There is no single best Baldur’s Gate 3 preset for every platform. On PC, settings depend on your hardware and display; Steam Deck has a native build with its own upscaling options; consoles offer platform-specific modes. Use the guidance below as a starting point, then change settings to address the issue you actually see.
Best PC settings: tune for your hardware
BG3’s PC graphics menu has to cover a wide range of processors, graphics cards, and screen resolutions, so a universal preset would be misleading. If performance or stability is poor, make one change at a time and compare the result in the same area of the game.

Try DirectX 11 and Vulkan
If the game stutters, crashes, or performs poorly, test the other renderer: switch between DirectX 11 and Vulkan and see which behaves better on your system. Larian recommends this as a troubleshooting step; neither API is established as the best choice for every PC. Larian’s PC performance troubleshooting guide also recommends lowering the resolution or graphics settings to diagnose performance problems.
Check the frame-rate cap and graphics card
- If your monitor refresh rate is above 60 Hz and you are encountering graphical issues, Larian suggests trying a 60 fps cap.
- On a laptop or other PC with both integrated and discrete graphics, check that BG3 is using the discrete graphics card.
- Lower resolution or graphics settings systematically; these are diagnostic adjustments, not a prescribed low- or medium-quality preset.
Larian’s 2023 launch-era PC announcement gave 1440p at 60 fps with a good CPU and a GeForce 3060 as an example, and said native 4K called for a top-end GeForce 4080/4090 or AMD equivalent, with DLSS able to reduce requirements. Those dated examples are not current buying thresholds or a guarantee for every PC. Read the launch-era PC guidance.

Best Steam Deck settings
Start with the Native build’s defaults and keep SteamOS current. Larian says the Native build needs less CPU processing and memory than running the game through Proton, and describes smoother gameplay and shorter loading times as intended benefits. That is not a promise of a fixed frame rate in every area.
Use the Native build’s current upscaler
Larian’s guidance changed over time. Its general Steam Deck FAQ recommends medium video defaults and FSR 1.0 Balanced when performance is troublesome. The Native-build FAQ explains that FSR 2.2 can produce a sharper image than FSR 1 at some performance cost. Then, in Hotfix #35 on November 20, 2025, Larian changed the Native build’s default upscaling type from FSR 1 to FSR 2.2. So FSR 1.0 Balanced is an older troubleshooting recommendation, while FSR 2.2 is the later Native-build default. Steam Deck FAQ; Native-build FAQ; Hotfix #35 notes.

Use the recommended layout and display format
Larian’s general Steam Deck FAQ recommends the Official Layout for Baldur’s Gate 3, a 16:9 aspect ratio, fullscreen, and medium video defaults. If you install the game on a microSD card, the FAQ recommends a 256GB card with high read/write speeds (UHS-I to UHS-III). This is storage guidance, not a claim that a faster card improves frame rate.

What to expect in demanding areas
Larian says its model-streaming improvements across platforms were intended to reduce frame-rate spikes in busy locations, including the Lower City in Act 3. The official guidance does not establish a current benchmark or guarantee uninterrupted 30 or 40 fps, and performance can vary by scene and update. Larian’s Hotfix #34 notes describe the Native build’s intended benefits.

Switch back to Proton only if troubleshooting calls for it
If the Native build causes a problem, Larian documents reverting to Proton version 8 or higher. Save locations differ between the Native and Proton builds; with Steam Cloud enabled, the most recent saves sync automatically when switching to Native. Follow the Native-build FAQ’s switching instructions rather than treating a build change as a routine performance tweak.
PS5 and PS5 Pro: choose a mode for your priority
The published resolution and frame-rate figures below are for PS5 Pro, not base PS5. In its November 2024 announcement, Larian specified these Pro modes:

Larian also said PS5 Pro split-screen offers 30 or 60 fps according to the selected Quality or Performance mode. These figures come from the November 2024 PS5 Pro announcement; that announcement does not establish the current output modes for base PS5.
Don’t disable performance features pre-emptively
For a specific controller radial-wheel lag or freeze issue on consoles, Larian’s September 2025 workaround recommends turning off Performance Mode and VRR. This is a symptom-specific workaround, not a general recommendation for players who have no such problem. A later update to Hotfix #34 also suggested disabling Performance Mode as a temporary response to occasional freezing; Hotfix #35 subsequently listed a fix for a PS5 freeze triggered by L2. Xbox Series X and Series S: what settings can be recommended?
The official material cited here confirms Xbox fixes but does not establish current Series X versus Series S resolution or frame-rate targets, nor a model-specific graphics preset. PS5 Pro figures should not be applied to Xbox. Use the options shown in your game and console display settings, but the available official guidance does not establish which Xbox mode is best or what target either model achieves. Hotfix #35.
