There is no universal best AMD FSR 4 preset for handheld gaming PCs. AMD now calls its machine-learning upscaling technology FSR Upscaling, and its current compatibility information lists selected Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics products—not general handheld APUs. If a game exposes FSR on your particular device, start in that game’s graphics or video menu and choose a preset based on your frame-rate target and image-quality preference. First confirm that your handheld and game actually support the feature.
The answer depends on the exact handheld, graphics hardware, game, driver and display resolution. A preset that works well for one game or device cannot be assumed to suit another. The steps below help you check what is actually supported and make a fair comparison without treating a menu label or desktop benchmark as proof of handheld performance.

First, check whether your handheld can use FSR Upscaling
The word “handheld” does not identify one hardware configuration. A gaming handheld may use a different APU, operating system, graphics driver, and OEM software package from a desktop PC or another handheld. Those differences matter: AMD’s current compatibility information for ML-based FSR Upscaling covers selected Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics products, but does not establish general official support for handheld APUs.
GPUOpen’s documented SDK path likewise says FSR Upscaling 4 requires a discrete RX 9000 or RX 7000 GPU; on other hardware, that path automatically selects FSR 3.1.5. That description is not proof that every game, device, or driver exposes the same fallback. Treat the game’s actual menu and the manufacturer’s support information for your model as the practical checks—not the presence of an AMD chip by itself.

This distinction is important when interpreting compatibility claims. A handheld may have AMD graphics hardware and still not be among the products listed for ML-based FSR Upscaling. Likewise, an SDK’s behavior when it encounters other hardware does not guarantee that a particular game has implemented that fallback or that the player will see a particular version in its menu. Check the exact game and supported device software rather than inferring availability from the processor brand.
Check the exact device and game
- Identify your handheld model and graphics hardware. Check the device’s system information or manufacturer’s specifications. Record the exact model, rather than relying on a family name that may include different configurations. Also note the operating system, since the supported driver and control software may differ by device.
- Open the game’s graphics or video settings. Look for an upscaling option labelled FSR, FSR 4, or FSR Upscaling. Menu labels and locations vary by game. Note whether the game offers a separate output resolution setting as well as an FSR choice.
- Check which version or integration the game identifies. AMD says some supported games include native ML-based FSR Upscaling, while some games with FSR 3.1-or-later integration may be upgraded through AMD Software on supported systems. A game having an older FSR option does not, on its own, prove that the ML-based version is active.
- Confirm the device’s supported software path. Use the handheld manufacturer’s driver and control software guidance. AMD’s Adrenalin release notes say the desktop software does not include support for handheld gaming devices.
If you cannot find the option, do not assume that changing a desktop driver setting will add official support to the handheld. Check the game’s documentation and the OEM’s supported updates for the exact model.
It is useful to separate three checks: whether the graphics hardware is covered by AMD’s compatibility information, whether the game integrates the relevant FSR version, and whether the manufacturer supports the software path needed on that handheld. A “yes” to only one of these questions is not enough to establish that you can use ML-based FSR Upscaling in that game on that device.

When a supported game exposes FSR Upscaling, AMD’s general instructions are to select the FSR quality preset from the game’s own graphics or video menu. The available choices may include Quality, Balanced, and Performance, but AMD’s documentation does not identify one as the best setting for every handheld.
Use your actual priorities to choose among the choices the game offers. A preset choice is a trade-off between image quality and frame rate; the useful balance depends on the game, the handheld’s display resolution, the rendering and output resolutions, your target frame rate, and your tolerance for image changes. Without a specified device and game or comparable handheld testing, a universal ranking would be misleading.

