Activepieces is the closest general self-hosted replacement for n8n on a VPS. Choose it if you want a familiar visual workflow canvas. Choose Windmill for Python or TypeScript scripts and internal tools, Node-RED for lightweight event-driven or IoT flows, Kestra for declarative data pipelines, Huginn for web-monitoring agents, and Automatisch for a more Zapier-like experience.
The right choice depends less on a supposed “best” product than on workflow style, licensing, database needs, connector coverage, operations, and how much rebuilding you can tolerate. None of these alternatives is established by the available comparisons as universally faster or more memory-efficient than the others.

Quick comparison
The table below maps each candidate to the job it is best suited to. “Closest to n8n” means a visual, node-based experience for ordinary app-to-app workflows, not identical compatibility with n8n exports.
| Platform | Best fit | Authoring style | VPS and operations profile | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Activepieces | General-purpose visual automation | Canvas-first workflow builder | Docker-oriented self-hosting; plan for persistent data, backups and connector credentials | Frequently described as the closest general n8n replacement. The core is described as MIT-licensed, but verify the current edition boundaries and license text. |
| Windmill | Engineering teams building scripts and internal tools | Code-first, especially Python and TypeScript | More suitable when your team already operates source-controlled code and services | Sources describe AGPLv3 source code and separate Community Edition distinctions. Confirm the current official terms before redistribution or commercial use. |
| Node-RED | Lightweight event-driven and IoT automation | Flow editor built around events and messages | Often selected for a small VPS; SSDNODES describes a deployment that does not need a database, subject to verification for your chosen version | Its strengths are simplicity and event handling rather than broad enterprise orchestration. |
| Kestra | Data pipelines and orchestration | Declarative workflow definitions | Plan for pipeline state, logs, scheduling and the storage components required by your installation | Better aligned with structured pipelines than with a simple Zapier-style connector canvas. |
| Huginn | Monitoring websites, feeds and other signals | Programmable agents | Useful when the main job is watching, filtering and reacting to external changes | Narrower than a general connector platform; choose it for agent-style monitoring. |
| Automatisch | Self-hosted automation with a Zapier-like feel | Visual, connector-oriented workflows | Use the project’s current deployment guidance and size the VPS for your flow volume | The comparisons provide less technical detail than for Activepieces, Windmill or Node-RED. |
Activepieces: the closest visual replacement
Activepieces is the default recommendation when your mental model is “n8n, but self-hosted under a different project.” AppsGit’s October 6, 2026 roundup calls it the best general open-source alternative, and SSDNODES’ October 11, 2026 comparison describes it as the closest replacement for typical n8n use. That makes it the most natural first evaluation for marketing automations, notifications, form processing and ordinary app-to-app flows.

When Activepieces fits
- You want to draw a workflow on a canvas instead of writing most logic as a program.
- Your workflows combine triggers, transformations and service connectors in a way that resembles ordinary n8n use.
- You want a broad general-purpose tool rather than a product optimized for IoT, data engineering or web surveillance.
What to verify before deployment
The comparisons identify an MIT-licensed core, but license scope and edition boundaries can change. Read the project’s current license and edition documentation before redistributing a hosted instance, offering it to customers or embedding it in a commercial product. Also check that every connector you rely on is available in the edition you intend to run; “visual replacement” does not guarantee one-for-one node coverage.
Windmill: code-first Python and TypeScript automation
Windmill is the strongest choice when your team would rather maintain Python or TypeScript scripts than assemble a large canvas. AppsGit, Jacar and StackPicks all distinguish it from canvas-first tools on that basis. It is suited to internal tools, scheduled jobs, API endpoints and workflows where business logic belongs in source-controlled code.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchChoose Windmill when
- Developers need Python or TypeScript as the primary authoring language.
- Code review, testing, reusable functions and a normal software-development workflow matter more than visual editing.
- You are building internal tools that expose scripts or services to colleagues, not only connecting SaaS applications.
