1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no universal “best” preset for horror games: each title handles lighting, effects and hardware differently. For a smoother game without flattening its mood, start with the developer’s hardware guidance, test a repeatable scene, then adjust one demanding setting at a time. Preserve the effects that matter to you when performance allows, and use the game’s own brightness calibration rather than a genre-wide gamma target.
Start with the game’s own performance targets
Check the game’s published system requirements, supported graphics features and any stated resolution or frame-rate targets before changing settings. They are specific to the game, not a standard for the genre. For example, PlayStation lists Until Dawn’s minimum tier at an average 720p/30 fps and its recommended tier at an average 1080p/60 fps. A higher tier targets 1440p/60 fps or 4K/30 fps. These are the publisher’s listed targets for Until Dawn, not guarantees for every PC or horror game. PlayStation’s Until Dawn PC specifications also list DLSS 3.7 and FSR 3.1 support for that title.

Use a preset near the tier that matches your hardware as a starting point, not a final answer. Patches, drivers, feature support and performance differ, so verify results on your own system.

- Choose a demanding scene. Use the same location and gameplay actions for each comparison. A dark corridor, a scene with complex reflections, or an area with many lights may reveal different bottlenecks, depending on the game.
- Record how it feels and performs. Note image clarity, smoothness and any distracting stutter. Average FPS alone can hide uneven frame delivery. AMD’s Radeon Game Advisor documents average FPS, 95th-percentile frame time and frame-time graphs, with recommendations for available in-game options. The tool’s recommendations must be applied manually, and its support is limited to compatible Radeon configurations and games. AMD’s Game Advisor documentation explains its measurements and limits.
- Change one setting at a time. Revisit the same scene after each adjustment. Keep a change only if it improves the performance-and-image balance that matters to you.
- Test the settings you care about last. Once performance is acceptable, restore or compare visual options such as shadows, fog, reflections and post-processing individually. Their artistic contribution depends on the title.
What to lower first when performance falls short
There is no effect that is always the right first cut: graphics engines differ. Resolution and ray tracing can have a substantial performance impact, while texture quality is often more demanding on video memory than on compute, according to MSI’s general graphics-settings guide. These are broad tendencies, not fixed outcomes for every game. MSI’s overview of settings and performance can help explain the trade-offs.

Try upscaling or a lower render scale
If the game offers DLSS, FSR or another upscaling option, compare its available modes in the same scene. Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an image for the display, trading image characteristics for performance. Results and compatibility vary by game, hardware and mode, so check fine detail, motion and readability at your normal viewing distance. Epic’s guide outlines the general trade-off between upscaling modes, but it does not establish a universal winner. Epic Games Store’s PC ray-tracing optimization guide
Reducing output resolution or render scale is another option if upscaling is unavailable or unsatisfactory. Compare clarity in the areas you actually need to read, such as signs, environmental details or interface text.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Reduce ray tracing if its cost outweighs its contribution
Ray-traced reflections, global illumination and shadows can be costly, but the visual gain depends on the game’s implementation and scene. Try lowering or disabling the specific ray-tracing effect that is most expensive before assuming the entire feature must go. In a ray-tracing scenario, Epic identifies screen-space ambient occlusion (SSAO) as a lower-cost fallback for ambient occlusion; whether the game offers a useful alternative is title-specific.

Lower other quality settings selectively
If performance is still below your goal, compare the game’s overall quality preset or reduce individual options it exposes. Texture quality may be worth lowering if video memory is the constraint; it is not automatically the best adjustment for a compute bottleneck. The available switches and their impact differ by title. Record what you change so you can reverse any option that damages image quality more than it improves frame delivery.
Keep the atmosphere—and calibrate brightness in context
Darkness, lighting, shadows, fog, reflections and post-processing are artistic choices, not universal requirements for horror. Decide which effects shape the particular game’s mood for you, then retain them when your performance budget allows. If you need more headroom, compare the scene with and without one effect rather than assuming that a setting is essential—or expendable—in every horror title.

Set brightness or gamma using the game’s calibration screen and its intended reference image. A single brightness value cannot be recommended across games, displays and viewing conditions. Raising brightness may improve visibility for you but can change the contrast and shadow detail the developers intended; use the game’s guidance as your reference and adjust for readability and comfort.
Judge changes by the scene, not by a preset name

- Did frame delivery improve in the same gameplay scene, including stutter or uneven pacing?
- Is the image still clear at your display’s output resolution?
- Does the effect make a visible difference to lighting, reflections or shadows in this title?
- Does the option work with your hardware and the game’s feature support?
- Can you read the scene comfortably without making the intended atmosphere less effective for you?
Upscaling modes and graphics features are implemented differently across games, and vendor guidance is not independent testing of your configuration. Recheck after updates or driver changes if performance or image quality shifts.
