Best Settings for a Modded Minecraft Server: A Measurement-First Guide

Start with view-distance 10, keep simulation-distance equal to or below it, allocate only the RAM your workload needs, and use Spark to find the real cause of modded-server lag.

The best settings for a modded Minecraft server are conservative distances, a heap size that leaves room for the operating system, and changes validated with profiling. Start with view-distance=10 as a reference baseline, keep simulation-distance equal to or slightly below it, then lower both when profiling shows tick or chunk-loading pressure. Allocate only the memory your workload needs, test JVM changes one at a time, and use Spark to identify the mod or activity actually consuming the tick budget.

What the important server settings actually control

Performance problems usually come from confusing the work performed by each setting. A modded server must advance game logic, load and generate chunks, run entities and automation, serialize data, and send chunks to players. The settings below affect different parts of that workload.

view-distance: chunks sent to clients

view-distance controls the radius of chunks the server sends to connected players. Increasing it gives players a larger visible world, but it also increases chunk loading, generation, memory pressure and network traffic, especially while several players explore in different directions.

Paper’s server-properties reference lists 10 as the default view-distance. Treat that value as a documented baseline, not as a guarantee that every modpack or machine can sustain it. Exploration-heavy packs may need a lower value; a lightly populated server with pre-generated terrain may tolerate more.

simulation-distance: actively ticking chunks

simulation-distance determines how far from each player the server actively simulates entities, block ticks, redstone, farms and other game systems. Lowering it can reduce CPU work even when the client still receives a wider visual area through view-distance.

Forge’s server guidance recommends keeping simulation distance equal to or marginally lower than view distance, then lowering both when profiling identifies pressure. Reducing simulation distance changes gameplay: farms outside the active area stop operating, mob activity changes, and redstone or automation located far from players may pause. Explain that behavior to players before applying a large reduction.

Memory and JVM arguments

Heap allocation is a ceiling, not a performance score. Giving Java every available gigabyte can starve the operating system, graphics drivers, file cache, monitoring tools and other services. Excessive heaps can also make garbage-collection pauses more disruptive.

There is no JVM flag string that is optimal for every loader, modpack, Java version and host. Forge specifically advises testing custom arguments before and after changing them. Keep the stock launch configuration unless a measured problem justifies a change, and change one variable at a time.

How much RAM does a modded Minecraft server need?

The correct amount depends on the pack, Minecraft and loader versions, online player count, exploration rate, chunk-generation workload and automation. A small pack with a few stationary players and a large pack with many dimensions can have very different live heaps. The evidence does not support one universal gigabyte recommendation.

A practical way to size the heap

  1. Start with a reasonable allocation recommended by the modpack author or launcher, while leaving substantial RAM for the operating system and any database, proxy, map renderer or backup process on the same machine.
  2. Record normal-play memory use with Spark. Include the busiest expected period rather than an empty server at startup.
  3. Watch heap occupancy, garbage-collection frequency and pause duration while players travel, generate chunks, use automation and run mob farms.
  4. If the heap repeatedly approaches its limit and collection is frequent, increase allocation modestly and repeat the same workload. If the server has plenty of unused heap but the machine swaps, stutters or shows CPU contention, reduce the allocation instead.
  5. Keep the change only when tick stability and pause behavior improve without starving other processes.

Do not interpret a high committed heap as proof that the server needs all of it; Java may reserve memory that is not actively used. Conversely, a server can have free heap while one mod or chunk-generation task consumes the 50-millisecond tick budget.

Separate heap pressure from total machine pressure

Track the host as well as Java. The operating system, storage cache, backup jobs, monitoring process and any proxy need memory outside the game heap. A machine can report free space inside Java while the host is paging or competing for CPU. That is why a memory change should be judged by tick timing, pause behavior and host responsiveness together, not by the heap number alone.

Recommended starting values for server.properties

Use these as a controlled starting point, then profile and adjust for your pack:

Property Starting approach What to watch Gameplay trade-off
view-distance 10 as the documented baseline; lower it if chunk loading or network work is high Chunk-send delays, generation spikes and client bandwidth Players see fewer distant chunks
simulation-distance Set equal to or slightly below view-distance; lower it when ticking is overloaded Tick time, entity and block-tick activity Remote farms, mobs and redstone may stop updating
Heap size Allocate only what the measured workload needs Heap occupancy, GC pauses and host memory pressure Too little causes collection pressure; too much can starve the host
JVM arguments Leave defaults unless a measured issue justifies a change Before/after tick time, pauses and memory behavior Untested flags can make performance or stability worse

Change properties while the server is stopped, keep a copy of the previous file, and restart before judging the result. Some launchers or hosting panels regenerate configuration files, so verify that your edit persists after restart.

