Manage development, staging, and production as explicitly selected Ansible inventory sources. Keep reusable role defaults separate from environment data, put machine exceptions in host_vars, encrypt secrets with Ansible Vault, and promote the same playbook through staging before a controlled production rollout.

Use an explicit inventory for every environment
Ansible does not know whether a play is intended for development, staging, or production unless your inventory and command make that distinction explicit. The safest baseline is one inventory source per environment, selected with -i:

ansible-playbook -i inventories/prod site.yml
A playbook should describe the desired state of a service, not contain a second copy of every environment’s host list and endpoint. The inventory supplies the hosts, groups, environment settings, and machine-specific values that the same roles consume.
Separate sources also make an operator’s intent visible in a command, a pull request, and a CI log. A correct playbook can still make a damaging change if the command points to the wrong inventory, so treat the inventory path as part of the deployment approval.

Can multiple inventory sources be combined?
Yes. Ansible accepts multiple inventory sources, but their hosts and variables are merged according to Ansible’s inventory rules. Combining sources can be useful for a static base inventory plus a dynamic source, yet it increases the chance that two groups or hosts define the same value. Use combined sources only when the merge is deliberate, documented, and inspected before deployment.
ansible-inventory -i inventories/prod -i inventories/cloud --graph
If two sources define overlapping names, do not assume the last file is an intentional override. Verify the resulting graph and effective variables, and set an explicit group priority where same-level groups must resolve predictably.
A repository layout that keeps boundaries visible
A practical layout is:
ansible/
site.yml
roles/
web/
database/
inventories/
dev/
hosts.yml
group_vars/
host_vars/
staging/
hosts.yml
group_vars/
host_vars/
prod/
hosts.yml
group_vars/
host_vars/
The directory names are a project convention; the important property is that each environment has an inventory source and its own variable directories. An inventory directory can contain the host definition plus the group_vars and host_vars associated with that source.
What belongs in each layer?
- Role defaults: safe, reusable defaults that should work across environments unless an environment intentionally changes them.
- Common variables: values shared by all environments, kept in a tightly controlled common location rather than copied into three inventories.
- Environment group variables: endpoints, instance sizes, feature flags, package channels, retention policies, and other settings that differ between development, staging, and production.
- Host variables: a machine’s address, disk path, hardware exception, service role, or other value that applies to one host rather than its whole group.
- Vault files: encrypted credentials, tokens, private keys, and other sensitive values, ideally separated by environment and by access boundary.
Do not copy a role’s entire default variable set into every inventory. Duplication makes a later role change behave differently in each environment and obscures which value is authoritative.
Separate inventories or one inventory with environment groups?
Both designs are supported. Choose based on who can access each environment, how automation is triggered, and how much overlap exists between host and group names.
| Decision axis | Separate inventory sources | One inventory with environment groups |
|---|---|---|
| Accidental targeting | The command names one environment directly; a wrong path remains possible but is easy to audit. | A broad inventory can expose every environment to one command, so host patterns and exclusions require extra care. |
| Secret-access boundaries | Development, staging, and production vault files can be protected and granted independently. | One repository or inventory may put unrelated encrypted data under the same operational boundary. |
| Variable collisions | Each environment has fewer same-name groups competing with one another. | Shared group names and nested environment groups can make overrides harder to reason about. |
| Promotion | Run the same playbook with a different, explicit -i value. |
Promotion changes the host pattern or group selection inside a larger inventory. |
| Dynamic inventory | Each source can wrap a separate dynamic plugin configuration or credential scope. | A single dynamic source can discover all environments, but filtering and permissions must be exact. |
| CI or automation-controller credentials | Jobs can be granted only the inventory and vault credentials they need. | One job definition may see more hosts and secrets unless access controls are carefully segmented. |
Separate directories are generally easier to review when production access is restricted. A single grouped inventory can be appropriate when discovery is centralized and access controls already enforce the environment boundary. Whichever model you choose, document the permitted command and the expected host pattern.

