NGINX owns public ports 80 and 443, accepts HTTP or HTTPS requests, and forwards them to Apache with proxy_pass. Apache continues to select sites with its normal name-based virtual hosts, but it is no longer competing for the same public listener.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This arrangement avoids the bind conflict that occurs when two daemons try to listen on the same IP address and port. It also lets you centralize TLS certificates, redirects, and edge logging in NGINX while retaining Apache-specific modules and application configuration behind it.

A TCP listener is identified by an address and port. Only one process can normally bind a particular combination, so NGINX and Apache cannot both own 0.0.0.0:80 or both own 0.0.0.0:443. Give each daemon a distinct endpoint instead:
| Layer | Address and port | Responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| NGINX | Public IPv4/IPv6 addresses on 80 and, for HTTPS, 443 | Accept connections, terminate TLS if selected, choose the upstream, and return the response |
| Apache | 127.0.0.1:8080 or another private address and free port |
Serve the application, process Apache modules, and select its backend virtual host |
The client sees NGINX as the web server. NGINX sends the request to the configured upstream, fetches Apache’s response, and sends that response back to the client. Apache does not need to be directly reachable from the Internet.

Choose the topology before changing configuration
Loopback binding
Binding Apache to 127.0.0.1:8080 keeps the backend reachable only from the same machine. This is the simplest and safest default when NGINX and Apache share one host. It also prevents an external client from bypassing NGINX’s TLS policy, access controls, and logging.
Separate private address
Use a private interface address instead of loopback when another trusted machine must reach Apache, or when the services are separated by a local network boundary. Restrict that address with the host firewall so only the NGINX address can connect. Do not bind Apache to every interface unless there is a deliberate reason and a firewall rule that prevents public access.
Decide where TLS ends
Most installations terminate TLS at NGINX. NGINX listens on 443 ssl, owns the certificate and key, and forwards ordinary HTTP over the loopback connection. If policy requires encryption on every hop, configure HTTPS between NGINX and Apache as well; that requires a separate upstream certificate and corresponding Apache TLS configuration.
Prepare the server
Check existing listeners
Before installing or editing either service, identify what already owns the web ports:
ss -ltnp
Look for listeners on ports 80 and 443 and for any existing Apache listener. Stop or reconfigure an existing service before asking the other daemon to claim the same endpoint. Record the hostnames that should reach each Apache site; those names must be consistent in DNS, NGINX server_name directives, and Apache ServerName or ServerAlias directives.
Install both services using the operating system’s packages
Use your distribution’s supported packages and service manager. Package names, configuration directories, and unit names differ between operating systems, so do not copy a directory path from another distribution without checking where that platform loads enabled sites. Install Apache first or NGINX first as convenient; the important part is that only one service is configured to listen publicly.
Reserve a backend port
Choose a free port, such as 8080, and decide whether Apache will bind to loopback or a private address. A port number is not a security boundary by itself: the address binding and firewall policy determine who can reach it. If another local application already uses 8080, select another free port and use that same value consistently in Apache and NGINX.

Move Apache to the backend listener
Change Apache’s Listen directive
Replace Apache’s public listener with an address and port reserved for the proxy. The effective configuration should contain a directive equivalent to:
Listen 127.0.0.1:8080
Remove or change conflicting Listen 80 and Listen 443 directives unless Apache is intentionally serving a separate, non-public endpoint. Leaving an old public listener enabled is a common reason the services still fail to start together.
Update every backend virtual host
Change each Apache virtual host to the same backend port. A minimal site might look like this:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
<VirtualHost 127.0.0.1:8080>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/example
ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/example-error.log
CustomLog /var/log/apache2/example-access.log combined
</VirtualHost>
The exact log and document-root paths depend on the operating system and application. Keep each site’s ServerName and ServerAlias values accurate; Apache still uses the HTTP Host header to select the correct site after it moves behind NGINX.
Preserve application-specific Apache modules
Moving the listener does not replace Apache modules, rewrite rules, directory permissions, or runtime settings. Keep the modules the application requires, but review any rule that assumes the client connects directly over HTTPS or that the server is listening on port 443. Those assumptions must be reconciled with the forwarded scheme described later.
Test Apache before involving NGINX
Run the platform’s Apache configuration test, commonly:
apachectl configtest
Then start or reload Apache through the operating system’s service manager and test the backend locally:

