Install DroidDeck, add its in-app Linux runtime, and press Play to download Steam. Compatibility and performance vary by device, so an Android handheld alone is not enough to ensure it will run.
Check compatibility and storage first
The Droid-Deck project lists Android 9 or newer and a supported Adreno GPU—Adreno 730 or newer, or an 8xx-series GPU—as requirements. It specifically lists Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR and Adreno 710 GPUs as unsupported. Check your handheld’s actual GPU model; its operating system and handheld form factor do not establish compatibility.
Plan for about 3 GB for the runtime. The optional Desktop & apps components add about 1.1 GB for desktop and emulator components. These are project estimates, not guarantees of the final storage consumed on every device. The project does not establish that an SD card is supported or required.
Get the APK from the project’s release page
Open the Droid-Deck GitHub repository and follow its Releases link to download the APK. The project README warns: “DroidDeck does not have a stand-alone website. Do not click on any download links from websites claiming to be the DroidDeck team.” Avoid APK mirrors and standalone sites as download authorities.

The GitHub Releases page lists version 0.3.0, released October 2, 2026. Its release notes describe Steam Deck-style controller support, gyro and Steam Input options, a performance overlay, GPU driver selection, ARM64 Flathub apps, and Stable, Preview and Test update channels. These are release-page descriptions, not independently verified performance claims. Check the release page for the current APK and notes when you install, since versions and packages can change.
Install DroidDeck and start Steam
- Install the APK. Open the downloaded APK and follow Android’s installation prompts. Android may require you to allow the app you used to open the file to install unknown apps; the exact prompt and settings path vary by device. Only enable that permission for the trusted app you are using, and turn it off again if you no longer need it.
- Install the Linux runtime. Launch DroidDeck and use its in-app option to install the runtime. Allow the download and setup to finish before continuing.
- Optionally add Desktop & apps. This adds the project’s desktop and emulator components. The project does not state that this option is needed just to launch Steam.
- Press Play. On the first launch, Steam downloads. When it finishes, sign in to your Steam account.
If Steam will not start, check Android’s process setting
The project README says Android’s Restrict child processes setting in Developer options can prevent Steam from launching. Turn that restriction off before starting Steam if the setting is available on your device. The README specifically says that on Android 12 or 13, if the setting is unavailable, the first Steam launch offers a Fix it for me button.

Do not assume that workaround applies to other Android versions: the project README documents the fallback for Android 12 and 13. Follow the prompts shown by DroidDeck rather than relying on uncorroborated instructions from standalone sites.

If setup fails, the project points to session logs in Download/DroidDeck/. Look there for information you can use when investigating an error or asking for help; use the log location actually present on your device.

The project cautions that “Compatibility and performance vary by device; hardware validation is limited.” Completing installation does not guarantee that a particular game will work well. The README also notes that desktop compositing uses software rendering and Firefox sandboxing is reduced under proot, so the optional desktop environment has its own limitations.
