For a self-hosted Discord bot, start with Docker. Muse is the clearest fit for music, BoneBot offers modular features through Docker Compose, Modmail and Ticketsbot focus on staff support, and Red-DiscordBot provides a broad cog-based system through community-maintained images. In every case, the program runs on your machine but still connects to Discord through a bot application and token created in the Discord Developer Portal.
The projects below are the strongest candidates identified for this use case as of October 2026. Release activity, current installation commands and some licence details were not established in the available project summaries, so check each project’s current documentation, releases and repository activity before deploying it on a production server.

Self-hosting moves the bot’s software and data onto a computer you control: a home server, NAS, virtual machine or rented VPS. It does not create a separate Discord service. The bot still signs in to Discord’s API with a bot user and token generated for an application in the Discord Developer Portal.
Your server must therefore remain online, maintain an outbound internet connection and keep the bot process running. If the machine is shut down, the bot appears offline. Discord remains responsible for message delivery and API access; your server is responsible for the code, storage, updates, logs, backups and secrets.

Detailed picks
Muse: the focused music option
Muse is described as a self-hosted midwestern Discord music bot. Its documentation summary recommends Docker, while also listing Node.js as an alternative and a container image distributed through the GitHub Container Registry (GHCR). That makes it the most straightforward candidate when music playback is the primary requirement and you prefer an isolated container over a local Node.js installation.
- Choose it when: music is the main feature and you want a relatively focused service.
- Deployment trade-off: Docker reduces host-level dependency management; Node.js may suit an administrator already operating a Node stack.
- Verify first: the current image reference, supported Discord permissions, audio-source policy, persistent-volume requirements and last release date were not established in the available material.
BoneBot: modular features with an explicit Compose file
BoneBot is presented as a modular bot that adds features to a server. Its cited setup starts with Docker Compose. You place the bot token in resources/config.txt and start the stack with docker compose up -d.
- Download the current BoneBot project files from its maintained distribution source.
- Open
resources/config.txtand set thebot-tokenvalue to the token generated for your Discord application. - Review the Compose file for volume mappings and any environment settings before starting it.
- Run
docker compose up -dfrom the directory containing the Compose file. - Inspect container logs and confirm that the bot appears online before configuring server-specific modules.
The available summary does not state BoneBot’s licence, minimum resources, release cadence or exact module list. Treat those as verification items rather than assumptions.

Red-DiscordBot: broad functionality through cogs
Red-DiscordBot uses a cog system, allowing administrators to enable modular commands and features. For Docker users, the commonly cited route is a community image rather than an image maintained by the Red project itself. Examples in the summaries include images associated with PhasecoreX and 4o66, along with other community publishers.
The PhasecoreX image is described as starting with one Docker command and updating to the latest PyPI release when the container restarts. The 4o66 image accepts the token as an environment variable, then stores it in settings.json; its documented model is one bot instance per container. Those behaviors are image-specific, so do not mix instructions between images.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Best fit: communities that want a large, configurable utility and moderation toolbox rather than a single-purpose bot.
- Operational risk: community images introduce an additional trust and maintenance boundary. Inspect the image publisher, Dockerfile, update history and volume behavior.
- Licence caution: GPL-3.0 appears in a third-party wrapper reference, but the official Red-DiscordBot licence was not verified in the available material.
Modmail: private staff conversations
Modmail is aimed at staff messaging: a user can contact a server’s team without exposing the conversation in a public channel, while staff handle the exchange inside Discord. A third-party roundup identifies an MIT licence.
No dependable installation sequence was available for this article. Before deploying, confirm how the current version stores conversations, which intents and permissions it requests, whether it supports Docker, and how staff access and transcripts are secured. An MIT label from a secondary source should also be checked against the project’s current licence file.