In particular, do not read the preset names as performance promises. They do not establish a particular frame rate on a given handheld. The source information does not provide controlled handheld comparisons of Quality, Balanced, and Performance, nor does it establish one preset as optimal across games. Your own device and the game’s available settings are the relevant context.
A practical way to compare the available choices
- Set a target before changing the preset. Decide what matters most in this game: a particular frame-rate target, clearer image detail, or a compromise. Do not treat a preset name as a guarantee that you will reach a specific frame rate.
- Record the starting setup. Note the game’s output resolution and the current graphics settings that you intend to leave unchanged. This makes it easier to tell whether a difference came from the FSR preset rather than a simultaneous resolution or quality change.
- Use the game’s FSR menu. Open the game’s graphics or video settings, find its FSR entry, and select one of the presets it actually provides. If there is a separate output-resolution setting, note it before comparing choices.
- Compare in the same scene. Keep the game, output resolution, and other settings unchanged while you try the available FSR presets. Use a repeatable scene or gameplay segment, and judge both how the image looks and whether performance meets your own target.
- Keep the choice that fits the game. If the image is not acceptable, choose a preset that gives image quality more priority. If you prefer the performance trade-off, use the option that better serves that goal. The right result can differ between games on the same handheld.
- Recheck after game or OEM updates. A game update can change its graphics menu or upscaling integration, and handheld drivers are delivered through the manufacturer-supported route. Confirm which option is available rather than assuming a previous setup still applies.
This is a comparison method, not a performance benchmark: available sources do not establish a device-by-device handheld test result or an optimal preset for any particular game. If a game does not expose FSR Upscaling, there is no in-game FSR Upscaling preset to tune in that title; do not substitute an older FSR menu option and assume it is the same feature.
FSR Upscaling, older FSR integrations, and RSR are different things
Names in game menus can be confusing. AMD’s current name for the machine-learning technology formerly called FSR 4 is FSR Upscaling. AMD uses FSR Redstone for a broader feature suite. A game menu may still use the FSR 4 label, and some titles may expose an older FSR integration instead. Check the game’s own description or version information where available.
The name change does not mean every option labelled FSR has the same implementation. AMD describes native ML-based support in some games, and says some games with FSR 3.1-or-later integration can be upgraded through AMD Software on supported systems. In either case, the availability of that route depends on the game and supported hardware. If the menu only names FSR without a version, avoid claiming that the ML-based version is active unless the game or AMD’s supported information confirms it.
Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is not FSR 4. ASUS describes RSR as a driver-level fallback for games without FSR. Its guidance is specific to covered ROG Ally configurations and a 1080p example: run the game fullscreen at 1280×720 or 1600×900, then enable RSR so the driver scales the image to 1080p. Those are ASUS’s Ally-specific RSR instructions, not a recommended FSR Upscaling preset or instructions for every handheld.

| Option | Where it is enabled | What the cited guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| ML-based FSR Upscaling (formerly FSR 4) | In a supported game’s graphics or video menu | AMD lists selected RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics products; this does not establish general official handheld-APU support. |
| Older FSR integration | In the game, if the title provides it | A game with an older FSR option does not by itself prove ML-based FSR Upscaling is active. AMD says some FSR 3.1-or-later integrations may be upgraded through AMD Software on supported systems. |
| Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) | Driver-level setting | ASUS’s Ally-specific 1080p example uses fullscreen 1280×720 or 1600×900 input, scaled to 1080p. |
Do not use RSR instructions as evidence that a game is running FSR 4. They refer to a different feature and a particular manufacturer’s handheld guidance. In the ASUS example, the lower input resolution is part of an RSR setup; it is not a universal rendering-resolution recommendation for FSR Upscaling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the handheld maker’s driver and software instructions
Desktop AMD instructions do not necessarily transfer to a handheld. AMD’s driver release notes state that AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition does not include support for handheld gaming devices. For a handheld, follow the manufacturer’s supported driver and software path for the specific model; do not assume a desktop Adrenalin option will appear or work as described.
This affects how you should troubleshoot as well as how you install updates. If AMD’s desktop documentation describes an option that you cannot find, that absence is not a reason to force a desktop driver onto the handheld. Check the OEM’s device-specific support information and use the supported software path for your model. A control or compatibility option documented for a desktop system is not automatically available on a handheld.
If an FSR feature is missing, check the game’s supported graphics options and the OEM’s current device guidance first. The documented sources do not establish unofficial DLL swaps, leaked models, or community modifications as official AMD support for handhelds. Avoid treating those methods as a dependable settings fix.
What AMD has said about future handheld support
AMD executive Jack Huynh was reported by Windows Central, in an English translation of remarks from TheElec, as saying AMD planned to expand its machine-learning FSR 4 technology to APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices by the end of 2026. The report also quoted Huynh describing a lightweight FSR 4 model tailored for APU environments. These are forward-looking statements about a plan, not confirmation that the feature is generally available on handhelds now or will support every model.

