There is no universal Shopify replacement. For a growing hosted store, BigCommerce is usually the closest fit because it combines native B2B, multi-storefront and international tools with payment-provider flexibility. WooCommerce is the control-and-ownership choice; Wix and Squarespace suit smaller, design-led catalogs; Square Online is strongest for physical retailers; Ecwid adds commerce to an existing website; and Adobe Commerce is for enterprises with substantial technical resources.
The right choice depends on catalog complexity, payment economics, technical responsibility, selling channels and the total cost of operating the store—not just the advertised monthly subscription.

What counts as a Shopify alternative?
“Shopify alternative” covers several different product types. Hosted all-in-one platforms manage infrastructure and updates for you. Website builders add commerce to a broader site-building product. Open-source systems give you code and hosting control but transfer operations to your team. Embedded tools put a cart inside an existing site, while enterprise and headless platforms target complex integrations rather than quick launches.

Ecwid can be ideal when you want to keep an established website, but it is not a like-for-like replacement for a commerce-first storefront. Adobe Commerce can support sophisticated B2B operations, yet its implementation burden makes it unsuitable for most small businesses.

How to compare platforms properly
Total cost
Separate five different costs: the platform subscription, any platform transaction fee, payment-processor charges, apps or extensions, and professional services. Add hosting, premium themes, backups, security, email, shipping, tax, fraud prevention, migration and ongoing development. Annual billing can reduce the published monthly rate while creating a longer commitment.
Ease of use
Assess more than initial setup. Product creation, variants, collections, shipping rules, tax settings, staff permissions, refunds and troubleshooting determine the daily workload. A managed platform generally reduces server work; an open-source stack can be easier to tailor but harder to maintain.

Ask whether the platform can handle your future catalog, variant count, order volume, inventory locations, search and filtering, international domains, multiple storefronts, B2B pricing and API traffic. A system that works for 100 products may become awkward at 10,000 SKUs or with customer-specific catalogs.
Payments
List gateways available in every country where you sell. Check recurring payments, local methods, buy-now-pay-later options, chargeback tools and fraud controls. A “no platform transaction fee” claim never means payment processing is free.
Design, content and checkout
Compare templates, landing pages, blogging, SEO controls, mobile editing, product-page flexibility and custom code. Distinguish theme and cart customization from checkout branding, checkout logic, payment-page control and server-side order processing. Many hosted services limit the latter.
Channels and ownership
Check integrations for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, Google, Amazon and eBay, plus pickup, delivery and in-person sales. For portability, confirm what you can export: products, variants, customers, orders, reviews, images, URLs, content and analytics. Self-hosted software gives more control over code and data, but also gives you responsibility for backups, security, updates, performance and disaster recovery.
1. BigCommerce: best hosted alternative for growing stores
BigCommerce is the strongest direct alternative when you want managed hosting but are outgrowing a basic builder. Its product areas include B2B commerce, multi-storefront, headless commerce, international selling, product feeds, inventory, checkout, shipping and analytics. See the official pricing page for current plan details.

