Ghost is the best self-hosted WordPress alternative for a publication, newsletter, or membership site; Drupal is the stronger choice for complex structured content and custom applications; Joomla is the practical middle ground for a conventional PHP CMS. The right decision depends less on the VPS brand than on your editorial workflow, data model, extension needs, and willingness to maintain Linux, the web server, the database, TLS certificates, backups, monitoring, and application updates.
A VPS gives you control, not a maintenance-free CMS. Moving away from WordPress can simplify one part of a site while making another part more specialized. Use the comparison below to choose the workload you actually want to operate.

That control is useful when a games publication needs custom infrastructure, direct database access, a private network, unusual integrations, or predictable resource allocation. It also means a failed certificate renewal, an unpatched PHP package, a full disk, or an untested backup is your problem to solve. A different CMS does not remove those duties; it changes the application-specific work and the skills your team needs.
The five comparisons that matter
- Publishing and newsletter workflow: How quickly can editors draft, schedule, publish, and distribute content?
- Structured content and permissions: Can you model reviews, platforms, characters, release dates, databases, or separate editorial roles without awkward workarounds?
- Extensions and themes: Are the modules, integrations, templates, and developer skills you need available and maintained?
- Runtime and database: What operating system, language runtime, database, memory, and web-server stack must you keep compatible?
- Operations: How much work do updates, backups, SSL, security monitoring, and recovery require?
Ghost, Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress at a glance
| Platform | Best fit | Documented self-hosted requirements | Operational character | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost | Publication, newsletter, membership, or paid-subscription product | Ubuntu 24; Node.js 22 LTS; MySQL 8.0; NGINX; Systemd; non-root Ghost user; at least 1 GB memory | Focused application with manual installation, weekly updates, SSL, backups, and server maintenance | Less suited to highly customized application behavior than a general-purpose CMS |
| Drupal | Complex content models, granular permissions, integrations, and custom applications | Apache, Nginx, or other supported servers; MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQLite; PHP 8.3 or higher; 64 MB minimum PHP memory for core | Deliberate, engineering-heavy maintenance; memory needs rise with modules and Composer work | More planning and specialist knowledge than a publication-first system |
| Joomla | General-purpose PHP sites wanting a traditional administration model | Version-specific PHP, database, and web-server requirements; verify the current Joomla technical requirements before deployment | Conventional PHP-CMS administration with version-dependent compatibility work | Exact support matrix changes, so a remembered requirement can be wrong |
| WordPress | Existing sites that depend on its ecosystem, plugins, or migration tooling | PHP 8.3 or greater; MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater; HTTPS; Apache or Nginx recommended | Broad ecosystem, but plugin, theme, PHP, database, and core updates all need a tested process | Switching only pays off when your present workflow or architecture is the problem |
The table describes documented baselines, not a promise that every site will perform the same way. Media, caches, search indexes, queues, analytics, and traffic can require more CPU, memory, storage, or separate services.
Ghost: the clearest publishing-first alternative
Why publication teams choose it
Ghost is open-source publishing software designed around professional publications. Its built-in feature set includes SEO controls, memberships, paid subscriptions, newsletters, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, and social metadata. Those features are part of the publishing product rather than a collection of unrelated add-ons, which can make an editorial workflow easier to reason about.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a games site, Ghost is a natural fit when the core output is articles, reviews, news posts, email editions, or a membership product. Editors can focus on writing and audience operations while developers maintain a comparatively focused application. It is less compelling when the site is primarily a highly relational database, a bespoke workflow application, or a large collection of non-editorial tools.
Documented VPS stack
Ghost documents a specific self-hosting stack: Ubuntu 24, Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, NGINX, and Systemd. Ghost commands should be run by a non-root user, and the documented minimum is 1 GB of memory. Treat those as compatibility requirements for a new deployment, not as a capacity plan for a busy site with image processing, search, or large subscriber activity.
A practical deployment sequence is:
- Provision an Ubuntu 24 VPS with at least 1 GB of memory and enough disk for the application, database, media, logs, and multiple backup generations.
- Create a non-root administrator account, apply operating-system updates, configure a firewall, and permit only the services you need.
- Install the supported Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, NGINX, and Systemd components.
- Install Ghost using its documented installer and run application commands as the dedicated Ghost user, not as root.
- Point DNS to the server, configure NGINX for the domain, and issue an SSL certificate before accepting production logins.
- Configure mail delivery, backups, and monitoring separately. Ghost notes that email, analytics, and CDN functions may require additional services.
- Publish a test article, subscribe a test address, restore a backup on a separate environment, and verify certificate renewal before launch.
The maintenance you accept
Ghost explicitly lists manual installation, weekly updates, server maintenance, SSL, and backups as part of self-hosting. “Weekly” is an operational expectation, not a guarantee that every update is safe to apply without testing. Keep a staging copy, record the current version, take a restorable database and media backup, apply the update, and check publishing, sign-in, subscriptions, and email afterward.
Self-hosting is best for teams comfortable managing servers and wanting full control over their environment. If your editors want the Ghost experience but nobody owns patching, backup verification, and incident response, a managed service is a different trade-off rather than a technical failure.