Choose values by workload, not by player count alone

Two servers with the same number of players can need different settings. Four players spread across unexplored terrain create more chunk-generation work than eight players gathered in one established base. A dense technical area may stress block ticks and entities while a quiet survival world stresses almost nothing until exploration begins. Note where players spend time, how many dimensions are active, and whether the pack includes heavy world generation before deciding that a setting is too high.

Apply one distance change at a time when possible. For example, lower simulation distance first if Spark shows entity or block-tick pressure, then assess whether the gameplay impact is acceptable. Lower view distance when chunk sends, generation or bandwidth are the dominant costs. Keeping the two values close makes behavior easier to explain and avoids promising players active farms in chunks that are no longer simulated.

Measure before tuning with Spark

Spark is a profiler for Minecraft clients, servers and proxies. Its documented views cover CPU activity, heap and instance memory, garbage collection and server behavior. Install the build matching your exact Minecraft version and loader; a mismatched build can fail to load or provide misleading results.

Build a representative baseline

  1. Write down the Minecraft version, Forge, Fabric or NeoForge loader version, modpack release, Java version, allocated heap, hardware, player count and world age.
  2. Start the server and let startup settle. Do not use startup alone as your baseline.
  3. Run a repeatable workload: travel through unexplored terrain, generate chunks, operate the busiest automation, visit mob farms and reproduce the normal peak player period.
  4. Capture Spark data during each activity and note the clock time and player actions.
  5. Record tick time or TPS stability, chunk-loading responsiveness, heap occupancy and garbage-collection pauses.

A Minecraft server tick has a 50-millisecond budget. Spending more than that budget regularly produces slow ticks and falling effective TPS. Spark can show whether the time is concentrated in entities, block ticking, chunk generation, a mod subsystem or garbage collection. Diagnose that source before changing several unrelated settings.

Read the profile instead of guessing

  • Chunk generation dominates: reduce both distances temporarily, limit simultaneous exploration, pre-generate terrain where practical, and investigate world-generation mods.
  • Entities or block ticks dominate: inspect mob farms, item transport, contraptions, redstone clocks and machines near active players.
  • Garbage collection dominates: check heap sizing, allocation patterns and mods that create large numbers of short-lived objects; do not simply add memory without comparing pauses.
  • One mod or subsystem dominates: reproduce the issue, check its configuration and version, and update, reconfigure, replace or remove it only after confirming the profile.

Make profiling repeatable

Use the same route, farm, teleport points and player count for each comparison. Record when a profile starts and ends, because a five-minute travel test is not comparable with an idle period at spawn. If a problem appears only during a rare event, capture that event specifically rather than averaging it away. Save profile links or notes with the configuration used so you can identify which change produced an improvement or regression.

CPU, storage and network choices

After a reasonable heap allocation, fast CPU cores can matter more than additional RAM. Modded servers combine the core game tick with chunk generation, entity logic, automation and mod systems. Modern Minecraft is not purely single-threaded, so additional fast cores can help alongside a strong primary tick core, but adding memory will not repair a CPU-bound profile.

Match hardware to the actual workload: player count, how quickly players explore, the number of dimensions, world-generation complexity and automation density. A server that is smooth with four players in one base may struggle when eight players generate terrain in separate directions.

Use storage with consistent latency for world saves and backups. Network capacity matters when many players receive chunks simultaneously, but a high-bandwidth connection cannot compensate for a CPU that cannot generate those chunks in time. Keep backups and monitoring from competing with the server during peak play.

Optimization mods: where Lithium fits

Lithium is a general-purpose optimization mod targeting systems such as physics, mob AI, block ticking and data tracking. Its project documentation says it can run server-side without requiring clients to install it, which makes it a candidate for compatible Fabric or NeoForge installations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project reports that some users can see more than a 50% improvement to tick times. That is a project claim, not a guaranteed result for every pack, world or hardware configuration. Treat it as a reason to test, not a promised benchmark.

Compatibility checks before installing

  • Match the mod’s Minecraft version and loader build to the server exactly.
  • Read the modpack author’s rules; curated packs may already include overlapping optimizations or deliberately disable certain changes.
  • Take a full world backup and test on a copy first.
  • Watch for crashes, changed game behavior, desynchronization or conflicts with mods that alter the same subsystem.
  • Compare Spark profiles and gameplay under the same workload before deciding whether to keep it.

There is no universal optimization-mod list. A mod that helps one pack can conflict with another or be unavailable for its loader and version.

How do I reduce lag on a Forge/Fabric server?