Trade-offs on a VPS
A code-first platform shifts effort from drawing nodes to managing repositories, dependencies, runtime versions and permissions. Plan for the same operational basics as any service: persistent storage, secrets, logs, backups and a rollback path. Jacar describes AGPLv3 source code and a separate Community Edition distinction. Because those terms can vary by edition, consult the current official license documentation for the exact rights attached to the components you deploy.
Node-RED: a lightweight event-driven option
Node-RED is the practical shortlist choice for small, event-driven systems, especially IoT. Its flow model is built around messages and events, so it works well when sensors, webhooks, queues or device signals trigger a chain of actions. SSDNODES characterizes it as the small option that needs no database, which can simplify a modest VPS; verify that claim against the current deployment documentation and the version you select.
Good use cases
- Home, laboratory or industrial prototypes that react to device events.
- Webhook and message-routing flows where low operational overhead is more important than a large connector catalog.
- Small services for which adding a separate database would create unnecessary maintenance.
Where it is not the obvious choice
If you need a large library of polished business-app integrations, complex data-pipeline scheduling or a code-first internal-tool platform, another candidate may fit better. “Lightweight” describes the operational shape, not a universal performance ranking; no common independent benchmark establishes Node-RED as the fastest or lowest-memory option.

Kestra: declarative pipelines and orchestration
Kestra belongs on the shortlist when the problem is a data pipeline or orchestration system rather than a sequence of SaaS actions. The 2026 alternative lists position it around declarative workflows, making the pipeline definition itself a durable, reviewable artifact.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use Kestra for structured pipeline work
- Scheduled extraction, transformation and loading jobs.
- Multi-step processes where dependencies, retries, schedules and execution history need to be explicit.
- Teams that prefer declaring workflow structure and letting an orchestrator run it.
Before provisioning a small VPS, identify where Kestra will store execution state, logs and any artifacts. The available comparisons do not provide a common minimum CPU, RAM or storage figure, so size the host from your concurrency, retention and data-volume requirements rather than copying a generic number.
Huginn: agents that watch the web
Huginn is a narrower but useful answer to “what can watch for changes and react?” Its agent model is designed for monitoring websites, feeds and other signals, then filtering or transforming what it observes before taking an action.
Pick Huginn when monitoring is the product
- You need to detect changes on pages or feeds and trigger notifications.
- You want programmable agents with explicit watching, filtering and reaction stages.
- A general-purpose app connector canvas would add complexity to a monitoring-focused project.
Do not select Huginn merely because it is self-hosted. If your project is mainly a broad collection of business integrations, Activepieces or Automatisch will usually align more closely with that requirement.
Automatisch: a more Zapier-like self-hosted experience
Automatisch is the candidate to evaluate when you want the familiar shape of a hosted automation service while retaining control of the VPS. The sources include it among the principal self-hosted alternatives and describe it as more Zapier-like.

Questions to answer during evaluation
- Are the triggers and actions for your actual services available in the edition you will deploy?
- Can it receive webhooks through your reverse proxy and deliver outbound requests reliably?
- Does its current release provide the logging, retries and execution visibility your team needs?
The published comparisons contain less technical detail for Automatisch than for the three leading options, so treat a small proof of concept as essential before moving production flows.
How to choose between the six candidates
1. Start with the authoring model
Decide whether your team thinks in a canvas, source code, events, agents or declarative pipelines.
| If your workflow is mainly… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Visual app-to-app steps | Activepieces | Closest general match to the n8n canvas experience. |
| Python or TypeScript logic | Windmill | Code-first scripts and internal tools are the center of the product. |
| Device and message events | Node-RED | Lightweight event-driven flows are its defining use case. |
| Data movement and scheduled orchestration | Kestra | Declarative pipeline structure matters more than a connector canvas. |
| Website or feed surveillance | Huginn | Agents watch, filter and react to external changes. |
| General visual automation with a Zapier-like feel | Automatisch | Its positioning is closest to that interaction model. |
2. Check licensing before committing
License fit is a deployment requirement, not an afterthought. The comparisons describe n8n as using a Sustainable Use License rather than a conventional OSI-approved license, Activepieces as having an MIT-licensed core, and Windmill as having AGPLv3 source code with edition distinctions. Those labels do not by themselves answer every question about hosted use, modifications, plugins or redistribution. Read the current license files and edition terms for the exact release you plan to run, and ask legal counsel if you will sell access or bundle the software.
