and battling while retaining survival gameplay. It is described as surprisingly light for its content, and one source lists 4–6 GB of server RAM. That is a single-source estimate rather than a guaranteed minimum, but it makes Cobblemon the most practical starting point for a smaller group that wants a themed experience. The pack is available for either Fabric or NeoForge; every player and the server must use the same loader and pack release.
Consider Pixelmon only after checking its exact release
One comparison lists Pixelmon on NeoForge 1.21.1 with Java 21 and a 6–8 GB server estimate. Because the wider list also includes older Pixelmon references in community discussions, confirm the actual 1.21.1 server files and loader in the current distribution page rather than assuming that every Pixelmon download targets 1.21.

Minecraft, loader and Java
ATM10 targets Minecraft 1.21.1 and uses NeoForge. Java 21 is required. A setup guide reports that the server does not start on Java 17, so installing the correct runtime is not optional. On the host, run java -version and confirm that the reported major version is 21 before troubleshooting the pack itself.

Heap settings and realistic headroom
The pack’s own user_jvm_args.txt sets -Xms4G and -Xmx8G. Those values describe the pack’s starting heap configuration, not a promise that every group will run smoothly with only 8 GB of total machine memory. Hosting guidance commonly recommends 10 GB as a starting allocation, 12–16 GB for five to ten players, and at least 16 GB for an active or public group. Treat 8 GB as the minimum heap to test, then increase allocation when concurrent players, chunk generation or automation causes pauses.

These are conservative provider planning figures, not hard minimums. A fast processor, storage speed, view distance, mod configuration and player behavior can move the real requirement in either direction.
Server-pack size and the correct download
Download the dedicated server pack ZIP, not the client ZIP. The client archive is a manifest intended for a launcher and does not run as a server. Reported sizes for the same ATM10 8.2 server file differ: one listing puts ServerFiles-8.2.zip at about 1.1 GB, while another reports a 1.22 GB download and approximately 1.34 GB unpacked. File mirrors, compression and release revisions can explain a difference, so use the size shown on the current CurseForge Files tab as the authoritative check.
NeoForge loader pin
One installation guide reports that the ATM10 8.2 start script pins NeoForge 21.1.251, while its installer fetched 21.1.252, a build the guide had not tested. Do not replace the bundled loader casually. If you must change it, record the original version, make a backup and test the complete pack before allowing players to connect. A seemingly minor loader mismatch can produce missing-mod errors or a server that stops during startup.

Setting up a self-hosted 1.21 server
For a hosted alternative to maintaining the machine, Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft hosting with a built-in mod installer, one-click modpacks and SFTP/FTP access.
- Choose the pack and exact release. Open the pack’s current Files listing and confirm Minecraft version, loader, release number and whether a separate server pack is offered.
- Prepare the machine. Use a 64-bit operating system, fast storage and enough physical RAM for both Java and the operating system. For ATM10, install Java 21 and verify it with
java -version. - Download the server archive. Select the file explicitly labelled as server files. Do not substitute a client manifest or a launcher export.
- Extract to a dedicated folder. Keep the server in its own directory so its world, configuration, logs, scripts and backups are easy to copy and restore.
- Run the included start script once. Use the supplied Windows or Linux script rather than inventing a new command. The first run normally creates configuration files and stops for the Minecraft EULA.
- Accept the EULA only after reading it. Open the generated
eula.txt, change the acceptance setting only if you agree to Mojang’s terms, save it, and run the start script again. - Review memory arguments. Keep ATM10’s supplied
-Xms4Gand-Xmx8Gfor a controlled test, or raise the maximum to match your measured player load and available physical memory. Never allocate more than the machine can sustain. - Wait for a clean startup. The console should finish loading without repeated mod, Java or loader errors and should expose the normal server prompt. Stop it cleanly before making configuration changes.
- Install the matching client pack. Every player needs the same Minecraft version, loader, modpack release and configuration expected by the server. A client on a different release can be rejected even when the server itself is healthy.
- Test privately. Join locally or with a trusted player, travel to new chunks, open inventories, use the pack’s major systems and watch memory and tick behavior before publishing the address.
Keeping the server responsive
Pre-generate terrain before opening the world
Exploration forces the server to create and save chunks, which can cause the largest temporary spikes in CPU, storage and memory. Chunky is a commonly used pre-generation tool. Run it during a maintenance window, define a bounded area around spawn, and monitor storage growth. Pre-generating an unlimited world is not a performance fix; it simply moves the cost to the preparation stage and can consume substantial disk space.
Add server-side optimization carefully
Lithium improves server tick performance, while FerriteCore reduces modded memory use. Both are listed for Fabric, Forge or NeoForge. Confirm that the build you add supports your exact loader and Minecraft version, and introduce one change at a time. Optimization mods are not automatically compatible with every modpack configuration; keep a backup so you can remove a new jar if startup or gameplay changes.