  1. Identify the symptom. Separate slow block updates and rubber-banding from client rendering, network loss, login delays and a single player’s connection problem.
  2. Profile the server. Use Spark while reproducing the lag during travel, automation, mob activity and peak concurrency.
  3. Reduce active work first. Set simulation-distance no higher than view-distance, then lower both if the profile points to ticking or chunk pressure.
  4. Inspect the named workload. Check the mod, machine, entity farm or world-generation feature shown by the profile instead of applying random flags.
  5. Check memory behavior. Leave host RAM available, then test a modest heap adjustment only if collection or allocation data supports it.
  6. Test JVM changes individually. Record before and after results using the same route, farm and player count. Keep a flag only if tick time, pauses or responsiveness improve.
  7. Re-test after changes. Repeat the workload after adding a major mod, changing the loader, upgrading Minecraft or changing world-generation settings.

What should view distance and simulation distance be?

Use view-distance=10 as the documented baseline reference. Set simulation-distance to the same value or slightly lower, then measure. If chunk loading and network work are the problem, reduce view distance. If active entities, block ticks or automation consume the tick budget, reduce simulation distance as well. Explain that lower simulation distance changes farms, mob spawning and redstone behavior, and verify the result during the busiest normal workload rather than while the server is empty.

Common mistakes and recovery steps

Setting both distances high because the server has spare RAM

Distance settings create CPU, chunk-generation and network work as well as memory use. Restore the previous values, profile while exploring, and raise one distance only if the server remains within its tick budget.

Allocating nearly all host memory

Stop the server, reduce the heap, and leave room for the operating system, drivers, backups and monitoring. Check whether swapping or host-level contention disappears before considering another change.

Copying a JVM flag list from another pack

Revert to the known configuration, establish a baseline, and test one argument at a time. Different Java releases, loaders and mod workloads can respond differently.

Installing several optimization mods simultaneously

Restore the last stable backup, add one compatible mod, and run the same profile and gameplay checks. Multiple changes make crashes and performance regressions difficult to attribute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blaming the server for client rendering lag

Compare server tick data with the affected player’s frame rate, render distance, memory and network latency. If server ticks are healthy, tune the client or connection rather than lowering server distances blindly.

Judging performance from startup or an empty world

Startup timing does not represent peak play. A server may appear perfect at spawn and struggle only when several players generate terrain, activate machines or load mob farms. Keep a baseline from those activities and repeat it after every meaningful change.

When managed hosting is the better option

Self-hosting is most flexible when you can monitor CPU, memory, storage and backups. Managed modded Minecraft hosting can be practical when you need automated updates, scheduled backups, a control panel or support for Forge and Fabric without maintaining the machine yourself. Before choosing a provider, verify the exact loader and modpack support, guaranteed CPU and memory allocation, backup policy, data-center geography, console access and rules for custom JVM arguments. Marketing labels alone do not establish that a host can run your pack smoothly.

Ask whether the provider permits Spark, preserves your server.properties values after restarts, and lets you download world backups. Confirm how upgrades are staged; changing the loader, Java version or modpack without a rollback plan can create the same problems as an untested self-hosted change. Geography also affects player latency even when server TPS is healthy, so choose a location near the expected player group.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best settings for a modded Minecraft server?

Begin with view-distance=10 as a reference, set simulation-distance equal to or slightly below it, and profile before raising either value. Allocate only the heap the measured workload needs, leave memory for the host, and test JVM changes individually.

How much RAM does a modded Minecraft server need?

There is no universal number. Pack size, loader and Minecraft versions, player count, exploration, dimensions and automation all affect usage. Measure heap occupancy and garbage-collection behavior during the busiest normal play, then adjust modestly while watching total host memory and tick stability.

What should view distance and simulation distance be?

Use 10 for view distance as a documented baseline and keep simulation distance equal to or marginally lower. Lower view distance for chunk-send or generation pressure; lower simulation distance for active ticking pressure. Remember that distant farms, mobs and redstone may stop when simulation distance is reduced.

How do I reduce lag on a Forge/Fabric server?

Identify whether the symptom is server ticks, chunk loading, client rendering or networking. Run Spark during representative travel, automation and mob activity, then address the subsystem it identifies. Tune distances, heap or JVM arguments one change at a time and compare the same workload before and after.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Lithium fix every modded-server performance problem?

No. Lithium targets systems such as physics, mob AI, block ticking and data tracking, and its project reports more than 50% tick-time improvement in some cases. That is not a guarantee. Match its exact Minecraft and loader version, check pack compatibility, back up the world and verify the result with Spark.

The Bottom Line

Start conservatively: use view-distance=10, keep simulation-distance equal to or lower, reserve host memory, and profile with Spark during real workloads. Change one setting or mod at a time, keep only measured improvements, and revisit the baseline after every major version or pack change.