Pricing and payment qualification
On August 18, 2026, the public US pricing page showed Core at $39 per month or $29 per month when billed annually, Growth at $105 or $79 annually, and Scale at $399 or $299 annually. Performance was custom, starting at $1,499 per month billed annually. The page also displayed annual trailing revenue or GMV thresholds and open-payment-provider fee percentages.
Therefore, do not treat BigCommerce as unconditionally fee-free. Budget separately for the payment processor, the plan, any open-payment-provider fee and possible overage when revenue crosses a threshold. These conditions can still be attractive to a high-volume merchant, but they must be modeled against actual sales.
Who should choose it?
- Brands with hundreds or thousands of products
- B2B sellers needing company accounts, catalogs or negotiated pricing
- Businesses planning multiple storefronts or countries
- Merchants wanting fewer paid apps for core commerce functions
Who should avoid it?
A very small seller seeking the simplest launch may find the plans and settings excessive. It is also a poor fit if you require complete kernel-level control over checkout and order processing or dislike revenue-based plan rules.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. WooCommerce: best for ownership and flexibility
WooCommerce is a free, open-source commerce layer for WordPress. Its official pricing page states that the core has no platform subscription or revenue share, and supports unlimited products, orders and APIs. You choose hosting, payment gateways, themes and extensions.
Real operating cost
WooCommerce estimates hosting for most stores at $25–$350 per month. Extensions commonly cost $29–$299 per year each. Add a theme, managed hosting or a developer, backups, malware monitoring, caching, a content-delivery network, tax and shipping integrations, performance work and emergency support. Payment processors still charge their own fees.
This model can produce a lower software bill, but not necessarily a lower total cost. Every plugin update creates compatibility and testing work; a traffic spike may require infrastructure changes that a hosted service would handle for you.
Best fit and poor fit
Choose WooCommerce when you already use WordPress, need database and code control, want broad gateway choice or have dependable technical support. Avoid it if you do not want responsibility for hosting, PCI-related configuration, security patches, backups, plugin conflicts and recovery after an update.
3. Wix eCommerce: easiest visual setup for small stores
Wix combines drag-and-drop site design with integrated commerce. It suits a beginner whose business mixes products with services, bookings, content or lead generation. The Wix ecommerce page describes its website-builder approach.

Independent 2026 comparison coverage generally places Wix ahead for visual flexibility and small stores, but behind commerce-first platforms for complex inventory and advanced operations. See TechRadar’s website-builder comparison for that context.
Check the US pricing selector immediately before purchase because plans, currencies and promotions change. Wix is a weak choice for large catalogs, sophisticated faceted search, customer-specific B2B pricing, warehouse workflows or extensive commerce APIs.
4. Squarespace Commerce: best for design-led selling
Squarespace works well for artists, photographers, consultants, restaurants and lifestyle brands where visual presentation and content are central. Templates, blogging, memberships, appointments, digital content and simple physical-product catalogs live in one system.
Recommended Free Tools
Its pricing comparison checked August 18, 2026 showed a 2% online-store transaction fee on the lowest applicable commerce tier and 0% on higher commerce tiers. Digital-content and membership fees are listed separately and can be higher. The platform fee is not the same as card-processing charges.
Choose another system for large or intricate catalogs, advanced B2B, warehouse-heavy operations, extensive localization or a large commerce-specific app ecosystem.
5. Square Online: best for physical retail and local commerce
Square Online is most compelling when your business already uses Square for point of sale. Square says its Free plan has no monthly fees or startup costs and charges processing when a sale occurs. Products and sales can synchronize with Square Point of Sale through the Square Online service.
That connection can support shared catalog operations, pickup, delivery, shipping and in-person selling. Verify whether your country supports the required payments, hardware and tax features. Square is not simply a cheaper general-purpose Shopify clone: its advantage is operational continuity between local and online transactions.
It is less suitable for international-first brands, complex B2B pricing, enterprise merchandising or highly customized storefronts.

6. Ecwid: best for adding a store to an existing site
Ecwid embeds commerce into an existing WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or custom website. Its pricing page says Starter supports up to 10 products, while Venture supports up to 100 and adds social selling, mobile management, automated tax calculations, custom checkout and reports.
This is valuable when your current site already ranks, publishes content or represents a service business and rebuilding it would be wasteful. Ecwid is less appropriate when you need a deeply customized commerce-first storefront, complex merchandising or enterprise multi-storefront management. Displayed prices can vary by region and billing period, so capture the current US amount before subscribing.
7. Adobe Commerce: enterprise customization
Adobe Commerce targets organizations needing deep catalog, pricing, B2B, multi-site, personalization, order-management and integration capabilities. Adobe’s product overview is available at Adobe Commerce.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Budget for discovery, implementation, infrastructure, integration, quality assurance, security, upgrades, monitoring and a long-term engineering team or agency. It is appropriate when those costs are justified by complex workflows or revenue scale, not when a new seller simply wants more features.