Ghost’s comparison material lists Ghost(Pro) from $15 per month and self-hosting from $10 per month before optional services. These are volatile starting figures, not a complete cost of ownership. A VPS, transactional email, backups, storage, monitoring, labor, and recovery testing can exceed the application figure. Confirm current regional pricing and included limits before budgeting.

What Ghost does not solve
A focused editor does not automatically provide every workflow a complex games database needs. If you require many custom entities, intricate role rules, or application-like behavior, forcing those requirements into a publication-first tool can create more bespoke code than choosing a general-purpose CMS at the outset.
Drupal: the strongest choice for structured content and custom applications
Where Drupal earns its complexity
Drupal is the broadest general-purpose option in this comparison. Its content modeling, permissions, and extension architecture suit sites that need more than a stream of posts. You can design structured entities and relationships for game entries, platforms, genres, review scores, release territories, editorial states, or partner data, then expose those structures through custom views and integrations.
That flexibility matters when several teams need different permissions, when content must feed an app or API, or when the website is one part of a larger publishing system. It also means more decisions about architecture, configuration management, dependencies, and upgrade testing.
Documented server and PHP requirements
Drupal’s official guide documents Apache, Nginx, and other supported web servers. It supports MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite database options. A core installation is about 100 MB before additional modules, themes, media, backups, and generated files.
The documented baseline is PHP 8.3 or higher with a minimum PHP memory setting of 64 MB for core. That minimum is not a sensible target for every production site: multiple modules, Composer operations, image handling, caches, and administrative tasks often need more memory. Size the VPS after profiling the actual module set and traffic pattern.
A safer Drupal deployment path
- Select a supported PHP 8.3-or-later environment and a database engine your team can patch and restore confidently.
- Choose Apache or Nginx, configure the document root and denied paths, and ensure the web process cannot write to files that should remain immutable.
- Install Drupal core and dependencies with the project’s supported dependency workflow, keeping development and production configuration separate.
- Set trusted host and environment settings, create least-privilege database credentials, and disable unnecessary services.
- Build content types, fields, roles, and workflows in a non-production environment before importing editorial data.
- Automate configuration export, database backups, media backups, and a restore test; a file copy alone is not a complete Drupal recovery.
- Run security updates in staging, review contributed-module advisories, deploy during a maintenance window, and inspect logs and critical user journeys.
Security and update reality
Drupal is not inherently easier to secure than WordPress. Its security outcome depends on supported PHP, current core and modules, safe permissions, server hardening, protected administrative accounts, and a tested recovery plan. Drupal’s web-server guidance, updated 13 September 2026, stresses following PHP security releases and upgrading or patching servers as needed. A team that already operates a disciplined patch process can use Drupal’s flexibility well; a team seeking “no maintenance” will not.
The trade-off
Drupal’s strength is also its cost: architecture and governance take time. A small publication that only needs articles, newsletters, and memberships may spend engineering effort on capabilities it never uses. Choose Drupal when structured data, permissions, integrations, or custom application behavior are requirements—not merely because it is powerful.
Joomla: a credible middle-ground PHP CMS
When Joomla makes sense
Joomla remains a general-purpose PHP CMS for teams that prefer a traditional web administration model. It can occupy the middle ground between a publication-first tool and a highly engineered content platform, especially when your team already knows its administration and extension patterns.

Use it when you need more general site-management flexibility than a focused publisher but do not want to design a deeply customized Drupal architecture. Validate that conclusion against the extensions, templates, integrations, and editorial permissions your site actually needs; a CMS’s reputation is not a substitute for checking those concrete requirements.
Do not freeze old requirements
The Joomla Project publishes technical requirements for supported web-server environments, but PHP, database, and web-server support change between Joomla versions. Select the exact Joomla release first, then check its current requirements page and support status before provisioning the VPS. Record the chosen versions in deployment documentation so a later administrator does not silently upgrade one component beyond the supported range.
Operational checklist
- Use a supported PHP version and database combination for the selected Joomla release.
- Apply operating-system, PHP, Joomla core, and extension updates on a staging copy first.
- Back up both database and uploaded files, and perform a real restore test.
- Use HTTPS, least-privilege accounts, strong administrator authentication, and a restricted administrative path where appropriate.
- Monitor disk space, failed logins, error logs, certificate expiry, and scheduled jobs.
Joomla is not automatically lower-maintenance than WordPress or Drupal. Its maintenance burden is determined by the version, extensions, hosting configuration, and competence of the team operating it.