3. Match database and state requirements
Ask what must survive a container restart: workflow definitions, credentials, execution history, queues, schedules, logs and generated files. Node-RED is described by SSDNODES as not needing a database in its small deployment model, while the other platforms may require persistent services or storage depending on their current architecture. Do not infer database requirements from a product’s name or from another version’s setup guide.
4. Compare connector coverage, not marketing counts
List every trigger and action in your existing n8n instance, then check each candidate’s current connector or integration documentation. A platform can be the closest visual match and still lack one API your business depends on. For unsupported services, determine whether an HTTP request, webhook, SDK or custom script can fill the gap and who will maintain it.

5. Evaluate observability and recovery
For production use, you need to answer four questions before migration: Where do failed executions appear? Can you inspect input and output safely? How are retries and timeouts configured? How do you restore workflows and credentials after a host failure? A pleasant editor cannot compensate for missing operational answers.
6. Treat VPS operations as part of the product choice
Compare Docker support, CPU and RAM allocation, storage performance, backup tooling, scaling options, uptime history, support quality and data-center region. These factors affect reliability more than a small difference in editor features. Keep the software and host in the same decision record so that a “free” platform is not paired with an unsuitable VPS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVPS sizing: a starting point, not a promise
TechRadar Pro’s January 16, 2026 hosting guide gives 1 vCPU, 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of storage as a basic starting point for n8n. That figure is not a universal requirement for every alternative, and it is not a production guarantee. Your selected platform, execution concurrency, database, queue, log retention, webhook volume and backup policy can all change the requirement.
Use this sizing process
- Inventory executions. Count scheduled runs, webhook bursts, long-running jobs and simultaneous workflows.
- Separate application and data needs. Estimate space for the platform, database or state store, logs, temporary files and backups.
- Reserve headroom. Leave capacity for updates, retries and traffic spikes instead of sizing to an idle dashboard.
- Measure your proof of concept. Observe CPU, memory, storage latency and queue depth under a representative workload.
- Define a scaling trigger. Decide in advance when to increase the VPS, separate the database or add workers if the platform supports that model.
No common, independently measured benchmark for execution speed, memory use or throughput across these six tools is established in the cited comparisons. Do not publish or rely on a “fastest” or “lowest-RAM” winner without reproducible tests using your own workflows.

Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Write down the workflow inventory. Record triggers, credentials, schedules, external endpoints, data retention and acceptable downtime for every flow you intend to move.
- Select a VPS with the required controls. Confirm Docker or the project’s supported runtime, firewall access, static addressing if needed, snapshots or backup integration, monitoring and a region appropriate for your users and data.
- Install the supported release. Pin a documented version rather than silently tracking an untested latest image. Keep the deployment definition in a private, version-controlled location.
- Attach persistent storage. Place workflow definitions, state, credentials and logs on the storage mechanism required by the platform. A disposable container filesystem is not a backup.
- Protect secrets. Use the project’s supported secret configuration, restrict file permissions and avoid putting API keys directly into scripts or public repositories.
- Set up ingress and egress. Configure TLS and a reverse proxy for webhook endpoints, then test outbound calls to every service your flows need. Check firewall rules before debugging the application.
- Run a small pilot. Rebuild one representative workflow, including a failure path, retry behavior and a credential rotation test. Do not begin with the most business-critical flow.