Use a map only when you need one
BlueMap and Dynmap are common mapping choices. They add useful web maps but also consume CPU, memory and disk while rendering. Enable one only after the base server is stable, restrict render distance and schedule updates outside peak play. A map is an optional service, not a requirement for any of the packs above.

Measure instead of guessing
- Watch Java heap usage, garbage-collection pauses and operating-system memory pressure.
- Record player count, view distance and the locations of automated machines when lag appears.
- Check free disk space because modded worlds, logs, map tiles and backups grow continuously.
- Keep regular world and configuration backups before updating mods, loaders or optimization tools.
- Change one variable at a time so an improvement or regression can be attributed correctly.
Common failures and their fixes
The server will not start on Java 17
ATM10 requires Java 21. Install a supported 64-bit Java 21 runtime, make sure the start script points to it, and confirm with java -version. Changing heap values will not correct an incompatible runtime.
You downloaded the client ZIP
A client archive is a manifest for a launcher, not a runnable server. Delete or set it aside, return to the current Files listing, and download the dedicated server pack. Re-extract it into a clean directory rather than mixing client files into an existing installation.
NeoForge reports a version or missing-mod mismatch
Compare the loader shown in the pack’s start script with the loader installed on the client. For ATM10 8.2, one guide records a 21.1.251 script pin and an untested 21.1.252 installer result. Restore the bundled version first, then test any deliberate update on a copy of the world.

Check whether the heap is capped at 8 GB, whether several players are generating new terrain simultaneously, and whether mapping or pre-generation jobs are running. Pause background jobs, lower view distance temporarily, and raise memory only when the host has physical headroom. If the problem persists, inspect CPU saturation and storage latency; more RAM cannot repair a processor or disk bottleneck.

Players cannot connect after an update
Confirm that the server and every client use the identical Minecraft version, loader, pack release and required configuration. Do not assume that a newer loader or a newly downloaded pack is compatible with an existing world. Restore the previous files and backup if the update changed behavior.
Older packs that are not 1.21 choices
Several popular recommendations still target older Minecraft versions: DawnCraft is listed for 1.18.2 on Forge, Prominence II for 1.20.1 on Fabric, Vault Hunters for 1.18.2 on Forge, and RLCraft uses a hardcore-survival setup with server files found under CurseForge’s Additional Files area and a manual Forge installation. They may be excellent games, but they do not satisfy a requirement for a 1.21 server. Installing one means accepting its older game version, loader and installation process.
A maintenance checklist for your first month
- Write down the exact pack release, Minecraft version, loader build and Java version.
- Keep the original server ZIP and a clean copy of the configuration outside the live directory.
- Automate or schedule backups of the world, configuration and scripts; test restoring one before you need it.
- Review logs after every update and after adding an optimization or mapping mod.
- Monitor memory during the busiest expected play period, not only when nobody is online.
- Pre-generate only the area your players actually need and check disk growth afterward.
- Announce maintenance windows and require clients to update together.
Which pack should you host?
Host ATM10 when your priority is the deepest 1.21.1 progression and you can provide Java 21, NeoForge and substantial memory headroom. Pick BMC5 when the group wants a more approachable vanilla-plus world and you prefer a lower-complexity setup. Pick Cobblemon Official when the theme is Pokémon and a 4–6 GB starting estimate is more appropriate for your small server. Pixelmon is worth considering only after you verify the current 1.21.1 NeoForge files and their requirements. In every case, download the server pack, match the client exactly, and treat published RAM numbers as starting plans rather than guarantees.
