Before paying for a used PS5, test the actual console—including its internet and PlayStation service access—and confirm its serial number is intact. Before buying a used PS5 game disc, inspect it and, if possible, test it in the console you plan to use. The key mismatch to avoid: a PS5 Digital Edition cannot play PS4 game discs, and eligible PS4 disc upgrades still require a disc-drive PS5 and the disc.
Before you meet the seller
Start with the listing and the seller, then ask for evidence that the specific console works. PlayStation recommends checking seller reputation and requesting video proof of key functions; video is useful, but it cannot replace an in-person inspection.

- Check seller ratings, feedback and return terms. Confirm the listing names the exact PS5 model and specifies what is included.
- Ask for an unedited video showing the console powering on and producing an image, connecting to the internet, operating its buttons and ports, and reading a disc if it has a drive.
- Ask the seller to sign out and deactivate the console before handoff. Do not rely on a promise that the device can be separated from the seller’s account later.
PlayStation’s US buying guide recommends checking the seller’s reputation, testing the console and inspecting it in person for issues a video might miss.
Inspect and test the PS5 in person
Check the serial number and physical condition
Make sure the serial number is present and legible. Walk away if it has been removed or altered: PlayStation lists an altered, defaced or removed serial number among exclusions in its US/Canada warranty terms. Look over the casing and seals for damage or signs of opening or repair, but do not treat an intact seal as proof the console is healthy.

Test the functions you will rely on
- Power on the console and confirm it produces a stable picture and operates normally. Listen for unusual noise and watch for overheating or unexpected shutdowns; a short test cannot establish the console’s long-term condition.
- Test the controller’s buttons and sticks, the console’s USB ports and HDMI output, and its Wi-Fi or other network connection.
- If the PS5 has a disc drive, insert the game you are considering buying and check that the console reads it. If possible, try another known-good game disc too. A successful read of one disc does not guarantee the drive is fault-free.
- Have the seller demonstrate access to PlayStation services while the console is online. A console reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services, which can prevent any account from accessing them on that device. Sony’s US terms of service say a suspension can block Store content and games or modes that require PlayStation services; some disc games that do not require those services may still run.
Have the seller deactivate it
Ask the seller to sign out and disable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the console. The menu path is Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. PlayStation’s account support covers account and security settings. Confirm the console is no longer tied to the seller before you pay.
Check that the game disc and PS5 are compatible
A physical game is only useful if your console can read it. Identify whether the PS5 has a disc drive rather than assuming from the listing name or photos. PlayStation says PS4 game discs cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition. For eligible PS4 disc upgrades, a disc-drive PS5 is required, and the original disc must remain inserted to play the upgraded digital game. Check the specific game’s support information rather than assuming every PS4 game has an upgrade.
For the exact title you are buying, verify the edition, language or region needs, included content and any online or account requirements on that game’s listing or support page. Those details are not universal across games.
Inspect and test a used PS5 game disc
- Under good light, inspect both sides for cracks, deep scratches, labels or grime.
- Whenever possible, test the exact disc in the intended console before paying. If it fails and the console has a drive, try another known-good game, Blu-ray disc or DVD to help distinguish a disc problem from a drive-reading problem.
- PlayStation recommends cleaning a disc with a soft, clean cloth. Cleaning does not show that deep scratches, cracks or a faulty drive have been fixed.
- Do not expect a used disc to transfer the seller’s account or digital purchases. PlayStation describes Store purchases as personal licenses in its US terms of service; do not pay extra for an account or a promise of access to the seller’s downloads.
PlayStation’s disc troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another game, Blu-ray disc or DVD if a disc will not read. PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs.

Warranty coverage for a secondhand purchase is uncertain. PlayStation’s US buying guide says, “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty*.” The asterisk matters: the same page treats certified refurbished PlayStation products differently and says they include warranty.

For the US and Canada, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 limited hardware warranty covers the original purchaser for one year from the original purchase date and requires a dated bill of sale or retailer receipt for service. It does not establish that a remaining warranty transfers to a secondhand buyer. Ask for the original dated receipt, check the terms that apply where you live, and read the seller’s return policy before paying. The warranty details here are specific to the US and Canada; they do not settle consumer rights in other jurisdictions.
Sony’s US physical-media warranty states 90 days of limited coverage from the original purchase date for the original purchaser of physical software media. That policy does not resolve whether coverage transfers to a secondhand buyer or what rules apply in other countries.

No inspection can guarantee future reliability. If the seller will not allow a basic test, cannot demonstrate service access, or will not clarify the model and what is included, factor that risk into your decision rather than treating the listing as verified.