Understand how group_vars and host_vars resolve
Group variables express shared settings; host variables provide machine-specific overrides. Before a play runs, Ansible flattens the applicable variables onto each host. A task therefore sees one effective value, not a sequence of files, and the winning definition may be several directories away from the task that uses it.
Inventory precedence inside the group hierarchy
Within inventory data, values are evaluated from the broadest scope to the most specific:
all- A parent group
- A child group
- The individual host
A child-group value overrides its parent, and a host value overrides group values. When two groups at the same level define the same variable, the result can depend on load order. Set ansible_group_priority in the inventory source when one same-level group must win consistently.
all:
vars:
app_port: 8080
staging:
vars:
app_port: 8081
staging_canary:
vars:
ansible_group_priority: 50
app_port: 8082
hosts:
canary-01:
ansible_host: 10.20.4.12
The exact value of a priority is less important than making the intended ordering explicit. Do not use priority to hide duplicate definitions that should instead be removed.
Keep variable ownership deliberate
Place a value in the narrowest layer that accurately describes it. A production database endpoint belongs in production group variables, not in a role default. A single host’s unusual mount point belongs in that host’s variables, not in the entire web group. If the same key appears in several places, record which location is authoritative and why.
More specific variable sources override general ones. That is useful for exceptions, but it also explains the common “wrong variable” problem: a host variable or a more specific group value silently replaces the environment value you were looking at. Inspect the effective inventory instead of reading files in isolation.

Inspect the effective inventory before running a play
Make the resolved host and group structure a mandatory review step. The graph shows which hosts belong to which groups without changing anything:
ansible-inventory -i inventories/staging --graph
Use the same inventory path that the eventual playbook command will use. If you combine sources, include every source in this inspection command. For a machine-readable view suitable for troubleshooting or CI artifacts, request the inventory dump:
ansible-inventory -i inventories/staging --list
Compare the output with the change request: host count, group membership, environment endpoints, and any canary or exclusion group should all be present. This catches a wrong directory, a missing host file, and an unexpected group merge before a task can alter a machine.
Keep secrets encrypted, then handle them safely at runtime
Ansible Vault encrypts secret data at rest. It does not automatically protect a secret after Ansible decrypts it for a task. A password can still leak through task output, a verbose log, a generated file, a diff, or an automation system’s artifact.
Use environment-specific vaulted data
Keep non-secret environment settings in ordinary inventory variables and secret values in encrypted files:
inventories/
staging/
group_vars/
all.yml
vault.yml # encrypted
prod/
group_vars/
all.yml
vault.yml # encrypted with the production boundary
When access boundaries differ, use separate vault IDs or otherwise separate the encrypted files so a developer who can deploy staging does not automatically receive production credentials. The exact vault-ID naming is a team convention; the access policy is the important part.

ansible-vault create inventories/staging/group_vars/vault.yml
ansible-vault edit inventories/staging/group_vars/vault.yml
ansible-vault encrypt inventories/prod/group_vars/credentials.yml
Supply the appropriate vault credential only to the job or operator that is authorized for that environment. Never commit a vault password, private key, or unencrypted temporary copy to the repository.
Prevent exposure in tasks and diffs
Mark tasks that process credentials with no_log: true when their arguments or results could reveal secret material. Disable diff output on secret-bearing tasks:
- name: Install application credential
ansible.builtin.template:
src: app.env.j2
dest: /etc/myapp/app.env
mode: '0600'
no_log: true
diff: false
Use selective rather than blanket --diff. A broad diff can print the old and new contents of a sensitive file even when the task itself succeeds.
Validate in staging before production promotion
Promotion should change the inventory and approved environment data, not the playbook logic. The following sequence makes each decision visible:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Review the change. Confirm the role versions, target pattern, inventory path, vault ID, and any variable changes.
- Inspect the graph. Run
ansible-inventory -i inventories/staging --graphand verify the expected hosts and groups. - Check syntax. Parse the playbook against staging before contacting a host.
- Execute staging. Apply the change to staging, then verify service health with assertions or external probes.
- Simulate narrowly. Use check mode and a limited diff for modules that support them; scope the run to one safe host when practical.
- Promote the same code. Change only the inventory and approved production data, then repeat the inventory inspection.
- Roll out in batches. Start with a canary or small serial batch, run health checks, and stop or remediate when a check fails.
ansible-playbook -i inventories/staging site.yml --syntax-check
ansible-playbook -i inventories/staging site.yml --check --diff --limit one-host
ansible-playbook -i inventories/staging site.yml
ansible-playbook -i inventories/prod site.yml --limit canary --serial 10
Official Ansible guidance describes testing changes in staging before rolling them out in production as a good practice. Treat that as an execution gate, not merely an optional dry run.
What check mode can and cannot tell you
--check is a simulation. Modules that do not support check mode may skip or misrepresent their changes, and conditionals based on registered results can behave differently because the simulated task did not produce the same data as a real run. Pair check mode with an actual staging execution and post-change health checks.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
--syntax-check catches playbook parsing errors; it does not prove that a variable has the intended value, a credential works, a package exists in the repository, or a service will remain healthy. Those questions require inventory inspection and execution in a safe environment.
Use rolling batches and health gates in production
Running against every production host at once maximizes the blast radius of a bad variable, package, or template. Use serial to limit how many hosts are changed at a time:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- name: Roll out web configuration