Ticketsbot: structured support queues
Ticketsbot is positioned for support tickets, where each request follows a channel or workflow that staff can claim, answer and close. A third-party roundup lists GPL-3.0.
As with Modmail, the exact current install procedure was not established. Verify the project’s supported runtime, database or volume requirements, permission model, transcript handling and release activity. Ticket data can contain personal information, so retention and backup choices matter as much as the bot’s commands.
Hardware and software requirements
These bots generally need little CPU or memory compared with a game server. The figures below are orientation points, not official requirements for every bot.
| Reference | CPU | Memory | Storage | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haven self-host guide | 1 vCPU | 512 MB RAM | 1 GB disk | A Docker-based self-hosted chat platform, not a Discord bot; lists Docker Engine 24+ and the Compose plugin. |
| Third-party Red-DiscordBot estimate | 0.1 vCPU minimum; 0.5 vCPU recommended | 256 MB minimum; 1 GB recommended | Not stated | An external estimate, not an official Red specification. |
For a small bot, a Linux machine with one available vCPU, 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM and a few gigabytes of free disk gives room for the container, logs and configuration. Leave additional space for databases, ticket transcripts, music caches or backups if the selected project uses them. Install Docker Engine 24 or newer and the Compose plugin when the project’s instructions require Compose; the Haven figures are a useful baseline, not a guarantee for BoneBot, Muse or Red-DiscordBot.

