Best VPS Hosting for WooCommerce Stores in 2026

A practical 2026 guide to choosing VPS hosting for WooCommerce: current software requirements, 2-vCPU/4-GB sizing, PHP workers, object caching, provider candidates and checkout testing.

The best WooCommerce VPS in 2026 is not the cheapest plan; it is the smallest server that meets WooCommerce’s current software baseline and still has CPU, memory, PHP workers and database capacity left for checkout traffic. Start with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM for a small store, then move to 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM as traffic and concurrent administration become steady. Require PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or newer, HTTPS and at least a 256 MB WordPress/PHP memory limit.

No independent benchmark in the available evidence ranks VPS companies by checkout speed. The providers below are candidates to test, not a verified league table. Confirm the actual plan, software versions, worker allowance, object-cache option and performance on a staging copy before moving a live shop.

What a WooCommerce VPS must provide in 2026

WooCommerce runs inside WordPress, so every product page, cart operation, customer account action and payment attempt consumes PHP and database resources. A VPS gives you reserved virtual CPU, memory and storage, but it does not automatically make a store fast. The useful question is whether the plan can run the current software stack while handling uncached requests during a sale.

Current official software baseline

WooCommerce’s server recommendations specify the following baseline. The page lists PHP 8.3 or newer and says that releases up to PHP 8.4 are tested; it lists MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.6 or newer; it requires HTTPS; and it calls for a WordPress memory limit of at least 256 MB. It also lists WordPress 6.9 or newer. Treat those figures as the compatibility floor, not as a performance target.

Component 2026 baseline How to interpret it
PHP 8.3 or newer; tested up to 8.4 Confirm the host lets you select a supported minor version and change it without rebuilding the server.
Database MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.6+ Ask which engine and exact version the image uses. A legacy image can leave you below the recommended baseline.
WordPress 6.9 or newer Keep WordPress, WooCommerce and extensions patched together on staging first.
Memory At least 256 MB WordPress memory limit This is a floor for PHP requests. Page builders, payment extensions and imports can need more.
Transport security HTTPS Use TLS for the storefront, checkout, administrator and webhooks.

The same documentation still shows a legacy fallback of PHP 7.4+, MySQL 5.6+ or MariaDB 10.4+. Those versions are not a sensible target for a new 2026 deployment. A host that still defaults to MySQL 5.6 or MariaDB 10.4 should be treated as a warning sign unless it offers a straightforward upgrade path.

Memory guidance is not a single magic number

Secondary hosting guidance commonly treats 256 MB as the minimum and suggests 512 MB for busy stores. Another guide attributes approximate WordPress defaults of 40 MB for front-end requests and 256 MB for administration; that attribution is not independently confirmed, so use it only as an illustration of why a complex store can exhaust a low limit quickly. WooCommerce, a visual builder, analytics, search, subscriptions and payment plugins all compete for the same PHP memory.

How much CPU and RAM does WooCommerce need?

A practical starting point is 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM. That gives PHP workers, the database, web-server processes and the operating system room to coexist without immediately swapping. For a shop with steady traffic, frequent administrator activity or larger catalogs, plan on 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM and scale again only after observing real resource usage.

Store situation Starting allocation What to watch
Development, very small catalog or low traffic 2 vCPU / 4 GB RAM PHP memory exhaustion, swap use and database CPU during imports or promotions.
Growing store with regular orders 4 vCPU / 8 GB RAM Concurrent checkout requests, administrator jobs, scheduled tasks and object-cache hit rate.
High traffic or heavy catalog operations 8 GB RAM or more, with additional vCPU as monitoring shows demand Queueing, database latency, disk I/O and whether a single VPS remains an appropriate architecture.

Vendor sizing guides differ: one commonly cited model uses 2 GB and 2 cores for a small shop, 4 GB and 4 cores for a growing shop, and 8 GB or more with 8 or more cores for high traffic. Other guides put 4 GB at the general WooCommerce minimum. Because these are secondary recommendations rather than an official WooCommerce sizing chart, use the 2-vCPU/4-GB and 4-vCPU/8-GB tiers as working starting points and validate them with load tests.