Cost scenarios
New seller
Assume 20–50 products, low order volume, one market, no staff and limited technical ability. Compare Wix, Squarespace, Square and Ecwid first. WooCommerce makes sense when WordPress or technical support already exists. Your key metric is the combined monthly bill and time required to launch, not the software license alone.
Growing direct-to-consumer brand
Assume hundreds or thousands of products, paid advertising, multiple shipping rules, reviews, email integrations and several staff members. Model BigCommerce, WooCommerce and Shopify against app costs, payment fees, inventory, staff access and operational reliability. A lower subscription can be erased by extensions, hosting or developer hours.
Complex or enterprise merchant
Assume B2B and B2C catalogs, countries, currencies, ERP or CRM integrations, a product-information system and approval workflows. Compare BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, Shopware, a headless platform and an enterprise Shopify edition on implementation, governance, support and five-year ownership—not just the first invoice.

How to migrate from Shopify safely
Do not cancel the current store until the replacement has passed a complete test and you have a rollback plan.
- Inventory the data. Record products, variants, categories, customers, order history, reviews, discount codes, blog posts, images, SEO metadata, analytics, pixels, email automations, subscriptions, tax settings, shipping rules, payment accounts and custom integrations.
- Export and clean it. Preserve original handles, image relationships, variant options and customer-consent records. Identify fields the new platform cannot import automatically.
- Build a staging store. Configure theme, navigation, collections, taxes, shipping zones, staff permissions, notifications, payment gateways and local pickup before changing DNS.
- Test real scenarios. Place successful and failed orders, refunds, partial shipments, discount codes, subscription renewals, guest checkout, mobile checkout, tax calculations and inventory changes across locations.
- Plan redirects. Map every important old URL to a relevant new URL, preserve metadata and submit the new sitemap. Keep the old domain and redirect rules available during the transition.
- Reconnect measurement. Install analytics, advertising pixels, conversion events, consent controls and email triggers, then verify that one test order appears correctly in each system.
- Prepare launch and rollback. Lower DNS TTL in advance, schedule the cutover during a quiet period, keep payment and shipping credentials ready, and retain an export and documented recovery path.
- Monitor after launch. Watch payments, fulfillment, inventory, 404 errors, indexing, customer accounts and support tickets for at least the first several days.
Common traps
- “Free” software still costs money. Hosting, processing, security, extensions, support and tax or shipping services remain payable.
- No platform fee is not free checkout. Separate subscription, platform transaction, processor, app and fulfillment charges.
- Annual prices require commitment. Compare month-to-month and annual totals using the same currency and tax treatment.
- Country support changes the answer. Gateways, POS hardware, currencies, local methods and tax tools differ by market.
- Catalog limits appear late. Test variants, bundles, warehouses, languages, currencies and faceted search with realistic data.
- POS badges can mislead. Confirm shared inventory, returns, employee permissions, offline mode and location reporting—not merely card-reader compatibility.
- Open source transfers risk. Assign owners for updates, backups, security, compatibility testing, PCI scope and disaster recovery.
A practical decision rule
Start with the constraint that would be most expensive to change later. If it is managed hosting and complex commerce, shortlist BigCommerce. If it is ownership and WordPress control, shortlist WooCommerce. If it is visual simplicity, compare Wix and Squarespace. If it is a physical checkout operation, start with Square. If the existing website must remain intact, test Ecwid. If custom B2B workflows justify a large implementation, evaluate Adobe Commerce or a headless architecture.
For broader context on platform categories, see Shopify’s ecommerce platform comparison and TechnologyAdvice’s 2026 ecommerce-platform coverage, then verify every current price and regional feature on the vendor’s own page.
The Bottom Line
Choose the platform that matches your operating model: BigCommerce for a growing hosted operation, WooCommerce for control, Wix or Squarespace for smaller design-led stores, Square for physical retail, Ecwid for an existing website, and Adobe Commerce only when enterprise complexity justifies its cost.
