To check whether an online casino is licensed for you, search the official gambling regulator’s register for the place where you live or are being offered gambling. Match the listed operator, exact website or app domain, current licence status, and permitted activity to the casino you reached. A footer logo or licence claim is not proof on its own. If the record is missing or does not match, do not deposit or share identity details until you have verified the discrepancy.
Which gambling regulator should you check?
Online gambling licences are territorial. The relevant question is not simply whether a casino has a licence somewhere, but whether it is authorized to serve customers in your jurisdiction. The UK Gambling Commission describes its remit as gambling websites trading or advertising to customers in Great Britain; Spain’s DGOJ says authorizations from other states are not valid for offering online gambling in Spain. Use the regulator responsible for your location rather than assuming a foreign licence applies.

Examples of official registers and guidance include the UK Gambling Commission’s public register information, ACMA’s Australian operator check, the Spanish DGOJ’s illegal-gambling guidance, and the Dutch regulator’s licensee register. These are examples, not substitutes for checking the authority that applies where you are.

How to verify a casino’s licence
- Find the legal operator. Check the casino’s footer, terms and account information for the company’s legal name and any trading name. A casino brand may differ from the company that operates it. Spain’s DGOJ advises consumers to identify the responsible operator before checking its authorization.
- Open the regulator’s register independently. Do not rely on a link supplied by the casino as your only check. Search by the operator, brand, licence number or domain when the register allows it. ACMA’s register lists the trading name, licence holder, URL and licensing authority; the Dutch regulator says its register can be searched by company, website, app or licence number.
- Compare the exact details. Check that the regulator’s record identifies the same legal entity and exact domain or app you are using, that the licence is current, and that it authorizes the activity offered. A licence for a different company, an old domain or another type of gambling does not establish that this casino is authorized. The UK Gambling Commission’s register guidance explains the licence and domain checks and notes that regulatory actions are shown in the register.
- Resolve any mismatch before proceeding. If the casino, operator or domain is absent or does not match, stop before depositing or entering payment or identity details. Check the regulator’s official reporting or complaint route. ACMA advises avoiding services not listed on its register; the UK Gambling Commission accepts confidential reports of suspected illegal activity, and Spain’s DGOJ provides a route to report an illegal site.
Warning signs—and what they do not prove
Appearance is not verification. A polished website, footer badge, gaming certificate or familiar payment brand cannot replace a matching entry in the relevant regulator’s register. The UK Gambling Commission says licensed gambling businesses must display that they are licensed and link to its public register; follow that link through to the regulator’s record and check whether the details actually match.

Some warning signs are specific to local rules. Ukraine’s PlayCity lists indicators that may suggest an illegal casino in Ukraine, including claims of licences from other jurisdictions such as Curaçao or Anjouan, a non-.ua domain, cryptocurrency deposits or transfers to a personal bank card, and no identity check before betting. These are clues cited by the Ukrainian authority, not universal tests of legality.
Likewise, Spain’s DGOJ says operators it licenses for online gambling in Spain must use a .es domain. That requirement is not a general rule for other countries. A foreign licence may be valid in the country that issued it yet still not authorize a casino to serve you where you live.

What a licence does—and does not—tell you about protection
Licensing does not make every offer suitable or make protections identical across borders. Before depositing with a licensed operator, read the bonus restrictions and terms. In Great Britain, businesses must disclose whether customer funds are protected if the business fails and provide complaint procedures. The UK Gambling Commission’s consumer safety checks explain these protections, including referral to alternative dispute resolution if a complaint remains unresolved after eight weeks. The distinction matters because Spain’s DGOJ warns that illegal gambling can put customer funds and personal data at risk and expose consumers to fraud or deceptive practices. A licence check is a practical way to verify authorization; it is not a guarantee that every product term is favorable or every risk disappears.

If you already used a site that may be unlicensed
- Pause further deposits and do not send more identity or payment information while you check the operator.
- Save the site address, relevant terms, transaction records and communications in case the regulator or a payment provider asks for details.
- Use the regulator’s official reporting or complaint channel for your jurisdiction. Do not assume that a foreign regulator can resolve a complaint about service offered where you live.
- For a licensed operator, check its published complaint procedure and the regulator’s guidance on escalation and customer-fund protection.