Why checkout speed depends on more than a CDN

Product and category pages can often be served from a full-page cache. Cart, checkout and my-account pages normally cannot be served that way because they contain session-specific prices, shipping, tax and customer data. During a sale, those requests execute PHP and query the database. A CDN can deliver static files quickly, but it cannot replace PHP workers, database capacity or a persistent object cache for these dynamic operations.

The four resources that matter most

  • PHP workers: each worker handles a request. Too few workers make checkout requests wait even when CPU is not saturated.
  • Persistent object cache: an in-memory cache reduces repeated database work for options, products and sessions. Verify whether the VPS includes one or whether you must operate it yourself.
  • NVMe or equivalent fast storage: faster storage helps database reads, writes, logs and backups, especially when a catalog or order table grows.
  • CPU and RAM headroom: leave capacity for payment callbacks, cron jobs, imports, image processing and administrator activity at the same time as customer traffic.

Enable OPcache when running PHP 8.3 or newer. It keeps compiled PHP bytecode in memory and avoids recompiling scripts for every request. Confirm the cache is enabled after PHP upgrades, because a new PHP-FPM pool can have different settings.

PHP-worker allowances

One hosting-vendor table describes approximately 2–6 workers on a shared pool, 15 or more on a guaranteed pool and 30 or more on a dedicated pool. Those figures are vendor guidance, not an independent benchmark. Ask the provider for the actual PHP-FPM process limit, whether it is shared with other customers, and what happens when all workers are busy. A plan advertising many vCPUs but only a small worker pool can still queue checkouts.

VPS candidates to investigate

The following figures come from provider reviews and search snippets rather than independently verified tests. Prices were not verified by the providers and can change; one cited review was about 250 days old. Use the table to create a shortlist, then confirm the current offer directly before buying.

Candidate Indicative price and resources Important qualifications
Hetzner Cloud About €5.49 per month; 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe A review recommends it for European sites. PHP-worker allowance, object cache and load-test results were not stated.
DigitalOcean About $12 per month; 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD Managed MySQL is available as an add-on. The cited 2 GB plan is below the 4 GB working recommendation for most stores.
ScalaHosting About $11–$15 per month; entry plan around 2 GB RAM and 2 cores That entry allocation may require an upgrade for WooCommerce with plugins or regular traffic. Storage, worker limits and object cache were not stated.
Kinsta Price and allocation not stated in the evidence A managed-hosting review reports that it handles uncached WooCommerce requests well. Confirm the current plan’s limits and included services.
WP Engine Managed plans reported at $25 or more per month A review recommends it for managed, high-traffic WooCommerce. Exact CPU, RAM, worker and cache limits were not stated.

There is no defensible “number one” in this list without comparable checkout tests. A lower monthly price can be attractive if you are comfortable administering Linux, PHP, the database, security updates and backups. A managed plan can cost more while reducing that operational work, but you still need to verify its WooCommerce-specific limits.

Unmanaged VPS or managed WooCommerce hosting?

Decision factor Unmanaged VPS Managed WooCommerce service
Server control Full control over OS, web server, PHP, database and caching. Provider controls more of the stack and may restrict versions or extensions.
Maintenance You apply security patches, tune services, rotate credentials and recover failures. The provider usually handles more routine platform work; confirm exactly what is covered.
Scaling You resize the VPS or build a multi-server design. Scaling paths may be simpler, but resource ceilings and migration rules vary.
Cost pattern Lower infrastructure price, higher value of your own administration time. Higher recurring price in exchange for support and managed operations.
Best fit An owner or team comfortable with Linux and incident response. A store where predictable support and reduced maintenance matter more than root access.

Choose an unmanaged VPS when you can maintain the stack and have a tested backup-and-restore procedure. Choose managed hosting when a failed upgrade, database issue or security incident would cost more than the management premium. Neither model removes the need to test checkout and extensions on staging.