curl -I -H "Host: example.com" http://127.0.0.1:8080/
A response from the intended Apache virtual host proves that the backend listener, name matching, document root, and application are working independently of NGINX. If this request returns the wrong site, fix Apache’s virtual-host ordering or hostname declarations before adding proxy rules.
Configure NGINX as the public reverse proxy
Create one server block per hostname
NGINX should listen on port 80 for HTTP and route each hostname to Apache. A basic server block is:
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
location / {
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
}
proxy_pass names the backend and its port. The header directives preserve the original hostname, client address, proxy chain, and request scheme. Select the exact header policy deliberately: some applications need all four values, while others have their own trusted-proxy settings.
Understand the proxy path
With proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080; inside location /, NGINX forwards the requested URI to Apache. If you later add a path-specific location, check the trailing-slash behavior of proxy_pass; changing the URI portion can remove or replace a path prefix. Test application links, redirects, static assets, and form submissions rather than assuming that a path-based split behaves like a host-based split.
Keep hostname routing consistent
NGINX chooses a server block from the requested hostname. It then forwards the value in Host, allowing Apache to choose its own virtual host. A typo or missing alias at either layer can produce the default site even though both daemons are healthy. Add every public name to the appropriate NGINX server_name and Apache ServerName/ServerAlias list.
Add HTTPS at NGINX
Terminate TLS at the edge
For edge termination, configure a second NGINX server block that listens on 443 with SSL enabled and points to the certificate and key installed on the server:
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
ssl_certificate /etc/ssl/example.com/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /etc/ssl/example.com/privkey.pem;
location / {
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
}
Use the certificate paths actually installed on your system and protect the private key with the permissions required by NGINX. The upstream connection in this example is HTTP over loopback. If a local security policy requires end-to-end encryption, replace the upstream URL with HTTPS and configure Apache to present and validate the appropriate upstream certificate.

Redirect HTTP deliberately
If every request should use HTTPS, make the port-80 server block issue a redirect to the canonical HTTPS hostname. Test that redirect with both the bare domain and aliases. Do not create a redirect loop by making Apache believe that an HTTPS client arrived over HTTP; the forwarded scheme configuration below prevents that error.

Make the original scheme visible to Apache
NGINX sets X-Forwarded-Proto to the client-facing scheme. Configure Apache or the application to trust this header only when the request came from the NGINX address. Frameworks and rewrite rules that generate absolute URLs should use the forwarded HTTPS value; otherwise they may redirect an already-secure browser request back to HTTP or repeatedly redirect between schemes.
Forward client identity safely
At the backend, the network peer is NGINX, not the browser. The original address is therefore carried in headers:
Hostidentifies the public hostname and enables Apache name-based virtual-host selection.X-Real-IPcarries the address NGINX observed for the client.X-Forwarded-Forrecords the proxy chain and is useful for application logs and access controls.X-Forwarded-Protorecords whether the client used HTTP or HTTPS at the edge.
These headers are assertions unless the application knows which proxies it trusts. Configure Apache modules and the application to accept them only from NGINX’s loopback or private address. Never let an arbitrary public client supply a trusted client-IP or scheme header by reaching Apache directly.
Validate the complete chain
- Run
apachectl configtestand correct every syntax error. - Run
nginx -t; do not reload NGINX until it reports a valid configuration. - Reload or restart Apache using the operating system’s supported service command.
- Reload NGINX after its test succeeds.
- Run
ss -ltnpagain. NGINX should own public 80 and, when used, 443. Apache should own only its selected backend address and port. - Request the backend directly from the server with the correct
Hostheader. - Request the public HTTP and HTTPS URLs and verify the expected site, status code, redirect behavior, and application-generated links.
- Check both NGINX and Apache access/error logs while making a request so you can identify the first layer that rejects it.
A successful local Apache request combined with a failed public request points to NGINX routing, TLS, firewall, or DNS. A failed local request means the problem is still on the Apache or application side.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHost-based and path-based routing choices
Host-based routing
Host-based routing gives each domain or subdomain its own NGINX server block and Apache virtual host. It is usually the cleanest arrangement for independent sites because cookies, redirects, canonical URLs, and application assumptions remain scoped to a hostname.
Path-based routing
Path-based routing sends different URL prefixes to different Apache applications or backend ports. It can be useful for an API under /api/ and a web interface under /, but applications must understand that they are mounted below a prefix. Verify generated URLs, redirects, cookie paths, and static-file references. A backend that assumes it owns the root path may require an application base-URL setting or careful URI rewriting.