ansible.builtin.uri:
url: http://127.0.0.1:8080/health
status_code: 200
register: health
failed_when: health.status != 200
Start with a named canary group or a very small batch, observe the service, and proceed only when the health assertion passes. A failed assertion should stop the rollout or trigger the documented remediation path; do not continue simply because the configuration task itself reported “changed” successfully.
Health checks should test the outcome users depend on: service readiness, a local endpoint, a process state, or a carefully scoped synthetic request. Keep checks deterministic and avoid embedding credentials in their output.
Make CI and automation controls reinforce the environment boundary
In CI or an automation controller, require the job definition to declare its inventory source rather than letting an operator type an arbitrary path at run time. Print the selected inventory path and commit identifier in the job log, but never print vault passwords or decrypted variables.
- Use separate credentials or vault IDs for development, staging, and production where access differs.
- Require a staging job to pass before the production job can run.
- Store the exact inventory path, limit, serial setting, and playbook revision as reviewable job inputs.
- Keep production jobs from inheriting development credentials, dynamic-inventory permissions, or broad host patterns.
- Archive the inventory graph and syntax-check result as non-secret audit evidence.
Dynamic inventory does not remove the need for an environment boundary. Its filtering rules and credentials must still make it impossible, or at least difficult and visible, for a staging job to discover production hosts.

| The play targets production during a staging change. | The command selected the wrong inventory source, or multiple sources were combined unintentionally. | Print and review the -i value, run ansible-inventory --graph with that exact source, and make the path a CI-visible input. |
| A task uses an unexpected endpoint or port. | A host variable or more specific group variable overrides the environment value. | Search for duplicate definitions, inspect the host’s group membership, and move the authoritative value to the appropriate layer. |
| Two sibling groups disagree about a key. | Same-level group collision resolved by load order. | Remove the duplicate or set ansible_group_priority in the inventory source, then document the reason. |
| A staging operator can read production secrets. | Secrets are held in one shared boundary or the same vault credential is used everywhere. | Separate encrypted files and vault IDs, and grant each job only the credential it needs. |
| A review log contains a password or private key. | Broad --diff, verbose output, or a task without no_log. |
Set no_log: true for secret-bearing tasks, set diff: false, and restrict diff to safe resources. |
| Check mode passed but the real rollout failed. | The module lacks complete check-mode support, or a conditional depended on data produced only during execution. | Run the change in staging, verify health, and treat check mode as one signal rather than a deployment proof. |
| A rolling deployment leaves unhealthy hosts in service. | No post-change health gate, or the batch size is too large to observe safely. | Add an assertion or probe after each batch, start with a canary, and stop on failure. |
A concise operating checklist
- Is development, staging, or production selected by an explicit inventory source?
- Does
ansible-inventory --graphshow only the intended hosts and groups? - Are reusable defaults separate from environment values and host exceptions?
- Have duplicate variable definitions and same-level group collisions been resolved?
- Are secrets encrypted, separated by access boundary, hidden from logs, and excluded from diffs?
- Has the exact playbook passed syntax validation and a staging execution?
- Was check mode used with an understanding of its unsupported modules and data-dependent conditionals?
- Will production use a canary or serial batch with a health check after each batch?
- Can the CI or automation-controller job prove which inventory, revision, credentials, and limit it used?
This arrangement keeps the playbook reusable while making the environment, variable source, secret boundary, and rollout risk explicit at every stage.