How to deploy a WooCommerce VPS safely

  1. Measure the store before choosing a plan. Record monthly orders, peak simultaneous visitors, catalog size, scheduled imports, payment methods, search features and the number of administrator users. Note any extension that performs heavy background work.
  2. Select a region close to customers and payment services. Geographic distance affects network latency. Keep the ability to resize the server without changing the public hostname if possible.
  3. Install a supported operating-system image and software stack. Confirm PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or newer, WordPress 6.9 or newer and HTTPS before importing the store. Do not rely on an image’s marketing label; inspect the installed versions.
  4. Set the memory limit deliberately. Ensure WordPress can use at least 256 MB, then raise it only when the available RAM and application behavior justify it. A higher PHP limit cannot compensate for insufficient physical memory.
  5. Configure PHP-FPM and OPcache. Set a worker ceiling that matches the plan’s CPU and RAM, enable OPcache, and monitor busy workers, request queueing and slow requests. Increasing workers beyond available memory can make the server less stable.
  6. Add a persistent object cache. Use the cache technology supported by the host and plugin stack, protect it from public access, and verify that cache invalidation works when products, prices or stock change.
  7. Separate scheduled work from checkout where possible. Stagger imports, backups, image generation and other cron tasks so they do not compete with the busiest sales period. Check that payment webhooks and order-status jobs still run on time.
  8. Secure the server and store. Enforce HTTPS, use unique administrator credentials and least-privilege accounts, restrict database access, apply security updates, and keep off-server backups of files and the database.
  9. Clone to staging and test extensions. Reproduce a representative catalog, taxes, shipping rules, coupons, stock changes and payment flow. Test both guest and logged-in checkout, including failed and retried payments.
  10. Load-test before DNS cutover. Generate realistic browse-to-cart sessions and concurrent checkouts on staging. Record response time, error rate, PHP worker saturation, database CPU, memory, disk I/O and cache hit rate. There is no published cross-provider checkout benchmark to use as a substitute for this test.
  11. Cut over with a rollback plan. Lower DNS time-to-live ahead of migration, freeze writes during the final database copy, verify orders and webhooks, and keep the previous environment available until the new server has passed a full business cycle.

Common VPS mistakes and fixes

Choosing a 2 GB plan because the storefront looks small

A small catalog can still have expensive plugins, administrator tasks and payment callbacks. If memory pressure causes swapping or PHP out-of-memory errors, move to at least the 4 GB starting tier before tuning individual plugins.

Running an outdated database

MySQL 5.6 and MariaDB 10.4 appear in legacy guidance, but they are below the current WooCommerce baseline. Migrate to MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6+ in staging, test extensions and confirm backup restoration before production.

Assuming “dedicated resources” means unlimited concurrency

Reserved CPU and RAM do not tell you the PHP-FPM process limit, database connection limit or disk throughput. Ask for those limits and observe them under a realistic test.

Skipping backup restoration tests

A backup that cannot be restored is not a recovery plan. Perform a complete restore on an isolated environment, verify media and order data, and document the time required.

Ignoring background jobs

Product imports, subscription renewals, email queues and image processing can consume the same workers and database used by customers. Schedule them away from peak periods and monitor delayed jobs.

A practical buying checklist

  • PHP 8.3+ selectable now, with a documented upgrade path.
  • MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.6+; no legacy default that leaves the store below baseline.
  • At least 256 MB WordPress/PHP memory, with enough physical RAM to avoid swapping.
  • 2 vCPU/4 GB RAM as the starting point, or 4 vCPU/8 GB for established traffic.
  • NVMe or similarly fast storage sized for WordPress, media, backups and database growth.
  • Published PHP-worker limits and an explanation of whether workers are shared or guaranteed.
  • Persistent object-cache support and OPcache availability.
  • HTTPS certificates, firewall controls, monitoring and off-server backups.
  • A staging environment where you can load-test checkout and payment callbacks.
  • A clear resize, migration and support process for incidents.

Verdict

For most new WooCommerce VPS deployments in 2026, begin with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM and insist on PHP 8.3+, MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6+, HTTPS and a 256 MB or larger memory limit. Move to 4 vCPU and 8 GB when traffic, catalog work or concurrent administration becomes steady. Evaluate Hetzner Cloud, DigitalOcean and ScalaHosting as infrastructure candidates, or compare managed services such as Kinsta and WP Engine when you prefer outsourced operations—but treat every price and capability in the candidate table as provisional. The deciding evidence should be your own staging checkout test, including PHP-worker behavior, object-cache performance, database latency and recovery procedures.