- Schedule backups. Back up the application’s persistent data and any separate database or object storage. Keep at least one copy outside the VPS and record how to decrypt or restore it.
- Test restoration. Restore into an isolated instance, verify that workflows, schedules, credentials and webhook URLs behave as expected, and document the time required.
- Monitor before migration. Track host health, application errors, failed executions, storage growth and certificate expiry. Establish alert recipients and an on-call procedure.
Migrating from n8n: plan for a rebuild
The most important migration fact is negative: SSDNODES states that the listed alternatives do not read an n8n export. You should therefore expect to rebuild every flow by hand and re-enter every credential. This is a project plan, not a one-click import.
Prepare before switching
- Export or document each n8n workflow for reference, including node settings, expressions, schedules, webhooks and error branches.
- Create a credential register that identifies the service, permissions, owner, rotation date and environment. Never copy secret values into the register itself.
- Rank workflows by business impact and complexity. Move a low-risk flow first to validate the new platform’s connectors and operational model.
- Capture sample inputs and expected outputs so you can compare behavior after rebuilding.
Rebuild in controlled stages
- Recreate the trigger and confirm that it fires under the same conditions.
- Recreate authentication with least-privilege credentials and test a harmless read operation.
- Port transformations one at a time, translating expressions into the target’s syntax or into Python or TypeScript where appropriate.
- Implement retries, timeouts, idempotency and error notifications explicitly; do not assume equivalent defaults.
- Run the new flow in parallel where possible, compare outputs, then switch the production trigger during a defined maintenance window.
- Keep the original n8n workflow disabled but recoverable until the new flow has passed your agreed observation period.
Backups, updates and failure recovery
What to back up
Back up the platform’s persistent application data, its database or state store if separate, deployment configuration, custom scripts, certificates and a securely managed record of secret names and ownership. A database dump alone may not restore a complete installation if workflows or attachments live elsewhere.
How to update safely
- Read release notes for breaking changes, database migrations and license changes.
- Take a tested backup before changing the image or package.
- Apply the update to a staging or restored copy when the workflow is business-critical.
- Verify one trigger, one successful execution, one deliberate failure and one webhook after the update.
- Keep the previous image and configuration available for rollback until verification is complete.
Common symptoms and likely causes
| Symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| Webhooks never arrive | DNS, TLS certificate, reverse-proxy routing, firewall rules and the platform’s public URL setting. |
| Workflows disappear after a restart | Persistent-volume mounting and whether the application state was stored on ephemeral container storage. |
| Runs fail only during bursts | CPU and memory headroom, queue or worker limits, upstream rate limits and retry storms. |
| Credentials fail after migration | Manual re-entry, redirect URLs, scopes, environment variables and clock or timezone differences. |
| Logs consume the disk | Retention settings, rotation, failed-run volume and whether old logs are included in backups. |
Which option is closest to n8n?
For ordinary visual workflows, Activepieces is the clearest answer. It is the candidate repeatedly positioned as the nearest general match. That does not mean it imports n8n files, shares every node, or has identical execution semantics; the migration work remains manual.
Which is the lightest replacement?
Node-RED is the lightweight candidate in the comparisons, particularly for event-driven and IoT flows. SSDNODES describes a small deployment that does not need a database, but you should verify the requirement for your selected release and workload. No cross-platform benchmark supports a broader claim that it always uses the least RAM or runs the fastest.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- Have you chosen canvas, code, event, agent or pipeline authoring intentionally?
- Does the current license and edition permit your planned hosting and redistribution model?
- Are every required trigger, action, API and authentication method available?
- Do you know where state, credentials, logs and execution history persist?
- Can you expose secure webhooks and make required outbound connections from the VPS?
- Have you tested backups, restoration and rollback rather than merely scheduling them?
- Have you budgeted for manual workflow rebuilding and credential re-entry?
- Have you measured your own representative workload instead of trusting an unverified speed or memory ranking?