Prepare the Discord application safely
Create the bot user and token
- Open the Discord Developer Portal and create an application.
- Create or enable its bot user from the application’s Bot page.
- Generate the bot token and copy it directly into your secret-management method.
- Invite the bot to the target server with only the permissions and scopes the chosen project documents as necessary.
A third-party setup description reports that the token is shown once and that resetting it on the Bot page invalidates the old token. Because that behavior was not independently verified against Discord’s current portal documentation, treat the token as disposable but plan for rotation: if it is exposed, reset it immediately and update the container’s secret.
Enable only the intents the bot needs
Privileged intents control access to certain event data. One third-party Red-DiscordBot guide says Red needs Presence, Server Members and Message Content intents. That claim was not verified against Discord’s current policy or the current Red release, so use the bot’s present documentation and the Developer Portal’s intent descriptions as the authority. Enabling an intent without granting the corresponding permission, or granting a permission without enabling the intent, can leave a bot online but nonfunctional.
The same third-party guide says bots in 100 or more servers need verification. Treat that threshold as unverified and check Discord’s current verification rules before scaling beyond a small community.
Keep the token out of source control
- Do not commit a token to Git, paste it into a public issue or place it in a world-readable configuration file.
- Restrict permissions on files such as
resources/config.txtandsettings.json. - Prefer an environment file excluded from version control or the secret mechanism supported by your container runtime.
- Keep backups encrypted; a backup containing a bot token is another copy of the credential.
- Rotate the token after accidental disclosure and restart every instance using the old value.
A Docker-first deployment workflow
Docker is the default path cited for Muse and BoneBot and is also the common way to run community Red images. The exact image name, tag and volume paths change by project, so use the current project instructions for those values.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Provision the host. Use a supported Linux distribution or another Docker-compatible operating system, apply security updates and create a non-root administrative account.
- Install Docker. Install Docker Engine and, for Compose projects, the Compose plugin. Confirm the installation with
docker --versionanddocker compose version. - Create a private application directory. Keep the Compose file, environment file and persistent data in a directory readable only by administrators.
- Configure secrets and volumes. Add the token using the format required by the selected project. Map a persistent volume for settings, databases or transcripts so a container replacement does not erase configuration.
- Start the service. For BoneBot, the cited command is
docker compose up -dafter settingbot-tokeninresources/config.txt. Muse’s cited options are Docker or Node.js. Red images have image-specific commands. - Read the logs. Use the container or Compose logs to catch invalid tokens, missing intents, permission errors and failed dependencies. Do not publish logs if they echo secrets.
- Test in a private channel. Check login, a basic command, moderation or ticket permissions, persistence after restart and the bot’s response when it lacks a requested permission.
- Set restart behavior. Use the restart policy recommended by the project so a host reboot or transient failure does not leave the bot offline indefinitely.
- Document recovery. Record the image tag, configuration keys, volume locations, invite settings and token-rotation procedure in a private administrator document.
Choosing the right bot for your server
| Your priority | Most suitable candidate | Why | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Music only | Muse | Focused purpose with Docker recommended | Audio-source support, image freshness and data persistence |
| Many utility modules | Red-DiscordBot | Cog-based architecture and multiple community images | Image publisher, official licence, cog compatibility and update policy |
| Composable Docker configuration | BoneBot | Clear Compose workflow and editable configuration file | Available modules, config schema and current Compose requirements |
| Private staff contact | Modmail | Designed around staff messaging | Transcript storage, privacy controls and install instructions |
| Support queue | Ticketsbot | Designed around ticket workflows | Database needs, ticket retention and project activity |
If you need several unrelated functions, running one focused bot per job can make permissions and failure diagnosis clearer, but it also multiplies containers, tokens and update work. A single modular bot reduces the number of services to maintain at the cost of a larger permission and configuration surface.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Maintenance status was not established for any of the five candidates. Before selecting one, inspect its latest commit, release date, issue tracker, supported runtime and documented upgrade path. A project that works today but has no recent maintenance may fail after a Discord API change or dependency update.
Update safely
- Back up persistent volumes and configuration files.
- Read the project’s release notes for schema, permission or migration changes.
- Pull the new image or application version using the project’s documented method.
- Recreate the container while preserving its volumes.
- Test login, commands, intents and staff workflows before announcing the update.
For the PhasecoreX Red image, the summary says a restart updates to the latest PyPI release. Automatic movement to a latest release can reduce manual work but also removes the predictability of a pinned version. Consider pinning a known-good tag when the image supports it, and schedule updates after a backup.
Common symptoms and fixes
- Bot is offline: confirm the host and container are running, then inspect logs for a rejected or reset token.
- Bot is online but ignores messages: check enabled intents, channel visibility and the bot’s role permissions.
- Commands fail with permission errors: compare the command’s required permissions with the invite and channel overrides; avoid granting Administrator as a shortcut.
- Settings disappear after a restart: verify that the project’s data directory is mapped to a persistent volume rather than remaining only inside the container.
- One Red image behaves differently from another: follow that image publisher’s instructions. The PhasecoreX and 4o66 summaries describe different token and update behaviors.
- Container repeatedly exits: check configuration syntax, runtime versions, missing environment variables, disk space and the first error in the logs before changing permissions.
Do you actually want to self-host Discord itself?
A bot running on your server is not the same as running a Discord-compatible chat service. If your goal is to host the entire community platform, a 2026 roundup identifies Spacebar and Stoat (formerly Revolt) as self-hosted alternatives. Spacebar is described as a project intended to let real Discord bots and clients operate against your own server, while Stoat is described as the closer Discord-style interface with a bot API. Haven is another self-hosted Discord alternative with a Docker guide.
Those projects replace or emulate the chat platform; Muse, BoneBot, Red-DiscordBot, Modmail and Ticketsbot remain bots that connect to Discord’s service. Choose the platform route only if you are prepared to operate the gateway, database, user accounts, upgrades and moderation systems of an entire chat service.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Final decision checklist
- Is your primary need music, modular utilities, staff messaging or tickets?
- Does the project publish current installation instructions and releases?
- Is the image official, or community maintained?
- Have you verified the licence in the project’s own repository?
- Can your host provide continuous uptime, backups and enough disk for logs or transcripts?
- Have you created a separate bot token, enabled only required intents and limited permissions?
- Can another administrator restore the container and rotate the token if you are unavailable?
For most administrators, the practical starting point is a Docker deployment: Muse for music, BoneBot for a Compose-managed modular bot, Red-DiscordBot when a cog ecosystem is worth the extra image scrutiny, Modmail for private staff conversations, and Ticketsbot for ticket queues. Treat those as starting points, not permanent endorsements: verify maintenance, licences and current commands immediately before production use.
