There is no universally best sect in Where Winds Meet. Choose by the activities you enjoy, the faction rules you are willing to follow, and the rewards or Martial Arts you want—not by assuming a sect locks you into a class or is required for a strong build. Sects are optional, and the available roster and entry requirements can vary by region and game update, so check the current Sects menu before pursuing a route.
Which sect should you join?
Start with what you want to do in the game, then weigh the ongoing obligations and entry friction. The sect descriptions below are fit guidance, not a verified competitive ranking. The available sources do not establish a universally strongest faction.

For any candidate, compare five things: the activity it supports, its recurring requirements or penalties, the Martial Art and other rewards you want, how demanding the initiation sounds, and whether it is currently available in your server and build.
What do the described sects offer?
Well of Heaven: chivalry and Thundercry Blade
Well of Heaven is presented as a righteousness- and chivalry-oriented faction, with Thundercry Blade listed as its signature art. A guide reports weekly chivalrous-deed expectations, an earnings-related rule and a prohibition on harming fellow disciples. Treat those as guide-reported details, not a substitute for the current in-game precepts.
Silver Needle: healing and support
Silver Needle is the healer-focused option. Its listed Martial Arts are Panacea Fan and Inkwell Fan, and its described trial asks you to heal three NPCs. The guide also reports a weekly minimum of 15 likes and a Precept Value penalty if you miss it; verify the requirement and penalty in your client before committing.
Midnight Blades: combat and Karma
Midnight Blades is associated with open-world combat and Infernal Twin Blades. The guide describes gaining Karma by defeating wanderers and losing it when defeated. Consider it if that combat loop appeals to you, rather than treating the faction identity as a claim about overall strength.
Nine Mortal Ways: disguise and trickery
Nine Mortal Ways is the disguise-and-trickery choice, with Mortal Rope Dart listed as its signature art. Its reported initiation uses a different Easy Street branch; the guide also notes Virtue penalties for failed tricks or being jailed. Read the current clue and rules before attempting the route.

Velvet Shade: social play and Vernal Umbrella
Velvet Shade is framed around partnership and social roleplay, and its listed art is Vernal Umbrella. Its described route involves reaching Kaifeng, a partnership-related requirement and a wait after the initial steps. Because that route may change, follow the current in-game Entry Clue rather than relying on an old walkthrough.

A playstyle guide describes Kuanglan (also called Raging Tides in newer Global-guide terminology) as a frontliner, Liyuan as illusion-focused, Lonely Cloud as a precision-dueling choice, Drunken Flowers as intrigue and social play, Wenjin Pavilion as investigation-focused, and Mohist Hill as associated with building. These are interpretive descriptions; they do not establish that every faction is currently joinable in every region or that any is mechanically best.
How do you join a sect?
A guide reports that the sect system opens at Level 10. Joining is optional. The general flow it describes is:
- Reach Level 10, then open the in-game Sects menu.
- Select a sect and choose its Entry Clue to see the current hint.
- Follow the map clue to the indicated NPC or elder.
- Complete that sect’s initiation quest or trial. The task differs by faction; no single trial is universal.
The guide says the welcome gift includes the sect’s signature Martial Art and a matching weapon. Use the live menu to confirm what is offered and what the chosen sect currently requires.

Yes. Sectless play is a reasonable choice if you do not want faction-specific obligations or penalties. According to the cited guide, you give up sect shops and exclusive cosmetics, but can still earn reputation. It also says Skill Theft can provide sect Martial Arts without membership, though some arts may take more effort to obtain that way.

How do sects differ from guilds?
A sect is an individual faction and progression membership. A guild is a player organization. Guild Order’s guide says a character can participate in both independently, so choosing to remain sectless does not mean you must avoid guilds.
Why should you check your current version and region?
Sect rosters and joinability change as the game expands, and guide terminology can differ. Dexerto’s April 2, 2026 guide lists 11 sects but cautions that some were not joinable in the Global version at its publication. Guild Order likewise notes that the roster grows with expansions and recommends checking the relevant version.
Raging Tides illustrates why an old route should not be treated as a timeless requirement. A guide reports that it became joinable in Global Version 1.5 on April 2, 2026, after Level 10, and describes three alternative eligibility routes: a Northern Vow memorial and nine-wine trial, a Liangzhou gourd encounter, or a 100-jars condition. It also reports a weekly requirement. These details are guide-reported rather than an official patch record, and do not prove availability in every current region or build. Use the current Sect clue to confirm what applies to your character.