In the translated quotation reported by Windows Central, Huynh said: “We will expand the machine learning and AI-based FSR 4 technology, which was preemptively introduced in existing external graphics cards, to the entire product lineup by the end of this year, including APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices. We plan to respond in two directions: existing APUs and launching new product lines.” The same report quoted him saying AMD had developed “a dedicated model of FSR 4 that is lightweight and tailored for APU environments.” The statements describe an intention and development direction, not a device-by-device compatibility list.
As of October 13, 2026, the compatibility information described above does not establish general official support across handheld APUs. For a purchase or setup decision, rely on a current official compatibility listing and the OEM’s release notes for your exact model, rather than treating the reported end-of-2026 intention as a present-tense guarantee. A planned expansion also does not identify which existing handhelds, games, drivers, or operating systems will be included.

A useful recommendation needs a named device and game. Compare the following before settling on a preset:
- Official support: Does the exact handheld and graphics hardware appear in applicable compatibility information, and does the OEM provide a supported software path?
- Game integration: Does the game expose ML-based FSR Upscaling, an older FSR version, or no FSR option? If the version is unclear, do not infer that an older menu entry is the ML-based feature.
- Resolution: What output resolution is the handheld game using, and what rendering or input resolution does the selected option use? Keep these settings in view when comparing presets.
- Personal target: Does the preset give you the balance of image quality and frame rate you want in that game? Judge the result on the actual handheld rather than assuming desktop results apply.
- Repeatability: Are you comparing presets in the same scene with other relevant settings unchanged?
- Software availability: Does the manufacturer provide a supported driver and software route for your exact model, rather than relying on desktop Adrenalin guidance?
There is no handheld-specific performance statistic or controlled comparison in the cited material to support a device-wide preset ranking. Desktop figures should not be transferred to handheld APUs as if they were handheld results. No purchase cost, performance gain, or device-by-device preset winner can be established from the compatibility information alone.
Frequently Asked Questions

Does AMD FSR 4 work on all handheld gaming PCs?
No general official handheld-APU support is established by AMD’s current compatibility information, which lists selected RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics products. Check the compatibility information, game integration, and OEM software path for your exact model.
If my game has an FSR option, does that mean it is using FSR 4?
Not necessarily. AMD now calls its ML-based FSR 4 technology FSR Upscaling, while some games may have older FSR integrations or retain an FSR 4 label. Check the game’s version information where available; an older FSR option alone does not prove the ML-based feature is active.
Should I use Quality, Balanced, or Performance?
Choose among the presets the game actually offers based on your desired balance of image quality and frame rate. AMD’s general instructions direct users to the in-game preset menu, but do not establish one choice as optimal for every handheld or game.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is Radeon Super Resolution the same as FSR 4?
No. RSR is a separate, driver-level feature. ASUS’s specific ROG Ally guidance for a 1080p example uses fullscreen 1280×720 or 1600×900 input and scales it to 1080p. Those instructions are not an FSR Upscaling preset recommendation for all handhelds.
Can I install AMD Adrenalin on my handheld to enable FSR Upscaling?
AMD’s driver release notes say Adrenalin does not include support for handheld gaming devices. Follow the device manufacturer’s supported driver and software instructions, and do not assume desktop settings will transfer.
Has AMD confirmed FSR 4 support for handhelds by the end of 2026?
A Windows Central report, translating remarks from TheElec, quoted AMD executive Jack Huynh describing a plan to expand the technology to APUs, laptops, and handhelds by the end of 2026. That forward-looking statement is not a general compatibility guarantee for every handheld. Check current AMD and OEM information for your model.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Check your exact handheld, game, FSR version, and OEM software support before changing settings. If ML-based FSR Upscaling is available in the game, test its offered presets in the same scene and choose the balance of image quality and frame rate that suits you. Do not mistake RSR or an older FSR integration for FSR Upscaling, and do not assume a universal handheld preset exists.