Do not turn Apache into an open forward proxy
Apache’s reverse-proxy mode makes it a gateway that appears to the client like an ordinary web server. The core reverse-proxy directives are ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse, but they are not required for the recommended NGINX-fronted design unless Apache itself must proxy another service.
ProxyRequests serves a different purpose: it enables forward-proxy behavior, in which clients ask Apache to fetch arbitrary destinations. Do not enable it casually. An unsecured open proxy can be abused to relay traffic, conceal attacks, or consume your bandwidth. If forward-proxy functionality is genuinely required, restrict clients, destinations, authentication, and logging as part of an intentional security design.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Checks and correction |
|---|---|---|
| Apache or NGINX will not start with an address-in-use error | Both daemons still claim the same address and port, or an old process is running | Use ss -ltnp, remove the conflicting Listen or listen directive, stop the stale service, and test configuration again. |
| NGINX returns 502 or 503 | Apache is stopped, listening on a different address or port, blocked by local policy, or refusing the request | Test curl against the backend address, compare it with proxy_pass, inspect Apache’s error log, and verify that the loopback or private firewall rule permits NGINX. |
| The wrong site appears | NGINX server_name, Apache ServerName/ServerAlias, or default virtual-host ordering is inconsistent |
Send an explicit Host header to Apache, verify the public hostname reaches the intended NGINX block, and remove accidental default-site matches. |
| HTTPS redirects loop | The application sees the backend HTTP connection and ignores the original HTTPS scheme | Forward X-Forwarded-Proto, configure the application to trust it only from NGINX, and check that HTTP-to-HTTPS rules run at the correct layer. |
| Logs show NGINX as every client | Apache or the application is recording the socket peer instead of the forwarded address | Configure trusted-proxy handling for X-Real-IP/X-Forwarded-For and ensure Apache is not accepting those headers from untrusted networks. |
| Static files or redirects contain the wrong path | A path-based proxy_pass URI changed the request prefix, or the application base URL is wrong |
Compare the requested and upstream URIs, test trailing-slash variants, and set the application’s external base path explicitly. |
| Only one hostname works | DNS, certificate names, or one of the two virtual-host lists is incomplete | Check each DNS record, include every name in the certificate and NGINX server_name, and add matching Apache aliases. |
Logging, reloads, and ongoing operation
Keep access and error logs at both layers. NGINX logs reveal which public server block handled a request, the upstream status, and proxy failures. Apache logs reveal virtual-host selection, application responses, and backend errors. Matching timestamps and request identifiers across the two layers makes it possible to tell whether a failure occurred before or after proxying.
Prefer graceful reloads after a successful syntax test so existing connections can finish. A configuration deployment should follow the same order every time: edit, run the Apache test if Apache changed, run nginx -t if NGINX changed, reload the affected service, then make a real HTTP and HTTPS request. Keep a known-good configuration available so a failed change can be reverted without guessing.
Monitor both listeners and the backend health. NGINX being reachable does not prove Apache is healthy; it may simply mean that the proxy is returning 502 or 503. Conversely, a healthy Apache backend does not prove that DNS, certificates, NGINX routing, or the public firewall are correct.
When a different design is better
| Design | Use it when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| NGINX in front of Apache | You need NGINX’s edge handling, centralized TLS, or routing while retaining Apache modules and virtual hosts | There are two configurations and two log layers to operate. |
| Apache as the public edge | Apache modules, .htaccess behavior, or application integration are the primary requirement and no NGINX-specific edge role is needed | You give up the split edge/backend arrangement and manage public TLS and routing in Apache. |
| NGINX only | The application does not require Apache-specific modules or configuration | Apache-dependent applications and directives must be migrated or replaced. |
| TLS termination at NGINX | You want one certificate and modern TLS policy at the public boundary | The NGINX-to-Apache hop is HTTP unless you add upstream HTTPS. |
| Re-encrypted upstream | Internal encryption is required by policy or threat model | You must issue, install, validate, and rotate a second certificate for Apache. |
Final deployment checklist
- NGINX is the only service exposed on public ports 80 and 443.
- Apache listens on a dedicated loopback or firewalled private address and port.
- Every NGINX
server_namehas matching Apache hostname declarations. - Each NGINX location uses the correct
proxy_passdestination. - Forwarded headers are present and trusted only from NGINX.
- Apache and NGINX configuration tests pass before reload.
- HTTP, HTTPS, redirects, static assets, forms, and application-generated URLs work through the public hostname.
- Both layers retain access and error logs, and the backend cannot be reached directly from the Internet.
With those conditions met, NGINX and Apache can share one server reliably without sharing one listener: NGINX owns the public edge, Apache serves the private backend, and the proxy boundary makes the division explicit.