An alternative should solve a defined problem, not simply be different. WordPress.org currently recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS; Apache or Nginx is recommended. Older PHP and MySQL releases are end-of-life and may expose a site to security vulnerabilities.
Those requirements are a useful baseline. If your existing VPS already meets them, moving to another PHP CMS will not automatically reduce operating-system, database, SSL, backup, or monitoring work. Migration can still be worthwhile when plugin sprawl, an unsuitable content model, editorial friction, or a need for a different application architecture is costing more than the move.
Questions to answer before migrating
- Which content must remain editable, and which can be exported as static or archived records?
- Which URLs, metadata, images, author identities, memberships, and email subscribers must be preserved?
- Which integrations depend on WordPress-specific plugins or APIs?
- Can the destination represent your content relationships without custom code that exceeds the original maintenance burden?
- Can you run both systems during a verification period and keep a rollback copy?
Choose by site type, not by a generic “best CMS” list
Publication, newsletter, or membership product
Choose Ghost when the site’s center of gravity is frequent publishing, email editions, memberships, or paid subscriptions. Its built-in publishing features reduce the number of separate components your editors must understand. Budget for the VPS and operational services, and assign ownership for weekly updates, SSL, backups, and incident response.
Structured games database or multi-team editorial system
Choose Drupal when game records, taxonomies, permissions, integrations, and custom workflows are more important than a minimal editor. Start with a content model and permission matrix before writing templates. If the model cannot be explained clearly, implementation will become expensive regardless of CMS.

Conventional company or community site
Consider Joomla when you want a familiar PHP administration model and a moderate level of general-purpose flexibility. Confirm the selected version’s requirements and extension support first; this is a deployment decision, not a permanent statement about every Joomla release.

Established WordPress site with valuable integrations
Stay with WordPress when its ecosystem, existing content, plugin integrations, or migration risk outweigh the original reason for switching. Upgrade its PHP and database stack to supported releases, remove abandoned extensions, and improve backups and staging before concluding that the CMS itself is the problem.
VPS operations every option still requires
Use this checklist regardless of CMS:
- Patch ownership: Assign a person or team to track operating-system, runtime, database, web-server, CMS, theme, and extension releases.
- Least privilege: Separate SSH, deployment, database, and application accounts; do not run application commands as root.
- HTTPS lifecycle: Automate certificate renewal and alert before expiry. Test renewal rather than assuming the scheduled job works.
- Backups: Keep independent database and file backups, retain multiple generations, encrypt off-server copies, and rehearse restoration.
- Monitoring: Alert on uptime, disk usage, memory pressure, certificate expiry, backup age, failed jobs, and unusual authentication activity.
- Staging: Reproduce production versions closely enough to test updates, imports, mail, caches, and critical editorial paths.
- Recovery: Document DNS changes, server recreation, database restoration, media restoration, secret rotation, and the person authorized to execute them.
- Capacity: Leave headroom for traffic spikes, image processing, database maintenance, logs, and at least one safe rollback.
Do not pick a speed winner from a marketing number
Response time depends on identical hardware, PHP or Node runtime settings, database indexes, cache configuration, media size, traffic mix, CDN behavior, and the exact page being measured. Ghost’s comparison page cites an independent claim of responses up to 1,900% faster than WordPress, but the underlying methodology is not established in the available source material. Treat that figure as a vendor-cited claim, not a universal benchmark.
If speed is decisive, run your own controlled test: use identical VPS resources, the same geographic region, representative content, equivalent cache states, realistic concurrent requests, and several repeated runs. Record uncached and cached results, error rates, CPU, memory, database load, and cache hit ratios. A faster home page is not a win if publishing, search, email, or administration becomes unreliable.

Self-hosting versus managed operation
Self-hosting maximizes direct control over files, databases, networking, and deployment. It is appropriate when your team can perform updates, backups, SSL management, monitoring, and recovery. The cost is staff time and the risk of an operational mistake.
Ghost documents Ghost(Pro) as its official managed service. Managed hosting trades direct server control for installation, updates, backups, SSL, support, and operational coverage. It can be the rational choice for a publication team whose advantage is editorial work rather than server administration. Compare the included limits, export options, integrations, support scope, and current price before committing.
A third option is a verified VPS operations or CMS-maintenance partner. If you use one, define who patches the host, who owns credentials, how backups are isolated, how quickly incidents are handled, and how you can leave. “Managed” is useful only when those responsibilities are explicit.
A practical selection process
- Write the workload: List publishing frequency, newsletters, memberships, structured entities, roles, integrations, search, media, and traffic patterns.
- Separate must-haves from preferences: A required permission model outranks a preferred editor theme; a required API outranks a familiar dashboard.
- Prototype the hardest content: Build one representative review, game record, author workflow, and integration in each serious candidate.
- Price operations, not just software: Include VPS capacity, email, storage, backups, monitoring, SSL support, labor, and recovery time.
- Test failure: Restore a backup, rotate a secret, renew a certificate, and roll back an update before launch.
- Choose an owner: The team accountable for weekly and emergency maintenance should approve the final platform.
For most self-managed publication VPSs, start with Ghost. For a structured games platform or custom application, start with Drupal. For a conventional PHP site that needs a middle-ground administration model, evaluate Joomla against its current version requirements. Keep WordPress when its ecosystem and existing investment remain the least risky solution.
